Googled: The End of the World as We Know It, by Ken Auletta

In Googled, esteemed media writer and critic Ken Auletta uses the story of Google’s rise to explore the inner workings of the company and the future of the media at large. Although Google has often been secretive, this book is based on the most extensive cooperation ever granted a journalist, including access to closed-door meetings and interviews with founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, CEO Eric Schmidt, and some 150 present and former employees. Inside the Google campus, Auletta finds a culture driven by brilliant engineers in which even the most basic ways of doing things are questioned. His reporting shines light on how Google has been so hugely successful―and why it could slip. On one hand, Auletta reveals how the company has innovated, from Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Earth to YouTube, search, and other seminal programs. On the other, he charts its conflicts: the tension between massive growth and its mandate of “Don’t be evil”; the limitations of a belief that mathematical algorithms always provide correct answers; and the collisions of Google engineers who want more data with citizens worried about privacy. More than a comprehensive study of media’s most powerful digital company, Googled is also a lesson in new media truths. Pairing Auletta’s unmatched analysis with vivid details and rich anecdotes, it shows how the Google wave grew, how it threatens to drown media institutions once considered impregnable―and where it is now taking us all.

From Publishers Weekly
Two Googles emerge in this savvy profile of the Internet search octopus. The first is the actual company, with its mixture of business acumen and nave idealism (Don't Be Evil is the corporate slogan); its brilliant engineering feats and grad-students-at-play company culture; its geek founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, two billionaires who imbibe their antiestablishment rectitude straight from Burning Man; its pseudo-altruistic quest to offer all the world's information for free while selling all the world's advertising at a hefty profit. The second Google is a monstrous metaphor for all the creative destruction that the Internet has wrought on the crumbling titans of old media, who find themselves desperately wondering how they will make money off of news, music, video and books now that people can Google up all these things without paying a dime. The first Google makes for a standard-issue tech-industry grunge-to-riches business story, its main entertainment value being Brin's and Page's comical lack of social graces. But New Yorker columnist Auletta (World War 3.0: Microsoft and Its Enemies) makes the second Google a starting point for a sharp and probing analysis of the apocalyptic upheavals in the media and entertainment industries. Google story (re)told well......not much intrepretive/predictive analysis
By Jijnasu Forever
For a book that bills itself as something that will "offer insights into what we know, and don't know, about what the future holds for the imperiled industry", it does an excellent job with the first part, hard to say what was unique about the take of the author that was significantly different from other books such as What Would Google Do?and The Google Story: Inside the Hottest Business, Media, and Technology Success of Our Timeand hardly does justice to the last portion (what future holds). The story of the beginnings and rise of Google, its famed work culture, unconventional approaches of its founder are all well told - in this book as well as previous ones. Auletta tries to cast the discussion from the viewpoint of the advertising industry - and while that in itself doesn't provide a significantly different perspective (Anyone who understands Google's revenue streams already knows it is in the advertising business....), it does provide for interesting reading. For an initiate in the Google story, this book will do full justice. If you are already familiar with the Google story and thought that the author will focus on the future of advertising media and related topics, you are likely to be disappointed. A recent book The Curse of the Mogul: What's Wrong with the World's Leading Media Companies actually does more justice in that regard.

Auletta does (re)raise significant issues - the discussion on Google Books and copyrights is a clear standout in the book. The "hubris" as portrayed by traditional media companies during Google's infancy is mind-boggling and amusing (of course, with the benefit of hindsight). Other than the framing of the discussion in the viewpoint of media/advertising, a Google-buff is not likely to realize significant benefit from this book. That focus also forces the author not to be able to discuss products such as Google Health - which has the potential for being a disruptive solution in itself. Overall, an excellent read for the Google-newbie, but an OK addition for a Google-phile.

Interesting in Parts, But Reads Too Much Like A Corporate Dossier
By Kerrie
Without a doubt, this book is thoroughly and expertly researched.

However, it took me numerous ambivalent weeks to read it (BTW, it is not at all unusual for me to read 3 books at once and be finished with them all in two days and I am most positively interested in technology). Unfortunately, this one didn't "grab" me like I thought it would, given its topic: the most brazen, upstart Corporation in the History of the Universe. The Anti-Microsoft. What I call "The God Box," otherwise known as Google.

Although I can say I learned a lot I didn't know before (like the incredible level to which we have all been contributing personal data streams to cable, satellite, internet, and phone companies for YEARS and the commercial value of this information and the fact that My Favorite NerdHero, Jeff Bezos, is one of the original angel investors in Google AND that Amazon's search technology is based on an offshoot of Google's), it felt like those nuggets of wisdom were buried in a lot of unnecessary background noise.

I think if you personally knew some of the people covered in this book, you would find it more engaging than I did. For me, the first 2/5ths of the book read like a corporate dossier, reciting the degrees and digital pedigrees of individual employees and associated boardmembers, etc.

What I really wanted to read about was what the title promised: how Google transformed the world and how it would build it anew. I also hoped it would delve into how Google might be addressing the problem of Search Engine Optimizers who are gaming Google's algorithm and degrading the quality of search results.

I HATE to criticize a talented writer who has obviously poured so much effort into a project, but this book just fell short on delivery of its promised "sizzle," for my tastes.

Why Google matters
By Malvin
"Googled" by Ken Auletta chronicles the rise of Google from its auspicious origins within the labs of Stanford University to its becoming perhaps the most influential technology company in Silicon Valley today. Mr. Auletta, who has covered the media and technology industries for many years, has drawn on his many dozens of personal interviews with key players to tell this remarkable story as only he can. Full of interesting anecdotes, insight and analysis, this highly readable book explains why Google matters a lot to consumers, businesses and policy makers.

Mr. Auletta excels at writing Google's corporate history, dedicating individual chapters to each year of its development from 1999 through 2008. Like many Internet success stories, we become acquainted with Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two (more or less) socially-awkward but undeniably brilliant persons who have remained true to their vision of making information accessible to end users via the Internet. Mr. Auletta explains that Google's focus on perfecting its proprietary search algorithms has proven to be widely disruptive to technology and media companies alike; while its control of information has garnered attention from governments and non-governmental organizations who are concerned about issues of corporate power and personal privacy.

Mr. Auletta discusses how Google's growth has posed challenges within to its management, corporate culture and strategy. While generally praising Page and Brin for their decisions, Mr. Auletta is concerned that Google's founders, who have yet to be confronted with the kind of adversity that afflicts most business owners, could be overlooking some of the external threats to the company's long-term viability; chief among these are what Mr. Auletta believes are legitimate public concerns about the use of private information for profit. Yet, it is clear from the author's thoughtful analysis that the technology and data Google collects has uniquely positioned the company to continue to take advantage of, if not define, the media/technology landscape for the foreseeable future.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Zombie: A Novel, by Joyce Carol Oates

Zombie is a classic novel of dark obsession from the extraordinary Joyce Carol Oates. A brilliant, unflinching journey into the mind of a serial killer, Zombie views the world through the eyes of Quentin P., newly paroled sex offender, as he chillingly evolves from rapist to mass murderer. Joyce Carol Oates—the prolific author of so many extraordinary bestsellers, including The Gravediggers Daughter, Blonde, and The Falls—demonstrates why she ranks among America’s most respected and accomplished literary artists with this provocative, breathtaking, and disturbing masterwork.

Damn you, Joyce!
By Jenn Emerson
I knew I was a fan of Joyce Carol Oates after being forced to read her by an English prof in college. She has a perspective and a skill with prose that really impressed my impressionable bachelor's degree mind. I'll grant, however, I am not a big reader and don't keep up with Oates' complete catalog. It was about a month ago when I ran across this title and thought, "Wow, Joyce Carol Oates is doing her take on the latest zombie phenomenon? I need to check this out." Dumb a**. Of course, she's not writing about zombie zombies. But that's kinda what I thought when I started reading it. I didn't know anything about it, much less that this book was originally published more than a decade ago.

I think coming into it virtually blind made the book a more intense experience for me vs. someone who has read the reviews, synopsis and so on. (Kinda like how I enjoyed "The Blair Witch Project" more than most because I went into it blind and believing.)

For that reason, I'm not sure how much I actually want to say about the story. When I got the book, I began reading it right away just because I was in a reading mood. Then I couldn't put it down. I wanted to, though. I felt like throwing up at least four or five times while reading it.

I wasn't finished with the story when I had to put the book down to go make a living. After I'd put it down I was reluctant to pick it up again. I'd pass by it on the bookshelf and give it the stink eye.

Then, finally, the other night all the circumstances collided making it the right time to finish this book.
It's a slim read, practically a novelette. But it's a testament to Oates' abilities. She knows just how to turn a phrase, flip syntax, reroute a time line - like a puppet master pulling at the threads of your emotion. It's so funny how unassuming she seems in person, her lady-next-doorness. She's pretty damn brilliant.

Despite that, I cannot recommend this book to anyone I know because it is just too damn creepy. It would be like recommending rape or something. That's it. My mind has been raped! Okay, well, it's not that bad. Well, sorta. I don't know. I mean, it's basically the journal of a sociopath who describes in calm self-righteous detail his gruesome and terrifying deeds.

It got me to thinking about how a lot of people are like this, maybe everyone. Not the horrifying sadosexual acts, but just that sociopathic drive to get what you want - trudging a path to a self-serving goal without a thought to those hurt along the way.

Yet Quentin is hurt by those he hurt. He finds ways to be offended and victimized by his own victims as he stalks and tortures them - completely insane.

In the end you realize, really, Quentin is the zombie - dead inside, a soulless automaton on a path of destruction. I so desperately wanted to reach through the pages and stop him. But I couldn't. I could only read on, paralyzed. The horror.

That night, after I'd put the book down, I got ready for bed, got under the covers and turned out the light. About 10 minutes later I got up, grabbed Zombie and put it outside on the patio, went back in and locked the door.

Because I'm such a contemplative reader, I usually keep all the books I read. I like to refer back to them, remember lines and phrases. However, "Zombie" is going with me on my next visit to the used book store - it will ride in the trunk of the car, of course. I don't need Quentin anywhere near me again. Though I am afraid he will forever reside in my paranoia.

Gruesome but compelling
By MFS
Zombie repulsed me. The narrator, Quentin P., is loathsome, sick. But in Oates' hands, the brutal serial killer becomes someone we almost know. Oates plunges us into Quentin's world and forces us to acknowledge that his madness is not without its own twisted logic. You see, all Quentin wants is someone in his life he can love and control completely. Zombie's horror is not so much in what Quentin does, but in how he recounts it: He describes his crimes the way my son might talk about his day at school. Zombie is short and taut, more like the novels Oates pens under her pseudonym, Rosamond Smith, than like her longer works. Gruesome, yes, but a compelling read.

Inside the mind of a serial killer
By Linda Linguvic
In this short and startling 1995 novel, Joyce Carol Oates again proves her expertise and versatility as a writer by getting inside the mind of a serial killer. The book is written as a diary, with bizarre capitalizations and crude drawings. She uses simple prose as the serial killer's dark obsession and demented scheming becomes clear and the reader is drawn into the workings of his mind. It is horrifying. The tension never lets up as one victim after another falls victim to his needs. The worst part is that we have all read the papers and know that there are really sickos like this out there in the world.

Bad translation
By BlueDog
I think that there is a good balance between text and images, and the images are of high quality. However, this book and other Taschen books that I have read suffer from poor translation. I work in translation and it appears to me that they did not use a native English speaker to translate from the German, as there are quite a few clunky sentences.

Adequate though flawed
By Zoller
I found this book to be a decent, though flawed, introduction to the topic of German Expressionism: The text is engaging, it covers a wide range of German Expressionist painters and groups, and there are many good color reproductions. This being said I have to agree with most of the other reviewers in saying that the editing and translation is rather poor for a book in wide circulation. The author/translator repeats several phrases and terms adnauseam (e.g. "chosen partner"), some of the sentences are awkward and badly constructed, and there are a few editing errors such as on page 127 when the text refers to Gauguin being born in 1853 when it should be Van Gogh. Despite these negative elements the book is still a worthwhile read as it does address such an interesting topic and does a fine job in covering such a large amount of territory

good art, bad editing
By EK
Great book, good illustrations. Some of the chapters are very badly edited, however. One repeats the phrase "his illness, from which he never recovered" four times in a short chapter. More typically, they end abruptly with no proper conclusion, as if chopped so as not to exceed space limitations. The writing/editing is the disappointing weak point here. Other times, terms are dropped or events referenced that have not yet been explained in the text. As an art book, the strength of the art can carry it. But it's a shame that it had to be this way.

Parents will see themselves in the very funny sections on taking your toddler to restaurants ("One parent will spend their time walking your toddler around the restaurant and outside like a cocker spaniel, while the other, luckier parent will eat alone."), Things You Thought You'd Never Say That You Now Say As a Parent of a Toddler ("I can tell you're pooping because your eyes are watering."), and how to order pizza ("Spend $40 on pizza delivery. Listen to your toddler cry for 30 minutes about how the pizza is all wrong. Watch your toddler take a small bite of crust. Google 'can anger give you a heart attack?' Start the bedtime routine.").

If you catch a squirrel, we will go get ice cream! (Said so I could read this book in my yard)
By Mia Walters
Stay at home mom here. The only reason I didn't write a review sooner was because I had this book in my face. (I was able to read it by sitting outside and telling my son we would get ice cream if he could catch a squirrel.) Speaking of face, toddlerhood slapped us in the face way before I expected it. 15 months. I started off as one of THOSE moms. Crunchy granola no tv or electronics organic gluten free "not my sweet angel" moms. Now my toddler is a little S$#% half the time (remember, we aren't full blown toddler yet.) We have literally worn out one DVD of Frozen and my husband was told not to bother coming home from work without a new one. As I write this, I stink. Like really stink. I can't recall my last shower. My kid sits on my lap while I poop and my house is covered with a white film, being a combo of yogurt and lotion, which are interchangeable to him. My meals consists of whatever he didn't eat, which is often enough that I know I will at least get one hot rejected meal a day. And I secretly despise my mother just a little bit for being smug that my son is always the perfect angel at her house. (Not that he's not a sweetheart at mine, but it's a delicate walk that can change in a split second). This book is funny as hell. If you have a toddler, this book is hilarious. I came close to peeing my pants. (If you are a new mom, you probably will pee your pants. Totally normal.) Because it's so true. Every sentence. If you are or have a first time pregnant friend, this should be purchased for a glimpse into the future and a fantastic non stop laugh.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was a book about my life.
By Amanda G
This book was hilarious! I found myself agreeing with almost the entire thing. As a matter of fact, often times, when I would finally sit down to read after a tiresome day with my little A hole (whom I love, don't get me wrong), I would end up reading a section of the book that happened to coincide with what my toddler had done that day. I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry. I think I may have laugh-cried. You know, that thing you do when you laugh and cry at the same time and your husband looks at you like he's concerned for your mental health and the only solution is to stand in the corner of the room and throw chocolate at you. Kind of like feeding a bear. It could go either way.

Sure, there's a few typos, but you're not going to care because you'll be too busy laugh-crying. Or maybe we can call it the giggle sads? I don't know. At any rate, the part about how you're going to smell when dealing with a toddler had all my friends roaring with laughter. Most of them laughed because it was just funny to them that someone described it that way, while us parents of toddlers cried because it was on point. My mother-in-law was offended by the title alone, which made me want to leave it out and quote it every single time she stepped foot in my house so if anything else, this book is a great mother-in-law replant and that's the most important part!

Review
"With a map, directions, and the family in the driver's seat, Get Your Loved One Sober is an important book for any family affected by alcohol abuse."
--Claudia Black, PhD, author of It Will Never Happen to Me

"For decades it was believed that there was nothing one could do to help substance-abusing loved ones until they hit bottom or that heavy-handed confrontational tactics were necessary. Bob Meyers has developed a remarkably effective and gentle method for working through family members and concerned significant others to help their 'unmotivated' loved ones get into treatment. It is no longer necessary to feel helpless and hopeless. This book offers clear and practical advice based on solid scientific research."
--William R. Miller, PhD, distinguished professor of psychology and psychiatry and author of Motivational Interviewing

"Get Your Loved One Sober is an outstanding resource for persons dealing with loved ones who refuse to get help for their substance abuse problem. Years of research show that the approach described in this book works. I highly recommend it."
--Timothy O'Farrell, PhD, chief of the Families and Addiction Program, Harvard Medical School, Department of Psychiatry

'If you feel like your life is out of control because of someone else's substance abuse, this book will put you in the driver's seat with research-based strategies that can make life infinitely better--for you and your loved one. Get Your Loved One Sober fills a void for everyday people as well as professionals who feel helpless and hopeless concerning substance abusers in their lives. Clearly written and engaging, this book can move you from feeling like a passive victim to becoming an empowered, active player in helping a loved one overcome a drinking problem."
--Anne M. Fletcher, MS, RD, LD, author of Sober for Good: New Solutions for Drinking Problems--Advice from Those Who Have Succeeded and recipient of the Research Society on Alcoholism Journalism Award

"Lucid and clear, this book will help those who love an addicted person find the practical steps they need to take to facilitate change. I recommend it highly."

Can This Book Help You?

If you live with or love someone who drinks or drugs too much, this book can help you. This book offers you a program that has been proven to help people whose lives are affected by a problem drinker, a drug user, or someone who does both. If you feel stuck in a hopeless, substance-ruled life, this book can help you. If you have ever called, or wanted to call, a crisis line, clinic, or hospital and said, "Help, my husband is drinking himself to death" or "Help, my kid stays out all night getting high, and I'm scared to death," this book can help. You will also find help here if alcohol or drugs are destroying your marriage or scaring your children. Whether you are the wife, husband, lover, parent, son, daughter, or friend of an alcoholic or drug user, this book offers you the tools both to help you help your loved one find the path to sobriety and to improve your own life.

Throughout the book you will notice that we primarily illustrate our points with alcohol abusers. The program, however, has been proven to be effective with loved ones who abuse a wide variety of substances ranging from alcohol and marijuana to heroin and crack. Thus, you can effectively apply the program to your loved one regardless of the substance of abuse.

If you have "tried everything" and nothing has worked, but you are not ready to give up, then you are in the right place. The scientifically validated program on which this book is based has been designed specifically for people who feel they have "tried it all." They have scolded, nagged, begged, bribed, detached, and tried a few tricks not fit to print. Just like you, they love their drinkers enough to keep trying and trying. What they have not done (and what we will teach you to do) is use that love to change the way they and their drinkers interact so that they spend less time feeling miserable and their loved ones discover the pleasure in being sober. From where we sit, that's an awfully good deal. We are confident that you will also find it to be so.
Of course, we cannot guarantee that every single problem will be solved. What we can promise is that we will teach you skills to regain control of your life and to offer your drinker the best help available. In some cases, applying these skills does not result in complete abstinence and happily-ever-after—but in most cases, it does result in a better life for you and in sobriety for your drinker. The happily-ever-after is up to you and your loved one to create.

To keep their discussion uncluttered, the authors primarily refer to drinkers for the rest of the book, rather than to drinkers and drug users. The material is equally applicable to both groups, although extra caution should be taken in cases where the user's lifestyle is centered around violence and criminal activity.

from Chapter 1
The Program

The subtitle for this book, Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading, and Threatening, was chosen deliberately to emphasize that our program offers a positive alternative to the usual tactics people use to try to get their loved ones sober. If your loved one is still abusing alcohol or other drugs, in spite of your repeated efforts to get her to quit, then it is time to try something different. It is time to try the Alternatives.

Learning the alternatives to nagging, pleading, and threatening is fairly straightforward. It will not take years of study for you to master these tools. You simply need to work your way through this program and give some serious thought to what you want and to the choices you make. Whether you do that quickly and decisively or slowly and deliberately is entirely up to you. Although the concepts are not complex, your life is, and change will happen at variable speeds despite your consistent efforts. Just keep in mind that if you do not try at all, it is likely nothing will change (at least not for the better). On the other hand, if you use the Alternatives, there is the very strong likelihood that your life will improve. Hence, dig in!

The alternative to nagging, pleading, and threatening can be found in a simple system of behavior that has two goals and one central procedure. The goals are (1) to improve the quality of your life and (2) to make sobriety more attractive to your loved one than drinking. The central procedure is something we call "behavioral mapping." It is a way of figuring out how you and your drinker affect each other and how that pattern may be modified to achieve different results. For example, Ruth found it very upsetting that Paul would open a beer as soon as he came home from work every day. In fact, she found it so upsetting that each day she would bitterly complain about it, and they would fight. After mapping out their typical after-work scenario, Ruth realized that her complaints actually made it more likely that Paul would drink. He used the arguments as an excuse to justify his "needing" a relaxing drink. Her nagging also gave him a reason to "punish" her by drinking. Using the same Alternatives you will learn, Ruth was able to change her reaction to Paul's after-work beer. Further, by doing so, she eventually made it more enjoyable for him to skip the beer than to drink it. End of beer. End of complaints. End of arguments and punishment. Beginning of a better quality of life for Ruth and a shift toward sobriety for Paul.

Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well it is both simple and difficult. The techniques are not difficult to learn. What can be difficult, however, is applying them in your current life. The way you and your loved one interact is a well-rehearsed routine born of your natural style, his natural style, the impact of alcohol on your loved one's brain and behavior, and the interaction of all of the above. If you think of the changes you want to achieve as a journey, you can draw a parallel between the simple lines on a road map and the techniques you will learn, and then draw a parallel between the actual roads you travel and the life context in which you implement them. Real roads, unlike their clean counterparts on a map, have potholes, detours, and traffic jams. Your life has hard-to-break habits, unforeseen crises, and just plain discouragement that you will need to overcome. However, just as you wouldn't give up a desirable journey simply because some of the roads are bumpy, you won't give up on changing life with your drinker just because it is not always easy. Change is almost never easy; but change for the better is always worth the effort. After months and years of nagging, pleading, and threatening your loved one, you are ready for a change.

A Look Ahead

As we have already said, there are two simple objectives to this program. One is to improve the quality of your life. That means not only getting your loved one to stop abusing alcohol, but more importantly, putting the sanity back into your own life regardless of whether she ever gives up drinking. That's right. It is time for your quality of life to become less dependent on whether your loved one is drunk or sober, in a good mood or bad, home or out. To this end, we will help you create a safety plan to ensure that regardless of your drinker's mood, you and those dependent on you do not become victims of violence. (We cover this in chapter 3.) On a happier note, chapter 4 offers you a glimpse of the future you will create. In other words, as you work your way through that chapter, you will figure out what you want your life to look like and begin to translate those dreams into attainable goals. Chapter 5 addresses the guilt that gets in the way of moving forward and helps you feel good about finally being in the driver's seat. Part of moving forward, of course, means rebuilding your emotional and social life. Chapter 6 shows you how.

The objective of moving your loved one toward sobriety, believe it or not, is also helped by improving the quality of your life independent of his behavior. As your stress level decreases, you will be able to deal with your drinker in a calmer, less reactive manner, and your relationship will improve. This in turn will help you motivate your drinker toward sobriety. Unfortunately, your improved attitude, while necessary, is not sufficient to accomplish this second goal. Thus, we also give you a tool kit of techniques that are effective alternatives to nagging, pleading, and threatening. To begin with, the behavioral map we mentioned earlier forms the foundation of almost every strategy. Thus, an entire chapter is devoted to teaching you how to use this important technique. Chapter 2 will explain the behavioral map, provide lots of examples, show you how to use it in your own situations, and help you practice until you can map your interactions and be confident that you really are getting at what triggers your difficulties. Combining this awareness with the other techniques you learn will empower you in a way that nagging, pleading, and threatening never could. Moving on to these other techniques, you will find chapters devoted to disabling your enabling behaviors (chapter 7) as well as useful problem-solving and communication techniques (chapters 8 and 9). "Behavior Basics" (chapter 10) will equip you with the core tools of behavior change so that you can more easily modify your behavior and that of your drinker. (Lest you shudder at the thought of "modifying" anyone, stay calm. The section on page 7 calle...

Nagging, Pleading and Threatening is usually counterproductive!
By Barbara S. Reeves
The problem that most people experience when trying to get their loved one sober is that they keep trying the same tactics over and over again without success. All their nagging, pleading, bargaining, and threatening is usually counterproductive. They must find a new approach.
In their book, "Get Your Loved One Sober: Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading, and Threatening", authors Robert J. Meyers and Brenda L. Wolf have developed a program called CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) that uses "supportive and non-confrontational methods to engage the substance abuser in treatment." CRAFT is a program for the significant other, usually a spouse living with the substance abuser.

CRAFT teaches them to improve their own lives regardless of whether the addict enters treatment or not. Meyers and Wolf claim to have a higher success rate than Al-Anon and the Johnson Institute's traditional method of intervention.

Some of their useful advice includes:

~ Identify triggers, signs of drinking, and consequences of use.
~ Develop a roadmap for dealing with triggers, signs, and consequences.
~ Do not take responsibility for the drinker's behavior.
~ Change your reaction to their drinking behavior with a number of tools.
~ Stop fixing their messes and allow them to experience the consequences.
~ Attempt to offer a more rewarding activity than drinking (good luck with this one).
~ Speak to them using "I" statements instead of "You" statements.
~ Have treatment already lined up for when they are ready.
~ Know that lapses and mistakes are a natural part of life and are to be expected in a process of change.

They also make one important point: "If there is one overriding 'fact' in the world of behavior change, it is that people who record important information about their lives are the people most likely to succeed in making important changes in their lives." So Meyers and Wolf encourage you top keep a journal of these activities and the results. And remember that the winners in life see problems as opportunities.

Unhelpful with Meth Addiction
By haphazardgypsy
I'm sure this could be helpful to someone living with an alcoholic, but the ideas do not transfer well to harder drugs, or to dealing with someone you are not living with. I got this book to help me interact with my brother, a meth addict, living out of state. The state of mind of a meth addict is so different than that of a drunk, and meth destroys the body/mind much quicker. Hard drugs require quicker action and something more confrontational, such as intervention (at least in the case of my family). I'm sure the CRAFT method is effective in some cases, but does not apply to the broader range of addicts.

A life changing approach
By Sarah
Get Your Loved One Sober outlines a scientifically proven technique (CRAFT) based on the philosophy that if I am someone with a close relationship with my Loved One, my day-to-day interactions with my Loved One can begin to subtly influence the choices they make about drinking, using drugs, or whatever addictive behavior they are engaged in. This book is not the elusive, magical "silver bullet", because complex problems rarely get resolved through a one-time simple action. This is, however, a great place to start - especially if you're feeling exhausted, frustrated, and that you've tried everything else and nothing has worked yet. Does this require some extra effort on the part of the family and/or friend? Most definitely. But I feel that my loved one's health, life and future are worth a little extra, momentary, effort on my part for a bigger payoff later.

What I like most about this book is that it turns the focus from the addictive behavior of your loved one back onto YOURSELF. Many people who have a loved one with an addictive issue have really turned their lives upside down, focusing all their energy and efforts on the addiction. Get Your Loved One Sober helps remind everyone that they deserve to be the focus of their own lives, they deserve to be happy and healthy, and most of all they deserve to be safe. With great tips on everything from WHEN to speak to a loved one about an addictive behavior to HOW to make sure you're prepared to get out if things turn violent, Get Your Loved One Sober prepares family and friends to make the most helpful decisions for them when situations become difficult to navigate.

I first heard about this book when searching online for 12-step alternatives. I found SMART Recovery Online, and they have a fantastic section of resources for Family and Friends of those with addictive behaviors. They have weekly online voice meetings firmly based in the techniques outlined in Dr. Meyers' book. Between SMART Recovery Online and this wonderful book, I am feeling healthier and happier than I can remember in a long time. My loved one is making great process in recovery, and we have a wonderful future to look forward to.

While this book is not a "quick-fix" (since there are no quick-fixes in the field of recovery) it quickly got me on my way to doing positive, helpful things that made me feel happier, healthier and more hopeful right away. Really, the book is not about our loved ones, rather it's really about how to get ourselves to a better place - and thereby be a bigger help to our loved ones. It has been truly life changing for me and my loved one. Thank you Dr. Meyers!

Great book for college!
By Donald Hsu
I have used this book for a course at the undergraduate level, titled "Global Electronic Commerce (GEC)".

This book has in-depth coverage of the technical terms, infrastructure, and case studies. I like the way authored presented E-commerce as business, technology and society.

The "Insight on Society" is a quick read to understand companies and issues such as Foursquare, Smartphone Security, Who is on your website? The payment methods were covered in details. If you teach MBA class, this book is excellent.

Most Americans use Google FaceBook and YouTube (GFY), but never paid anything. GFY is not E-Commerce. It is a hard concept to teach the young people today. Amazon, Priceline, Expedia, JetBlue are the E-Commerce success stories.

The only drawback of this book, is the lack of coverage of successful GEC firms. What I did is to ask students to do research on European discount airlines: Ryanair, EasyJet, AirBerlin, etc. They are doing this as their final project in teams. Students love this book and enjoy the course.

The next step is to start a website, and sell to the 6.2 billion potential customers in the world!!!

Comprehensive and very current
By Ralph
If you want to learn about e-commerce, this is a great book. It is not a how-to book, but gives you a comprehensive overview about the basic fundamentals of e-commerce. It is up to date, with alot of current data and information. Most of the chapters have a table at the beginning about what's new or important trends for 2011-2012, which is helpful. For a textbook, it is very readable -- there are case studies at the beginning and end of each chapter, and also shorter ones within the chapters that are like magazine articles and very interesting to read.

Fresh content, practical application
By D. Crane
I am in a new role where I am working on eCommerce learning plans for a large packaged goods manufacturer. I'm not a student and I don't have the luxury of spending 3 months to get up to speed on the topic so this book was perfect. The content is probably topical for at least another 12-18 months. If you need guidance in this space fast I felt this book was worth the investment.

Can you really move forward without putting the past to rest?

Grace Willingdon has everything she needs. For fifteen years she’s lived in a trailer overlooking Bras d’Or Lakes in postcard-perfect Baddeck, Cape Breton, with Fletcher Parsons, a giant teddy bear who’s not even her husband. But Grace’s blissful life is rudely interrupted when her estranged son calls from New York City, worried about his teenaged daughter.

Before she knows it, Grace finds herself the temporary guardian of her self-absorbed, city-slicker granddaughter, Melissa. Trapped between a past she’s been struggling to resolve and a present that keeps her on her toes, Grace decides to finally tell her story. Either the truth will absolve her, or cost her everything.

Crackling with Lesley Crewe’s celebrated wit and humour, Amazing Grace is a heartfelt tale of enduring love and forgiveness, and the deep roots of family.

Amazing Grace - Amazing Story
By Genevieve Graham
A lot of times I read reviews where people say things like, "I laughed, I cried, etc" and I've written those, too. But this time ... wow. I really mean it. I absolutely love Ms Crewe's writing. Amazing Grace was open and honest, plunging unexpectedly into very dark and painful situations, then returning time and time again to dance with hope. The dialogue was perfect - easy, relatable, and very, very real. Ms Crewe has created a masterpiece with Amazing Grace. I didn't want it to end. Of course every story has to end at some point, but she kept it going, extending the reader's experience just enough. Even after I closed the cover, I knew I would never forget Grace. Wish I could head up to Sydney and say hi sometime.

Amazing woman!
By SouthernGirl
Definitely deserves five stars! Don't skip this story. I hated for it to end. The main character is so strong and real she engages you immediately. Through tragedy Grace shines with her strong will and heart. Sometimes though the things we experience are terrible they can open our eyes to see behind another's pain. Because of her pain Grace is able to reclaim her family and be fulfilled.
