About the Author

Gordon L. Rottman joined the Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the Fifth Special Forces Group in Vietnam. He was a Special Operations Forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center for twelve years and is now a freelance writer in Texas.

Adam Hook studied graphic design and began his work as an illustrator in 1983. He specializes in detailed historical reconstructions, and has previously illustrated Osprey titles.

Everything the soldier in Vietnam carried or wore.

In this Osprey title, Elite #216, "Vietnam War US & Allied Combat Equipments", author Gordon Rottman gives the reader an exposition on the equipment of combat soldiers during the Vietnam War.

In this small book, the author basically gives you everything a soldier might wear, carry, eat, what he carried his equipment in and on. Every bit of web gear, belts, suspenders, canteens, magazine pouches, weapons, field rations are included in this book.

The author not only gives the reader this, but also tells the story of how this equipment changed over time to better meet the challenges of the Vietnamese environment. There's also locally-made equipment adopted by some units at some times. Author Rottman even includes equipment of ANZAC troops as well as Vietnamese soldiers. The author, an SF veteran of the conflict even gives the reader an idea of what soldiers really carried under the realistic circumstances, regardless of regulations.

This small volume is fairly good for what it does and offers a good idea of everything a soldier in the Vietnam conflict had on his body and in his hands as well as how it worked...or, sometimes didn't. I would have preferred some first-hand accounts, but the author's own experience is certainly considerable. Four stars.

An army that expected to fight the Soviets in Central Europe for the fate of the world ended up fighting the Viet Cong and North Vietnam half way around the world, in the very much different environment of Southeast Asia. Jungles, rice paddies, and the Central Highlands called for different combat equipment. Author Gordon Rottman surveys what was worn by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, and their allies.

"Vietnam War US & Allied Combat Equipments" is an Osprey Elite Series book. The author served in the conflict. Adam Hook provides some excellent supporting illustrations. For a military still wearing surplus equipment from World War II and the Korean War, Vietnam required some adaptions in load carrying equipment and survival loads. The author walks the reader up through several generations of modifications to web gear, packs, and other equipment items. The text is in sufficient detail to guide a collector, while the narrative is interesting enough to be a trip down memory lane for veterans who lived the times and used the equipment. Highly recommended as a concise but knowledgeable introduction to the topic.

As its name suggests, this book is a great resource for entrepreneurs. Whether you are just launching your business or have been operational for quite some time, you’ll find tactics and ideas in this book to help you move toward the next level. This book really brought home to me that if I want my company to succeed, I can’t be the only entrepreneur on the premises—I need my people to have a stake in the business’s future and think like owners as well. The authors are really honest about what did—and didn’t—work as they were growing Barefoot Wines, and here they’ve presented guidelines and strategies that will work in any industry.

Absolutely Fantastic

John Le Carre has the gift of storytelling. To me, he is the best espionage writer alive today. Most of the espionage writers put all the emphasis on the events whereas the main theme of Le Carre's books has always been characters. Le Carre does not write breakneck thrillers. He writes characters, lively and human. And that's why when you read a Le Carre book, a year down the road, you can't recall the story but you can easily recall the characters of the story. He is the creator of many memorable characters and Barley Blair is one of them.
Barley is not a hero, not even a patriot. He is a careless publisher, a jazz player and a chess fan. He is not a spy. He is pushed into the espionage game because of his drunken exchange of thoughts with a Russian scientist, another of Le Carre's memorable characters. Barley has reluctantly agreed to play the part of a courier and agent-runner by British spymasters and on his arrival in Moscow, he falls in love with a girl, who very much like Barley himself, is pushed into the spy game.
Barley soon reaches a point where he has to decide whom to betray. The girl he loves or his country. To me, that is the climax of the novel, the classical dilemma.
And dilemma it is. Here is Barley Blair, the main character, forming one part of the triangle, who is not a spy, doesn't even want to be one. The second part of triangle is Goethe, the Russian scientist, who wants to tell something to the world but not through the spies. And the third part is Katya, loved by both Goethe and Barley, who doesn't even know what is she doing and where does she fit in the whole scheme of things. And in the background are the spymasters of UK and USA who think they have all the strings in their hands but have totally ignored the fact that human nature is an essential part of all the espionage equations.
You've got to read the novel to know the whole thing. And if you are into serious fiction, you must read "The Russia House".

Humanistic thought-provoking tale of the unlikely spy

Firstly, one does not pick up a John Le Carre book to be dazzled with the flash-bang imagery of modern spy thrillers. John Le Carre writes 'spy literature', a look at the inner workings and emotions felt by his well fleshed-out characters in the espionage trade. Like meeting a life-long friend for the first time, you come to know his characters, and if patient enough, actually care about them. His prose often borders on poetry.
I offer this warning of style for the sake of saving time for those looking for a quick pulse-quickening read. On to my opinion of "The Russia House". Barley Blair, the inner hypocrite comes clean. The book is an in depth tale of how a lackluster publisher with a penchant for self-destruction and jazz finds himself deeply embroiled in the hopeful defection of a Russian scientist, Goethe. Blair bumps into Goethe at a chance gathering during the hopeful glimmer of glasnost. Goethe overhears Blair's recited philosophical rhetoric for a hopeful future between the West and Communist Russia. The conspiracy begins.
Le Carre steers us through how a communique meant for Blair is intercepted, where essentially we begin our journey. We are led through London, Moscow, an island off the coast of New England, and Leningrad in the attempt to confirm Blair in his new job of spy and get the elusive scientist to switch sides. However, Blair wasn't expecting to fall in love with Goethe's emmisary, and a whole new tasteful spin is added to the spy novel. Le Carre's characters here are equally intimate and distant, illuminating yet shrouded in secrecy...so very human. So, not to spoil the intricacies for the eager reader, I shall conclude explaining the plot here.
Through all of this, Le Carre gives us a glimpse of life for both the Westerners and Easterners in Communist Russia. The lingering shadows of Stalin and Breshnev are never dismissed lightly, but rather the hope that was glasnost shines on through the murky depths of intrigue.
Fans of the George Smiley books may find themselves disappointed with reading "The Russia House", but I think fans of Le Carre as the storyteller and writer will be very satisifed.

Bang on target

Although some elements of this book may not seem overly realistic to the more discerning specialists of espionage, the general story line is believable. Being a native of Moscow, I enjoyed the masterful, if oversimplified, descriptions of things Russian. Le Carre diction is particularly pleasing -- his mastery of the English language is superb. The text flows easily; it is hard to put the book down. I highly recommend the book to anybody who wants to get a sence of intelligence operations, the difference between US and British apporach to espionage and what Russia was like in the 1990s. Additionally, readers will enjoy Le Carre's masterful command of English -- "an example to us all," as one of his heroes points out. I love this book!

A Picture is Worth A Thousand words.

I tend to write long reviews. Some people love 'em, some people hate them, and that's OK. If I stand in judgement of someone else's writing, it's only fair that others stand in judgement of mine. What surprises me is that people criticize the wrong reviews. I'll carry on about something being really bad or really good and nobody days a thing. If say a book is really great or really bad, except for one think, people will argue about that one thing, as if there ought not be any "almost" judgements.

So I won't give this book an "almost" review. See that picture of the book's cover? It's a cute little tease, enough to bring a smile to your face, but nothing to write home about? That's a cover you can judge this book by. You won't find English Literature classes bring assigned to study the book a century from now. On the other hand, it's a fun read. Solid good writing. Perhaps this author is capable of writing the Great American Novel. I don't know. But definitely someone I wouldn't mind sharing morning coffee with for twenty years It;s a good storyteller, and that, folks, is the greatest compliment you can give a fiction writer.

Frenemies

Picked up when free on Kindle. (Bimbo transformation, magical erotica)
Two spiteful friends find a room with a magical tome - I think my favorite part of the manuscript is the shenanigans of them getting into and out of this restricted-narrow entrance room.

I don't do "mean" and did not enjoy the hateful interaction between the "friends." This is one story where I didn't wince as the characters loose their brains; it is also one of the few bimbo transformations where the change isn't inflicted on the woman by misogynistic, intelligent-fearful males, which was a plus.

The story quality and editing was as expected for a free bimbo erotica.

dark, haunting, intensely passionate, and terrifyingly unpredictable

When we closed the book on Ellie Watt, Camden McQueen and Javier Bernal so long ago, we left old wounds to fester, old secrets to slither, old lies to lay in wait. This duet is the release of that darkness, the boiling over of old deceit and heartbreak bringing forth a new kind of devastation. Dirty Souls is a lifetime of cons and crimes and lies coming back to haunt two couples by way of their children. And in the same vein of everything that came before it, this story is dark, haunting, intensely passionate, and terrifyingly unpredictable.

The level of brutality and violence, indifference and cruelty in these pages pushed me to the brink. I think it may have been the hardest book to stomach that I've ever read from Karina Halle. I was on the verge of tears at times, my stomach revolting at the violence and terror on each page. I'd find myself smiling from ear to ear at the perfectly timed humor, and then immediately trying to lift my chin off the floor at the most unexpected "holy shit!" moments.

Throughout the Sins and Needles trilogy, the Dirty Angels series, and through the Sins duet, Karina Halle has brilliantly and masterfully endeared her readers to the villains. We've found ourselves rooting for the murderers, falling in love with the liars, the sinners, wistfully longing for them to fall in love, to survive, to beat the odds while blood is shed, while lives are lost, while family ties are severed all around them. But what do you do, how are you supposed to feel, when all those characters you've come to love go to war with each other? Dirty Souls is that war. It's actually painful to endure this book, it hurts to have the veil cast aside. I loved these characters from the start. All of them. I wasn't under any illusions of just how truly bad they were all along, but I tried to find the good, the vulnerability, the redeeming qualities underneath the treachery. But Dirty Souls exposes these characters in a way that won't allow you to lie to yourself anymore. This is a book that brings everything full circle. It's profoundly sad in many ways, it's utterly terrifying, and everything about it is so brutally wrong and so satisfyingly right.

Black Hearts swept me away, held me captive, a story so ruthless in its savagery, so intense in its romance. Karina Halle takes us back to the cartel, to the sultry danger of Mexico, to the feeling you got when you knew a girl from America likely wouldn't survive the clutches of a Bernal world with both her life and her heart intact. This story is chilling at times, nail biting often, and it's peppered with some of the most blissfully romantic moments I've ever read. And like every book that lead us to this moment, this love story, I loved every single bit of it.

Can't go wrong with Karina Halle's Dark Romances!! LOVED IT!

Dirty Souls is the conclusion to Vicente and Violet's forbidden love story. I was really looking forward to this book because things were about to go down. I didn't know what to expect and was pretty much ready for anything to happen. In dark romances you have to be open-minded and understand why some characters are the way they are and do the things they do. As a huge fan of anti-heroes and villains this book was perfect for me. We see both Violet and Vicente growing as individuals, and we also see the darkness seep into their souls. To survive in the world they live in, they have to transform and have a thicker skin. The author did a really good job in doing that, I especially loved the growth Violet went through. In the first book, she came a bit across as immature and sometimes childish, but she really went through a transformation in this book. She was really strong and stood up for herself, and I was really proud of her. The same goes for Vicente, he did things he never thought he would do. But that is the power of LOVE.

"I've never been so proud of anyone before. You are so incredibly brave, so strong, it does something to my heart. It gives it an extra reason to beat."

I really loved all the chapters told from Ellie and Javier POVs. I love those two characters so much and I just needed what happened to happen for closure. Things didn't go as I thought it would, but I was really satisfied with the ending. I do wish there was more growth for Vicente and Violet as a couple. That is something I missed in this book, in my opinion this book was too short for me to fully connect to them as a couple (I was connected 80%). I just needed an extra chapter or three to focus on them as a couple. Besides that I really enjoyed this Duet a lot. It was amazing to reconnect with all the previous characters, especially Javier and Luisa because they are one of my all time favorite dark romance couples. Also the information about possible upcoming books in this world at the end gives me LIFE. I so need for all of them to get their own book.

Cray cray and I love it!

***First off, Dirty Souls is a continuation to Black Hearts so you must read that book first!!!! Otherwise you can read this duet on its own without reading anything before it!!***

I’m not usually a fan of dark romance, but Karina Halle has me hooked!

Dirty Souls picks up right where Black Hearts left off (so if you haven’t read Black Hearts yet stop reading this review now and go and read it). Violet and Vicente met and fell for each other in the first book, and in the second hidden truths about them, and the sins of their parents come to light in Dirty Souls.

Now Vicente and Violet are caught up in a whirlwind of dangerous and insane events, and neither one of them knows if they will make it out alive.

“Your parents kept all of this a secret because they were trying to protect you.”

There’s a reason Karina Halle is one of my favorite authors, you know the special ones where you’ll read anything they write no matter what genre? It’s because she always delivers a book I can sink my teeth into, one where I fall into the story seamlessly and never have trouble getting into. I mentioned above I don’t usually like dark romance, but Halle writes it so it’s f***ed up crazy and yet I don’t feel sick to my stomach or repulsed by what I am reading. I want more. Her dark romances seem to lack rules and makes her free with the plot.

Violet is such an interesting character, because she’s hard and soft at the same time. She feels things deeply, more deeply than others, and yet she can still pull herself together and do what needs to be done.

Vicente is more arrogant and intrepid than I usually like in my heroes, but strangely it just works in this book. His confidence is the perfect counterpoint for Violet and it gives her strength when she feels weak.

Even though I never finished or read some of the books attached to this (again these can be read as a standalone, I did it myself), I felt as if this book really came full circle. With the parts about the parents you can tell that what passed meant closure in their lives. And while this book completes the duet, there’s a part of me that wants to read more of this world, more about this couple and their love.

At its heart, Dirty Souls is a story of family and the journey one takes to find out who they are, who they will become.
