About the Author

Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey co-authored the New York Times best-selling business book The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle, and Heart Built America s #1 Wine Brand. The book, selected as recommended reading in the CEO Library for CEO Forum, chronicles Barefoot s journey from its start in the laundry room of a rented Sonoma County farmhouse in 1986 to the board room of E&J Gallo, where the brand was successfully sold in 2005. Barefoot is now the largest bottled wine brand in the world.

From the start, with virtually no money and no wine industry experience, they employed innovative ideas to overcome obstacles and create new markets and strategic alliances, while also pioneering Worthy Cause Marketing and performance-based compensation.

Since selling the brand to E&J Gallo, they consult with Fortune 500s and other companies, helping them establish and strengthen entrepreneurial company cultures through seminars, webinars, and onsite training, and travel the world speaking to corporations, conferences, symposiums, and universities. They are regular media guests and contributors to international publications and professional journals, along with being FOX News Radio Network s Workplace Culture Experts.

Houlihan and Harvey's story is widely used as a case study in schools of entrepreneurship. They were the keynote speakers at the 2014 World Conference on Entrepreneurship in Dublin, Ireland and recipients of the 2014 Distinguished Entrepreneurship Speaker Award from The Turner School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Bradley University. This book, The Entrepreneurial Culture: 23 Ways to Engage and Empower Your People, is a companion to The Barefoot Spirit written specifically for the C-Suite. Both books will be featured in the premiere episode and network launch of Jeff Hayzlett's C-Suite TV and C-Suite Book Club in September 2014.

Excellent resource!
By C. S. ELLIOTT
As its name suggests, this book is a great resource for entrepreneurs. Whether you are just launching your business or have been operational for quite some time, you’ll find tactics and ideas in this book to help you move toward the next level. This book really brought home to me that if I want my company to succeed, I can’t be the only entrepreneur on the premises—I need my people to have a stake in the business’s future and think like owners as well. The authors are really honest about what did—and didn’t—work as they were growing Barefoot Wines, and here they’ve presented guidelines and strategies that will work in any industry.

I’m a believer in “The Barefoot Method”—and you will be too.
Having founded and grown Barefoot wines from scratch, Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey clearly know what they’re talking about. When it comes to developing entrepreneurial employees, they have “been there done that”—and their book tells you exactly what they did to succeed. (Often, accompanied by funny stories.) Michael and Bonnie are the expert advisors any leader or aspiring leader needs to get the most out of their team. This book will help you diagnose any barriers to engagement that currently exist in your organization, and best of all, it gives you granular tactics to help all of your employees think and act like entrepreneurs.

Not your grandfather’s business book
By Wild Wood
I’ve read my fair share of business books that are heavy on theory but woefully light on actionable advice and real-world scenarios. That’s not what you’ll get when purchase The Entrepreneurial Culture. Right from the first chapter, which advises that you scale your organization down into only two divisions, you’ll find surprising, often counterintuitive ideas and specific step-by-step instructions on how to make them work for you. I see myself coming back to this book again and again.
