Mohammed Guller is the principal architect at Glassbeam, where he leads the development of advanced and predictive analytics products. He is a big data and Spark expert. He is frequently invited to speak at big data–related conferences. He is passionate about building new products, big data analytics, and machine learning.

Over the last 20 years, Mohammed has successfully led the development of several innovative technology products from concept to release. Prior to joining Glassbeam, he was the founder of TrustRecs.com, which he started after working at IBM for five years. Before IBM, he worked in a number of hi-tech start-ups, leading new product development.

Mohammed has a master's of business administration from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's of computer applications from RCC, Gujarat University, India.

Good (but very basic) book. More breath than depth

I liked the book. it nice and simple and good for beginners.

One issue I found is that this book covers the the entire spark eco-system (spark core, spark sql, spark streaming, mllib) in a very brief way. it doesn't go deep into any of the topics. This makes it very similar to the spark programming guide on the web which also adopts a similar pattern.

What would have been nice if the author would have gone deep into spark-core. Upon reading this book, it didn't teach me anything more than the spark programming guide

This book aims to provide a “...concise and easy-to-understand tutorial for big data and Spark”. How does it fare?

Spark is increasing the tool of choice for big data processing, being much faster than Hadoop’s MapReduce. After putting Spark into a big data context, the book aims to cover Spark’s core library, together with its more specialized libraries for Streaming, Machine Learning, SQL, and Graphing.

The book is aimed at developers that are new to Spark, some general background programming knowledge required, but little else.

Chapter 1 Big Data Technology Landscape

This chapter opens with a discussion about the current big data age, with data as the lifeblood of organizations, and growing exponentially. The standard 3Vs definition of big data is explored (velocity, variety, volume). Traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS) are unable to process these large volumes in a timely manner – this is where the scalability of big data systems comes into its own.

Next, the chapter discusses some technologies that are either used with Spark, or Spark competes with. The first technology is Hadoop, this is fault tolerant and scalable, and runs on commodity hardware. The three major components of Hadoop are discussed: YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), MapReduce (distributed processing model), and HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System). Spark is increasingly being used in place of MapReduce owning to its faster speed. The section briefly discusses Hive, a data warehouse with a SQL like interface, Spark SQL is expected to supersede Hive on many systems.

The chapter continues with a look at some common binary formats for serializing (storing on disk) big data, and their pros and cons. Specifically Avro, Thrift, Protocol Buffers, and SequenceFile are examined. Next, some column storage formats, which have performance advantages when the client requires a subset of columns, were briefly discussed, namely: RCFile, ORC, and Parquet.

Then a brief overview of messaging systems is provided, together with the advantages of having a layer of abstraction between producers and consumers. Specifically, Kafka and ZeroMQ are discussed with the aid of useful supporting diagrams.

NoSQL is then examined. The various types of NoSQL databases have different aims to the traditional RDBMS, typically trading Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability (ACID) for scalability and flexibility. The specific NoSQL databases briefly discussed are Cassandra and HBase. I sometimes wonder if it is meaningful to group NoSQL databases together. Is it meaningful to divide sports into Football and NoFootball? Are all the NoFootball sports meaningful as a group?

The chapter ends with a look at some distributed SQL query engines, these do not use MapReduce batch jobs, and are thus more oriented to interactive querying. The engines briefly examined are: Impala, Presto, and Apache Drill.

This chapter provides an excellent overview of big data technology. It should be noted there are many more technologies than described, but the examples given are sufficient to explain the topic areas. This is possibly the best backgrounder to big data I’ve read.

The discussions are very well written, concise and clear, with helpful diagrams, and no wasted words. There’s a good flow between the topics, and useful links between chapters. There are website links for further information. These traits apply to all the chapters in the book.

Conclusion

This book aims to provide a “...concise and easy-to-understand tutorial for big data and Spark”, and clearly succeeds. The book is exceptionally well written. Helpful explanations, diagrams, practical step-by-step walkthroughs, annotated code, inter-chapter links, and website links abound throughout.

The book is aimed at developers that are new to Spark, and explains concepts from the beginning. If you work through the book you should become competent in the use of Spark, there is much more to learn of course, but this book gives a solid foundation in both core Spark and its major specialized libraries: Streaming, Machine Learning, SQL, and Graphing.

The book is based on workshops given by the author, and clearly the feedback from these has been useful in creating this book, since it seems to have answered all the questions I had.

This book provides everything you need to know to get started with Spark, explained in an easy-to-follow manner. If you want to learn Spark, buy this book. Highly recommended

Well Organized and informative book

This book is a very well written definitive overview of Spark. This is a great book for those who want to learn about spark but dont know where to start from.
Fundamentals are very well explained in the book for developers who are new to spark. It starts with great overview of big data technology and helps in building basics and then moves on to explore more advanced topics. The book covers Spark core and its specialized add-on libraries too. This book also contains a plenty of sample examples which are really useful. Even if you are new to the subject this book has enough information to get a developer started on spark projects.
In short this book is really well organized, very informative and easy to follow. Highly recommended .

The butterflies never ceased fluttering in my stomach.
I was crossing my fingers.
I was holding my breath.
I was reading really slow - because her words warranted it.
It was like I was going to miss something if I hurried myself into it.
So there I was, grasping my reader tightly with those f!@$% butterflies in my stomach that couldn't stop fluttering.
Ms. A. Meredith Walters, I felt my heart stopped. My breathing hitched...
I never felt so much relief. OMG.
The butterflies followed me in my dreams.
This was such a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful read.
I just can't recommend it enough.

What happens when a girl who thinks she’s dying meets a man who is just learning how to live?

Are your hearts ready? Because this is not your ordinary sappy romance novel. Oh no, fellow readers, this one is far more complex than that. Yes, it has those cheesy moments that can melt hearts, it has some sprinkle of steam into it, but more than that, the overall effect of the book on me was like an eye-opener, an inspiration to those who are losing hope, and to those who can’t let go of their past. It’s time to stop and smell the flowers. It’s time to live.

There were times when I get frustrated because Corin was so wrapped up with herself and her mortality that she’s forgetting to live. She had lost so much at a young age, and she was afraid she’d die young. Her parents died when she was still in her teens and she had been the one to take care of them. She is experiencing panic attacks and anxiety and frets over little things that she thought could trigger her health to spiral downwards. She goes doctor shopping and gets angry when the doctors would assure her there’s nothing wrong with her. Some people would be glad to hear it, but her? Ugh.

"I think that you’re so scared of dying that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to live."

But him? He wasn’t perfect. Beck did the whole grief thing when he was recovering, but he passed through it. It was difficult knowing he couldn’t do the things he love anymore. But I love his new outlook in life, it was inspiring. He was living and embracing his life one moment at a time.

Most people do have baggage, and these two has a lot on their back. The girl who couldn’t grieve properly and couldn’t let go of her past and the man who had grieved his past life and is trying to move on. I thought it would have been a disaster for this two to meet. That it would have been unhealthy for them to be together, but I was wrong. They were meant for each other. He was good for her. They make each other feel so much than they could have ever imagine. So yes, I was wrong. They were pretty good for each other. She was the damsel in distress, and he was her prince charming.

"Because the way I feel when I’m around you is crazy. It’s out of control. I just want to touch you. I want to be with you. All. The. Time."

They are the most unlikely couple, but they made it work. The chemistry and affection was there. And just when they were just beginning to live their HEA, something happened. Something that made my heart stopped, I couldn’t stop reading! It was painful, excruciating and I was about to lose hope of an HEA that both of them desperately deserved. Will fate give them a chance?

Well-written, perfectly-paced and emotion-filled read. Butterfly Dreams is the kind of book that will take you into an emotional journey and give you the unexpected.

GOOD BUT DISAPPOINTING

When it comes to A. Meredith Walters, I’m always eager to devour each new book she writes. With every word she sets to paper, she successfully injects sensitivity and humanity to the story at hand. Thus, her knack for tackling difficult subjects should be applauded. In this regard, “Butterfly Wings” is no exception. Yet overall, I found the story to be good but somewhat disappointing.

Corin Thompson is the owner of Razzle Dazzle pottery shop. She is also a hypochondriac that suffers from extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Having never properly grieved the death of her parents, her anguish manifests itself in the form of non-existent ailments. Convinced that she suffers from a deadly heart condition, Corin decides to join a support group called Mended Hearts.

Enter Becket Kingsley. At only 28 years old, Beckett suffered a near-fatal heart attack as a result of a previously undetected, genetic heart condition. The once vibrantly active Beckett LITERALLY had his world turned upside down. But with a positive attitude and the help of his friends at Mended Hearts, Beckett is learning to enjoy life and to appreciate each moment as it comes.

When Corin arrives at Mended Hearts, both she and Beckett are surprised to discover that they have actually met before. During one of Corin’s panic attacks weeks earlier, Beckett was the stranger on the street that assisted her during the attack. For Corin, it was an embarrassing incident she’d rather forget. But over the ensuing weeks, Beckett hadn’t been able to put thoughts of Corin out of his mind. So for him, Corin’s unexpected arrival at Mended Hearts was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

Initial interactions between Corin and Beckett are awkward at best. But Beckett is determined to break down Corin’s walls by slowly immersing himself into her life. Corin’s abrasive attitude and brutally upfront personality is refreshing to Beckett. And Corin seems to understand him in ways that his friends and family can’t.

Fearful of losing another person close to her, Corin is determined to hold Beckett at a distance. But Beckett is nothing if not persistent. His desire to keep Corin in his life means convincing her to take a chance—a chance on life, a chance on love, and a chance on them. She needs to stop worrying about the possibility of death and simply focus on the here and now.

“Butterfly Dreams” is a good solid story, but not a great one. I wanted to love it—I really did. But I had a very hard time getting into the story and an even harder time connecting with Corin. While on a personal level, I was able to relate to the character’s anxiety issues and panic attacks, I found Corin’s constant rude and anti-social behavior to be off putting. Add to that her persistent negativity and refusal to accept help, and I found little to no reason for Beckett to want to stick around. While some might say Corin’s personality is quirky, I just found it to be annoying.

On the flip side, however, I ABSOLUTELY, 100%, FELL IN LOVE WITH BECKETT!! Despite having had his entire world turned upside down, Beckett was determined to live for the moment and to take joy in the fact that he was still very much alive. I marveled at his upbeat personality, chuckled at his humor, and swooned at his romantic words. But I DIDN’T feel the connection between him and Corin—in OR out of the bedroom. And that, especially, was a big issue for me.

As a reader, I accepted Corin into Beckett’s life, because she seemed to make him happy. Why, I’m not quite sure. Corin seemed a bit too self-absorbed for my liking. Aside from encouraging Beckett to pursue his photography, their relationship often appeared one-sided. Even when Beckett should have been angry with Corin—when he should have felt deceived; lied to—he chose to forgive rather than confront. While admiral, in theory, real life doesn’t quite work like that. Whatever happened to accountability for one’s actions? Yes, I can understand the REASONS behind Corin’s actions, but it certainly doesn’t EXCUSE them. And while Corin did finally came around by the end, for me, it was a case of “too little too late.”

Even more confusing to me than Corin and Beckett’s relationship is Corin’s relationship with her friend/business partner Adam. I found the whole side story to be odd, incomplete and generally unnecessary.

While it truly pains me not to be able to give “Butterfly Dreams” a glowing endorsement, I feel I must be totally honest in my assessment. Perhaps real life experience has jaded me to the frailties in Corin’s personality and other readers will be able to look upon Corin’s character with more compassionate eyes. I sincerely hope this is the case. But whether you fall in love with “Butterfly Dreams” or not, there is one important message that I hope we can all take away from Corin and Beckett’s story—a message we should ALL take to heart… regardless of what life throws at you, take joy in simply being alive.

Very, very special

Corin has lost both of her parents while she was still a teenager. Now that she's an adult she's still struggling with the consequences of that terrible loss. She's afraid of death and thinks something bad will happen to her. When she meets Beckett, a man who has a heart disease, who is trying to be positive and keep on living his life to the fullest, something changes. Both Beckett and Corin have to deal with their mortality in a completely different way and they find comfort with each other. They don't know what the future will have in store for them, but they're trying to make the most of the present...

Butterfly Dreams is a beautiful story about a difficult topic, mortality. A. Meredith Walters has described this in such a tender and compassionate way, I loved that. Corin and Beckett's direct communication and jokes are the perfect counterpart which makes the story balanced and complete. Corin's issues are mainly psychological and Beckett's are physical. They support one another and complement each other. They are both admirable people. I liked them immediately and was touched by their story.

I read this book with a smile on my face, but also with tears in my eyes. Butterfly Dreams is a story that makes the reader feel and think a lot. I like how important questions about life and living are being raised and how both of the main characters are trying to find their own answers to them. Corin and Beckett are beautiful people. This book can certainly be judged by its cover, it's as amazing on the inside as it is on the outside. Butterfly Dreams is moving, hopeful, realistic and very, very special.

I loved the scenes hero saves heroine. He was in love and he would do anything to claim her.

I love this read!!!! I love a good Regency Romance and Ms. Beaton wrote a good one in this read. (I only recommend if you understand the period of when it was written as it explains why characters acted certain way.) The hero is a strong alpha male that dresses as a dandy. So heroine doesn't take him seriously at first. Hero doesn't let that stop him, he fall instantly for heroine and is hot in pursuit.

'Silken Bonds' is part 2 of a series but can be read stand alone. Hero falls instantly for the heroine but her guardian has taught her that being with a man is weakness. So hero pulls all the stops to court her. He will bribe staff, ask former interest to play act a role to get close to the family, he buys house next door to her, he watches/stalks her, he finds out what she likes and does what he needs to do to keep her interested in seeing him, he will beg, he will try seduce, he will be her knight in shinning armor, and he will keep saving her countless times form dangers so he can finally claim her as his own.

The book has several twist and turns. This includes some scary situations that require he to save heroine several times, because her family has jewels would-be thiefs want. I loved these scenes, especially the final scene. He may look like a dandy but he fought like a man!!! He is older and more experienced. Heroine is na�ve and innocent, but was raised to think like a man. So hero has to be creative to try to win her over, but he is really all for equal rights and proves to her that he wants her as his equal!!!

The other subplot is they are trying to find out who her biological parents are but find that someone doesn't want them to know. I found this read exciting because of the action scenes, extremes hero goes to be able to see heroine and who doesn't want to read a dashing gentleman save a heroine :) There is strong chemistry between H/h and he is very romantic at times when thinking/describing her. However, all love scenes are behind closed doors. Most is heavy petting and kisses. It is a safe reads. Hero is loyal but his promiscuous past does come several times up. He makes sure heroine knows he only wants her several times. I believed him, because of the extremes he goes to win her over.

This is one of the better Chesney's of the few I have read. The characters are appealing, especially Lord Harry Danger who is a delight. The book is very short however and would be much better longer and more developed. I enjoyed reading it though, even if the pleasure only lasted a few hours!

About the Author
Michael P. Papazoglou holds the chair of Computer Science and is director of the INFOLAB at the Univ. of Tilburg in the Netherlands. he is also a honorary professor at the University of Trento in Italy. Prior to this (1991-6), he was full Professor and head of School of Information Systems at the Queensland University of Technology (QUR) in Brisbane, Australia. he also held senior academic positions at the Australian National University, the University of Koblenz, Germany, Fern Universitaet Hagen, Germany, and was principal research scientist at the National German research centre for Computer Science (GMD) in St. Augustin from 1983-9.

Papazoglou serves on several international committees and on the editorial board of nine international scientific journals and is co-editor in charge of the MIT book series on Information Systems. He has chaired numerous well-known international scientific conferences in Computer Science. These include the International Conference on data Engineering (ICDE), International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS), International Conference on Digital Libraries (ICDL), International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS), International Conference on Entity/Relationship Modelling and others. He is the founder of the International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS) and more recently of the International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC).

Papazoglou has authored or edited 15 books and approximately 150 scientific journal articles and refereed conference papers. His research was/is funded by the European commission, the Australian Research council, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and Departments of Science and Technology in Europe and Australia. He is a golden core member and a distinguished visitor of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Science section.

Pieter M. Ribbers holds the chair of Information Management at Tilburg University, The Netherlands, where he also is head of the Department of Information Systems and Management . From 1991 till 1994 he held a position as affiliated Professor Information Management at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. His interests span management of information technology (in particular question related to alignment and information economics), inter-organizational Systems (in particular electronic commerce), and the strategic and organization consequences of the use of information technology. He is active as researcher, lecturer and consultant. he has supervised more than 20 PhD theses and has contributed articles in this field to national and international professional journals and has (co)authored several books. He is active at international conferences in information systems (ECIS, HICSS, ICIS) and is a member of the editorial board of Information and Management - The International Journal of Information Systems Applications. He has also participated in research programs of the European Commission. As a consultant he has worked with companies such as Brunel, Nolan, Norton & Co., and ING Group especially in outsourcing, scenario development and information economics.

Out of date and poorly written.

I purchased this book only because it was a required text book for my Business Information Systems course. This book is probably the worst book I've used in all of my bachelors program. I agree with the other negative reviews completely. I'm very interested in the subject but this book is worse than "reading a dictionary" as another reviewer commented. It's like reading a phone book; specifically the white pages. It's outdated by today's e-business standards and uses almost zero real-world examples. The few case studies presented are terrible and very general.

It can provide some theory to get your mind headed in the right direction but that's only if you can stay awake past the first two pages. I'd recommend getting a book that has been more recently published and uses some recent practical examples to help the reader apply the knowledge.

Also, the section on the product page that says "Editorial Review" is incorrect. The review describes the details of a different book and does not summarize key points you will learn from this e-Business book. It's a mistake that Amazon has not yet caught.

Very good academic work but...

If you are new to e-business don't start with this book. The book present a very good investigation and strong academic work in general. The issue I have with it is that it's not practical and not written in a way that helps to understand and learn the concepts; it's like reading a dictionary or specifications documents. The case study material is minimun and no actual implementations are covered.
I guess it makes great reference material for someone who is developing/modifying e-Business tools.
