About the Author
Michael Hughes is Professor of Sociology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Vanderbilt University in 1979 and has taught introductory sociology over the past 34 years. He also regularly teaches courses in minority group relations, deviant behavior, the sociology of mental illness, and data analysis. From 2000 to 2004, he served as editor of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. He has held positions as research fellow at the University of Michigan�s Institute for Social Research (1992�1994) and research associate at Vanderbilt University (1980�1982). With Walter R. Gove he is the author of the book, Overcrowding in the Household. His research interests in mental health and mental illness, race and ethnicity, and crowding and living alone have resulted in over 60 professional articles published in a variety of journals. In 2004�2005, he served as president of the Southern Sociological Society..

CAROLYN J. KROEHLER is a professional writer and editor who has received her sociological education �on the job.� Before her work on Sociology: The Core, she contributed to criminology and criminal justice textbooks. She edited and helped with the writing of a guide to academic success for college students, Straight A�s: If I Can Do It, So Can You. At the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, she wrote public education and technical materials about water quality and other environmental issues, including a book on drinking water standards. A great Sociology college text.

I purchased this book for a university course in Sociology and can't recommend it enough. It's written in plain everyday language (no technical jargon) and all the concepts are explained simply yet in a way which naturally draws the student's/reader's attention and interest. My course was made easier and more interesting thanks to this book and the style in which it is written. Thanks to Michael Hughes and Carolyn Kroehler for such a well-written, interesting and innovative textbook.

Great Sociology Book

Most of you who will buy this book, will probably do so because it is required in a SOC101 class. If you have to buy this book, be happy, because this is an excellent book that covers a broad spectrum of Sociology. If you are wanting to enrich your knowledge of Sociology, then look no further. This is an excellent supplement for any other text.
This text is very informative in an easy to read and digest manner. The wording is extremely user friendly with interesting facts on sociological issues around the world. The book is filled with moving photographs of the plights of people around our country and the world. All in all, this is an enhanced edition that is made to surround the topics of Sociology in a manner that is comprehendable and fun. You will be happy that you bought it.

Pleasantly Surprised

I was surprised to find that the topics in this book are rather recent. Seeing as how most text books that cover "curent" topics,aren't curent at all, but rather from at least a decade ago.

Homemade Muscle is clearly inspirational. After reading it, you will have no excuses.

Although the whole book is worth reading and contains valuable (usable) information, the first four chapters are exceptional.

Chapter Four (What You Need To Know About Strength Training) is my favorite chapter. Anthony describes the differences between building strength and hypertrophy when doing body-weight training. He 'thoroughly' explains (among other things) what reps, sets, rest, and frequency to use to build strength and hypertrophy – and in what order. It is the best explanation that I've read on these topics, and I have over 300 fitness books in my personal library.

This is definitely a five star book.

Inspiring and Motivating

I was in a pretty severe accident about 10 months prior to purchasing this book. I had been t-boned by a motorcyclist speeding excessively. I sustained six broken ribs, fluid in the lungs, an injured spleen, and more. It took 4 months to recover, and the experience was excruciatingly terrible on so many levels. Like the author here, I am a lifelong athlete. I played competitive sports like Ice Hockey, and I made a career of my love for sports by teaching physical education. I also lived in Greece for a couple years when I was young, so I can relate to the lovely weather and ability it provides for an active lifestyle. So when I found out what this book was about and the story of the author, I knew I had to read it as I was struggling to get back on my feet and back to exercising.

The courage it must have taken for the author to write this is unreal. The shear detail of the accident and recovery is mind numbing. I was captivated as I read the story, and I felt like I was there. But the way he persevered and decided to move forward is inspiring. Having been through a life altering accident myself, his courage gave me some courage and made me feel not alone. Then to read about the project he created to help people be healthy was even more inspiring. Here is a guy who could have drowned in his sorrows, and he decided to turn it into a positive.

By the time I got to the portions on exercise, I already felt I was in trusting hands. The layout of the book is great. The way the chapters build on each other lets you slowly understand the points being made. Each idea builds on the next. Also the thoroughness of the information is amazing. For example, the section on the gym vs. home workouts makes the case for home so well. The book is easy to read, yet very informative. There are points I would not have considered. Every conceivable aspect of exercising at home is discussed. It really explains the how, why, what, and when of how to get fit at home. As some one who also has joined gyms only to not use them, the notion of exercising at home is new to me. This book shows it is possible. Beyond that, the book gives you applicable workouts to get stated.

In addition to the book, the website is a great tool. On there are videos, some of which are chapters in the book. Plus you can subscribe and get a free workout plan.

Even if you have not experienced a major trauma like this author, you can learn so much from this book. From life perspective and lessons to practical tips on how to get fit at home, this book is a winner just like the author.

Well I've read more than 100 books during the last couple of years of my life and to be honest I am very selective when it comes to choosing books to read. That means, I read only influencial books that can give you not only theory but a step by step practical application as well, books that literally can change your mindset and ultimately your life so you can achieve your dreams, become a better version of you and one day wake up as a different person, a superior one who never looks back.

Today I came across to the "HomeMade Muscle: Strong & Lean Without going to the Gym" by Anthonny Arvanitakis and what I liked most in this book is that Anthony walks his talk. This is what sets him apart of the crowd and we all know that these days you can rarely find authors who practice what they preach. Period!

I admit that this is not only a motivational book but it also contains a step by step blueprint of exercises (videos included) you can do at home every single day. Plus even though Anthony is not a doctor, his life's experience gives him the permission to give you tips and advice when it comes to injuries and diet. To make the long story short this book contains everything you need to know to build a solid and healthy body without expensive gym subscriptions.

The good news is that I put on 4 pounds of body mass within 30 days of applying what Anthony teaches. Yes you may say that the progress I make is not fast enough but it's stable and as long as there is a sustainable progress I win, and you can do the same. Just study this book and most importantly apply it in your everyday life because information is not power, but applying the information in real world and seeing real results is not only powerful but exhilarating as well.

This is amazing. Best book I ever bought and I didn't ...

Purchased this book three or so years ago. Read the first couple pages then just. Ever picked it up again. A month ago I was board and grabbed it off my shelf and started reading.. I had to read and re read pages. It is that interesting. I didn't care how long it took me to read it. For some reason I wanted to understand it. At this moment out of all the books I own this book is probably grabbed me more the anything. I am now trying to read book two but I think I'm going to retread this book a couple more times. This is amazing. Best book I ever bought and I didn't even know it. For the price you will get something priceless. A new understanding. Get a used copy. If you really like it as I do buy the hard copy after that. Buy it! now!

Food for Thought

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so, I ordered the rest of the series and am now halfway through "The Stairway to Heaven."
About the only flaw I found in "The 12th Planet," was Sitchin's abrupt beginning and dense prose. Reading it was a bit like listening to someone speak heavily accented English.
I'm not saying I agree 100% with what he says. I did, however, find it fascinating and the length and breadth of his research astounding.
My suggestion, dear reader, is to do as I did. Buy this book, read it and if you find it and the theories in it intriguing, buy and read the rest.
Ignore all the hoopla for and against you may read here. Read the book and make up your own mind. If nothing else, Sitchin will give you lots to think about for a long time to come.
Oh... and to answer one of the other "reviewers" questions about Niburu breaking up like a comet. Why would it? It's in orbit (according to Sitchin) like all the other planets and since when do comets "break up" anyway? The only time they do is if they run into something like Jupiter.
And Sitchin addresses the idea (far too briefly) of how life could possibly originate on a planet that spends most of its time so far away from the sun. Heat, not light, is what is necessary (he says) for the formation of life. He theorizes that Niburu generates its own heat. {shrug} As good a theory as any, I guess.

Alternative History at it's Best !!!

Very radical alternative history at it's best. Only for the open minded. After reading this book, I realized how much it complemented many of Velikovsky's books,"World's in Collison", "Earth in Upheaval", and "Velikovsky Reconsidered". I highly recommend these to the reader to supplement Sitchin's books. There is a lot of commonality, but Velikovsky approaches his theories as more of a scientist, than from a religious point of view.
Sitchin provides a very detailed approach to deciphering ancient Sumerian history, biblical references, to the history of Earth, Man, and Gods. His theories explain an alternate history to traditional teachings. However, one thing he doesn't actually explain is, "Who created the Nefilim?". I am about to read,"The End of Days", I hope he explains this in that book.
I have used the exterrestrial concept of cloning and infiltrating the Earth in one of my stories (Aliens?) in my book, "The Nightmare Trilogy", available on amazon. However, I use a different concept of the aliens, perhaps, they were from here originally.

About the Author

Mr. Kim Andreasson has advised the United Nations on e-government since 2003, most recently in preparation for the global 2012 e-government survey, and is a managing director of DAKA advisory AB, a consultancy. He was previously an associate director and a senior editor at The Economist Group’s Business Research division where he co-edited the annual report on the Digital Economy Rankings. Andreasson is an elected member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies and the Pacific Council of International Policy and is a John C. Whitehead Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Information Technology and Politics.

Service Dogs: Information Every Handler should know book

I am new to the world of service dogs. I have MS and am currently training my own service dogs for mobility assistance as I have developed balance issues. I think everyone that utilizes a service dog should have this book. It is very important to know your rights and the laws as they apply to your service dog. The book is broken out in easy to read sections and you can find the information you need quickly and easily. I read it from cover to cover and I found information I hadn't known I needed. Again, I highly recommend this book!

I wish there were more books with this perfect blend of action, a little romance, and a kick a** heroine!

I haven't found a series this enjoyable ever. Loye creates amazing characters and fast paced plot lines that keep your attention throughout the entire story. I love learning more about Valkyrie and seeing the struggle of being a bada** female and all the prejudices that come with it. The chemistry between the two main characters felt authentic and made me feel a part of their story. I loved seeing Dani again as well as Jake. Their story was the first book, and I kinda fell in love with them previously. But this second book was just as enthralling and special.

Looking forward to the books! Five stars for sure! Now, I'm gonna go read these two books again while I wait for the next release...

Finally, a book I cannot put down!

I love this series. Strong characters, great plots, and believable relationships! I'm running on lack of sleep, and on my day off I should be doing chores, but the books are too good to put down--even in the middle of the night. Can't wait for a lot more in the series!
