Hollowing Out the Middle: The Rural Brain Drain and What It Means for America, by Patrick J. Carr, Maria J. Kefalas

In 2001, with funding from the MacArthur Foundation, sociologists Patrick J. Carr and Maria J. Kefalas moved to Iowa to understand the rural brain drain and the exodus of young people from America’s countryside. They met and followed working-class “stayers”; ambitious and college-bound “achievers”; “seekers,” who head off to war to see what the world beyond offers; and “returners,” who eventually circle back to their hometowns. What surprised them most was that adults in the community were playing a pivotal part in the town’s decline by pushing the best and brightest young people to leave.

In a timely, new afterword, Carr and Kefalas address the question “so what can be done to save our communities?” They profile the efforts of dedicated community leaders actively resisting the hollowing out of Middle America. These individuals have creatively engaged small town youth—stayers and returners, seekers and achievers—and have implemented a variety of programs to combat the rural brain drain.  These stories of civic engagement will certainly inspire and encourage readers struggling to defend their communities.

Life in Flyover Country
By Hoosier Mamma
I read this book after hearing one of the authors interviewed on the radio. I live in a rural area but did not grow up here so the subject matter was near and dear to me. As I read it, I found myself nodding in agreement over and over. Yes, this IS how life operates in rural and small town areas of flyover country, although many of the families who have lived here for generations refuse to see it. I have seen my own area decline greatly in the 30 years we have called it home and this book explains why.
If you live in a rural area, or strive to understand those in mid-America, this book is a great place to start. After I read it, I passed it on to my husband and then my children (who grew up and moved away, like so many others have) and we were all in a agreement that yes, this is how it is.

Hollowing Out the Middle Rings True
By olingerstories
Carr and Kefalas's HOLLOWING OUT THE MIDDLE:THE RURAL BRAIN DRAIN AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR AMERICA is a scientific, yet heart-felt look at the demise of small town rural America. Setting up in a renamed Iowa town, the authors ask why the best and the brightest often leave their heartland roots behind and then ask what can be done to reverse the trend. They divide rural young people up into four main categories:

1) The Achievers--those who are not only personally driven to succeed, but praised throughout their communities for their talent and achievements. They earn awards, go off to college, and never return because they have over-qualified themselves to return home.

2) The Stayers--those who want to make a go of it in the only place they have ever called home. They love their families, the community, and the opportunity to raise their kids in the homeland, despite the fact that employment opportunities are limited and the chance to earn high wages low.

3) The Seekers--As Carr and Kefalas put it, "What the Seekers know, with the utmost certainty is that they do not want to stay in the countryside all of their lives."

4) The Returners--Whether an Achiever or a Seeker, the Returners decide in time that there is no place like home, even if that means a lower standard of living or the abandonment of a dream.

As one who left a small town, the descriptions and motivations of each group are spot on. I felt as if I was re-living my own upbringing and decisions. In that regard, the book is gripping. The book's weakness rests in the solutions that Carr and Kefalas propose. They recommend immigration and the broadening of the population base, which have the feel of abstract and sociological solutions out of a textbook. Their attempt to help is honest, but the truth is that no one has the solution.

Great Perspective on School Systems in General
By R. F. A.
What I liked most about this book is how you could easily compare the shrinking town in Iowa, "Ellis," to many countries that are also experiencing a brain drain. Both my parents are immigrants (to the US) so I am a product of a brain drain, and have been hearing about it all my life. I never thought about the rural brain drain, because migration to the city has always seemed to me as a sign of modernization, in fact this book counters Florida's Rise of the Creative Class, which talks about how cities need to have culture and a cool reputation as well as businesses with flexibility and a cool reputation to attract the best professionals.

Hollowing out the Middle shows that small town school systems and communities dig their own graves by preparing the best students to leave, while kind of ignoring the ones likely to stay. The ones who leave also tend to be wealthier or prettier and have families with good reputations - this favoritism isn't unique to the Heartland. Even if the ones more likely to stay were given more attention, the authors show that the lack of jobs and the lack of things to do is the main reason people leave.

My favorite story from the book is about a "Mike Craun," softspoken, hardworking, recent father, who partied like a crazy person and took a lot of drugs which one night resulted in him totaling a brand new car and almost getting arrested for arson: "'Why did you get ito all this crazy stuff?' we ask. Mike answers, 'I was just bored.'" I think that this is 70% of the motive behind any teenager or young person or maybe any person getting into drugs or drinking. Boredom is the real plague of rural America, and small towns everywhere.

Overall this book is a quick and easy read and uses many stories to illustrate how rural America is making itself extinct and how it can improve.

Found a Typo
By M. Geyer
This really isn't a review of the book. Just a place to let the author - or somebody who can get to the author - know that I believe there is a typo on pg 455 on the Temp. derate factors. I'm thinking the T factor for the 350 degree F & 177 degree C should be .933 and not .033. I only looked briefly through it on-line, all I can say is it helped me out and was easy to follow!! I'm thinking of going to get one after I'm done writing this.

Wit: A Play, by Margaret Edson

Winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, and the Oppenheimer Award

Margaret Edson's powerfully imagined Pulitzer Prize–winning play examines what makes life worth living through her exploration of one of existence's unifying experiences—mortality—while she also probes the vital importance of human relationships. What we as her audience take away from this remarkable drama is a keener sense that, while death is real and unavoidable, our lives are ours to cherish or throw away—a lesson that can be both uplifting and redemptive. As the playwright herself puts it, "The play is not about doctors or even about cancer. It's about kindness, but it shows arrogance. It's about compassion, but it shows insensitivity."

In Wit, Edson delves into timeless questions with no final answers: How should we live our lives knowing that we will die? Is the way we live our lives and interact with others more important than what we achieve materially, professionally, or intellectually? How does language figure into our lives? Can science and art help us conquer death, or our fear of it? What will seem most important to each of us about life as that life comes to an end?

The immediacy of the presentation, and the clarity and elegance of Edson's writing, make this sophisticated, multilayered play accessible to almost any interested reader.

As the play begins, Vivian Bearing, a renowned professor of English who has
spent years studying and teaching the intricate, difficult Holy Sonnets of the
seventeenth-century poet John Donne, is diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. Confident of her ability to stay in control of events, she brings to her illness the same intensely rational and painstakingly methodical approach that has guided her stellar academic career. But as her disease and its excruciatingly painful treatment inexorably progress, she begins to question the single-minded values and standards that have always directed her, finally coming to understand the aspects of life that make it truly worth living.

Amazon.com Review
Wit is that rare beast: art that engages both the heart and the mind. "It is not my intention to give away the plot," Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., announces near the beginning of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "but I think I die at the end. They've given me less than two hours." For two hours, this famed Donne scholar takes center stage, interrupting her doctors, nurses, and students to explicate her own story, its metaphors and conceits. Recently diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer, she is being treated with an experimental drug cocktail administered in "eight cycles. Eight neat little strophes." The chemo makes her feel worse than she ever thought possible; in fact, the treatment is making her sick, not the disease--an irony she says she'd appreciate in a Donne sonnet, if not so much in life.

Throughout, Vivian finds, the doctors study and discuss her body like a text: "Once I did the teaching, now I am taught. This is much easier. I just hold still and look cancerous. It requires less acting every time." As her time draws to a close, a sea change begins to work in the way Vivian thinks about life, death, and indeed, Donne. His complex, tightly knotted poems have always been a puzzle for her formidable intellect, a chance to display "verbal swordplay" and wit. Her sickness presents an entirely different challenge. A powerful, prickly personality, capable of dry asides even during a bout of gut-wrenching nausea ("You may remark that my vocabulary has taken a turn for the Anglo-Saxon"), Vivian develops a new appreciation for the simple, the maudlin, the kind. Not to give away the plot, but the final moments in Margaret Edson's debut are as wrenching--as human--as anything in recent drama. --Mary Park

Being Real as Death Approaches
By JAHay
This book took me by the scruff of the neck and rebuked me for the 'posturing' and 'trying to impress others' type of behaviour, that I and others so often engage in. What do our 'achievements' matter in the face of death? After reading this book, I saw the importance of being 'real', and of being a decent person. I saw too the importance that forgiveness is to those of us who carry weights that have accrued from wrongdoings committed during a lifetime. The 'professionalism' of some of the characters in the play made them seem more akin to robots that to people with a heart and a soul. Being human, with all its frailties and doubts is far preferable to being a machine like character. This book left me with a sense of hope, and longing even, and anxiety too, in the sense that I am moving irrevocably towards the day when I too will take my last gasping breath. But then there is John Donne's word;
'One short sleep past, and then we wake eternally; death will be no more, death shall die.'

'THIS IS MY PLAYES LAST SCENE ...'
By David Keymer
If poisonous minerals, and if that tree,
Whose fruit threw death on else immortall us,
If lecherous goats, if serpents envious
Cannot be damn'd; Alas; why should I bee?
...
That remember them [i.e., his sins], some claime as debt,
I think it mercy, if thou wilst forget.

W;t is a clever play, starting with its title. For wit is the weapon the great metaphysical poet John Donne used in his sonnets to approach an unapproachable God and the protagonist of this play, Vivian Bearing, Ph. D., is a Donne scholar whose great book is a study of Donne's twelve Holy Sonnets. (The book is entitled Made Cunningly.) And the use of the semicolon in place of an `I' between the first and last letters of the title echoes a remembered conversation between Vivian, still an undergraduate student, and her soon to be mentor, E. M. Ashford, on the importance of punctuation in Donne's poems.

And death shall be no more, comma, Death thou shalt die.

Nothing but a breath -a comma- separates life from life everlasting. It is very simple really. With the original punctuation restored,
death is no longer something to act out on a stage, with exclamation points. It's a comma, a pause. This way, the uncompromising
way, one learns something from this poem, wouldn't you say? Life, death. Soul, God. Past, present. Not insuperable barriers, not
semicolons, just a comma.

(I suppose a comma would have looked wrong in the title typographically, but the use of the comma still carries forward the conceit of only an item of punctuation separating the beginning of something from the end, in this case, Vivian's life.)

The play is cunningly put together, essentially a monologue that continues from beginning until near the very end of the play (Vivian's conversation with the audience about her treatment) interspersed with brief scenes of Vivian with her doctor, Vivian with the nurse and with the technicians, Vivian and the research fellow in medical oncology (who once took her course on the sonnets -"you can't get into medical school unless you're well-rounded") and scenes of remembrance Vivian as an undergraduate with her mentor, Vivian teaching). The play ends in a swirl of activity as Vivian's systems fail. So it's In (Vivian monologuing), Out (swirl of activity, interchanges with other characters), In, Out. It happens over and over again, until the final burst of activity, after which it all just . . . ends.

One of the most interesting aspects of the play is the way it captures character. Vivian, ill, discovers that the research fellow, just like her in the classroom, cares less for the people he's caring for than the subject he's studying. But, bitterly ill now, Vivian wants him to care for her, needs care. And thus, responds to the decidedly unintellectual advances of her nurse, who at least accepts that it is part of her job to comfort the frightened and ailing.

This is my playes last scene, here heavens appoint
My pilgrimages last mile; and my race
Idly, yet quickly runne, hath this last pace,
My spans last inch, my minutes last point,
My body, `and my soule

John Donne, 1609

A Lesson in Humility
By Linda Wheatley
The lesson of humility is the last and hardest to acquire. It requires a shift from a modern paradigm that equates "success" with "accomplishment"--something that can be achieved through competition or will--to an older, "simpler" paradigm rooted in surrender and acceptance--a paradigm that sees grace as a gift requiring only the ability to seek, ask, and receive. It is simple but not easy. Vivian learns all this in the final nine-months of her life as she "learns to suffer" whilet dying from stage four ovarian cancer. With only her wit to defend and sustain her. from the dehumanizing forces of the medical "machine." Vivian is ransformed from a critical, and evaluative "senior-scholar" to a vulnerable human-being seeking only "the touch of human kindness" in her final confrontation with her own mortality...

The World That Trade Created: Society, Culture, and the World Economy, 1400 to the Present, by Kenneth Pomeranz, Steven Topik

In a series of brief, highly readable vignettes, the authors bring to life international trade and its actors--merchants and bankers, pirates and privateers, sailors and slaves, traders and tree tappers. In the process they make clear that the seemingly modern concept of economic globalization has deep historical roots. The third edition provides expanded coverage of the twentieth century, new selections on silver and gold in Brazil and Mexico, the rise of Panama as a financial center, the transition from coal to oil, fair trade laws, and the expansion of offshore manufacturing since World War II. A new illustration program has been added that offers a more visual appeal to the text.

Less informative than disorienting
By Adle
I wanted to like this book. As you begin reading, Pomeranz and Topik seem to have good intentions, and indeed present interesting information throughout, but nevertheless their style is confusing and haphazard. Though they purport to organize by topic and chronologically, they barely manage the first and completely fail at the second. Of course, all of history and particularly economics overlaps to significant degrees, but this book only made a denser web of this inter-relatedness. The authors jump from topic to topic, and (very annoyingly) repeat concepts which they have already discussed once, twice, even three times in earlier sections. Partly illustrating the fact that no chronological order is followed is the note in the introduction that says the second section discusses "the role of violence in capital accumulation and market formation," and "Chapter 5 examines the role of transportation improvements in linking up distant markets and intensifying trade" (xiv). However, the table of contents lists Chapter 2 as the one which discusses transportation, while Chapter 5 talks about violence. If even the authors have difficulties organising their topics, there is little hope that the reader will be able to follow their organisation. Though some of their information was interesting and relevant to world history, it was presented in such a disorienting fashion that little could be gained from the reading. Additionally, I felt as though the authors made significant exaggerations and generalisations on some topics, particularly related to the economics of drugs, the morals of pirates, and the views of foods like potatoes.

You will want to collect each edition
By Bernie
I actually came across this book in a used bookstore. It was nestled among exotic history books. I read the introduction and fell in love. Later I read other peoples reviews and some people pointed out a few faux pas in the second edition I decided also to buy a copy in the third edition. That is when I found out that the authors it changed the focus of the book to being more on the 20th century and 21st century. This book being more geared I would suppose it is a textbook needed to adjust to its potential audience. So some articles were removed others were incorporated. I suggest if you have an earlier version to keep it; however you also need a newer edition for corrections and changes in focus.

For my new copy I chose the electronic Kindle format. The drawback is that it does not contain links to references inside the book so you have to know how to get to those particular locations if you want to read more on the subject that you are currently reading. It is quite annoying. There is however a go to button which will take you to the beginning of each section. I am one of those people that cannot stand to scribble in books as when time changes and interest, scribbling can be annoying. On the Kindle edition you can make notes and remove them at will. One great advantage is that it has text-to-speech which allows you to listen in the background if you are mobile or have other visual imperatives such as taking care of cats.

I bought this book primarily to learn about different commodities and their trades. There are many books that specialize in individual commodity such as coffee, tea, and salt. There are others dedicated to plants of which I learned about Wardian Cases (Green cargoes. by Anne. Dorrance [19450]), and some dedicated to dyes such as "A Perfect Red: Empire, Espionage, and the Quest for the Color of Desire by Amy Butler Greenfield." While in the process of gleaning this information I have come to appreciate the other aspects of this book including "society, culture, and world economy."

I assume this book is used as a textbook somewhere due to the nature of its organization. Information mostly comes from a column from "World trade magazine."

I hope you have as much fun as I have had reading this and I am now working on the abbreviated bibliography and hope one day that Kenneth Pomeranz and Steve Topik will write a more in-depth book.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Braun's disappointing 28th Cat Who... novel (after 2004's The Cat Who Went Bananas) mostly follows journalist Jim "Call Me Qwill" Qwilleran as he runs around Pickax City, Mich., getting things ready for the town's blow-out celebration of its sesquicentenary. Many books ago, Qwill inherited tons of money and set up a foundation to benefit Pickax. Now that story line has become a caricature, with Qwill's fund popping up and financing yet another venture virtually every chapter. The "mystery" concerns Nathan and Doris Ledfield, a wealthy couple whose only heir is an obnoxious, greedy nephew. When late in the tale the Ledfields die... well, let's just say that no one will be surprised to learn who was behind their deaths, or what his motive was. Lame plotting isn't the only problem. The characterization is not just thin, it's anorexic. Perhaps it's time to put this series, which once defined feline fiction, to sleep. Mystery Guild main selection. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Anyone who has ever exclaimed, "Cats!" with a mixture of affection, frustration, and admiration is bound to fall (or has already fallen) for this venerable series (27 novels young) featuring Koko and Yum Yum, the svelte and savvy Siamese. This time the marvelously mustached Jim Qwilleran, more familiarly known as "Qwill," and his feline friends relax in their converted apple-barn home in Pickax City, Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere." Frantic activity occurs around them, as Pickax prepares for its sesquicentennial with parades and other festivities. As the richest man around (thanks to an inheritance), Qwill is called upon to lead or partake in many events and write about others in his "Qwill Pen" newspaper column. Meanwhile, a terrible storm threatens the celebration, and the mysterious deaths of a wealthy couple lead to questions about murder. With its familiar characters, cozy plots, and happy endings, this series remains as comforting as a warm cat in your lap on a rainy day. Jenny McLarin

Moxie: The Dachshund of Fallingwater, by Cara Armstrong

Children experience the renowned Frank Lloyd Wright house that boldly cantilevers over a waterfall in the western Pennsylvania mountains through the eyes of the Kaufmann family's most beloved dog in residence. Beginning with the initial site survey, the loveable dachshund reflects on the myriad details that make the Big House so special. Moxie and her siblings' preferred picnic site, the rock, becomes the foundation that supports the residence's dramatic design, and the grand fireplace built around the big rock provides a warm stone where the dogs nap whenever they want. Fallingwater's steep, cascading staircase mimics the waterfall and parallels the house's dramatic descent down the hillside, and the plunge pool built into the stream is just right for a brisk, refreshing swim. A handy glossary features both images and text to explain key architectural terms.

Great story
By ChrisK
I love dachshunds and interesting architecture so this was perfect for me. I had really never read much about this house; now I would love to go there. The book is advanced for my granddaughter (3)and I think I enjoyed it more than she did. She did enjoy all the things the doxies did. I enjoyed reading more about the history of the house.

Terrific!
By Eileen
I bought this for my 8 year old granddaughter who wants to be an architect. This is a cute story and so informative. She loves Frank Lloyd Wright so needless to say, it's one of her favorites. Her first love is Iggy Peck, the Arcitect.

upper grade school level (Gr 3-5)

This is a story about the Franklin Llyod Wright's home "Fallingwater". It's a great book about his architectural style, and how it was created for the owners and their 7 dachshunds. In 1964, the house became a museum open to the public. The proceeds of this book go directly to preserving Fallingwater and supporting its education programs. Definitely more suited to older primary grades.
