About the Author

David Coghlan is Professor of Organization Development at the School of Business, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland and is a Fellow of the College. He specializes organization development and action research and participates actively in the both communities internationally. He has published over 80 articles and book chapters. Recent co-authored books include: Collaborative Strategic Improvement through Network Action Learning (Edward Elgar, 2011), Organization Change and Strategy (Routledge, 2006), and co-editor of Managers Learning in Action, (Routledge, 2004). He is co-editor (with Mary Brydon-Miller) of the Encyclopedia of Action Research and of the 4 volume set, Fundamentals of Organization Development (Sage, 2010). He is a member of the editorial advisory board of several journals, including Action Research, The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Action Learning: Research and Practice, Systemic Practice and Action Research and OD Practitioner. He is currently co-editing (with Rami Shani) a 4 volume set, Action Research in Business andManagement (Sage, 2015).

Teresa Brannick (1950-2012) was a lecturer in the business research programme at the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business at University College, Dublin, Ireland. Her undergraduate degree was in mathematics, her masters in sociology and her Ph.D. in marketing research. She had been a practising researcher for over thirty years and had published over thirty research papers in such diverse fields as epidemiology, public policy, industrial relations and marketing. She was the editor-in-chief of Irish Journal of Management and a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Management. She was co-editor of Business Research Methods: Theories, Techniques and Sources (Oak Tree Press: Dublin, 1997).

Zzzzzzz!!

I'd rather watch Twilight movie than read this book, which I presume was written by the teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.....after he lost his personality. Seriously, terribly written, confusing, and impractical in a real business environment. I only read this for one of my MBA courses, otherwise I would have stopped at page 3. If you aren't being forced to read it, run screaming.

This was a required text for a college course. It is a very dry read and although it outlines the principles of Action Research it was not as helpful or as reader friendly as some other texts that we used.

Required Text for graduate work

Although in graduate course work, this book was a terrible read. Not engaging and found myself re-reading paragraphs because my mind would wander... This was a required text (none the less), I utilized it for papers. However, on research guided questions I suggest reading Stringer Action Research,Not only was this book user friendly. The examples provided real world accessiability that Coghlan and Brannick did not... Oops sorry

In the Fall of 1857, some 120 California-bound emigrants were killed in lonely Mountain Meadows in southern Utah; only eighteen young children were spared. The men on the ground after the bloody deed took an oath that they would never mention the event again, either in public or in private. The leaders of the Mormon church also counseled silence. The first report, soon after the massacre, described it as an Indian onslaught at which a few white men were present, only one of whom, John D. Lee, was actually named.

With admirable scholarship, Mrs. Brooks has traced the background of conflict, analyzed the emotional climate at the time, pointed up the social and military organization in Utah, and revealed the forces which culminated in the great tragedy at Mountain Meadows. The result is a near-classic treatment which neither smears nor clears the participants as individuals. It portrays an atmosphere of war hysteria, whipped up by recitals of past persecutions and the vision of an approaching "army" coming to drive the Mormons from their homes.

About the Author

Juanita Brooks held appointment as a field fellow of the Henry E. Huntington Library and was enabled to carry out the original research for her book by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. She was the author of two other books and edited, with Robert Glass Cleland, A Mormon Chronicle: The Diaries of John D. Lee (Henry E. Huntington Library. 1955)

Jan Shipps is the author or editor of several books on Mormonism, including Sojourner in the Promised Land: Forty Years among the Mormons.

First Authoritative, Honest Text About Mt. Meadows

Juanita Brooks, a life-long southern Utahn, used her considerable native talent, her drive for the truth, and many years of effort to compile this first exhaustive, honest examination of the Mountain Meadows massacre. It is especially impressive given the fact that Ms. Brooks wasn't by vocation a historian or scholar. Her narrative is lucid and complete. Her analysis has proven, in the context of additional investigation, to be principally correct. Throughout it all, Ms. Brooks remained also a faithful LDS (Mormon) woman, in spite of her disappointments with her contemporary LDS church leadership as it related to her investigation. This should be a starting point for any serious student of the Mountain Meadows massacre. Ms. Brooks shows us a world of grays with very human characters whom she places into a carefully resurrected context.

This was a hard story to tell. The Mountain Meadows Massacre is one of Mormondom's most infamous stories, and one which members have steered clear of for years. It is amazing that this book was written so long ago, and yet so many of us are still uninformed on what happened.
What Ms. Brooks has done is recreate the context in which this terrible act occurred. The Mormons of the southern colonies were in a highly aroused state knowing that the army of the United States was marching their way. The emigrant party was overly boisterous, deriding the Mormons, their leaders, and threatening to raise an army in California to return to destroy Utah. The Indians wanted some "action" against the "Merrycats" (Americans) in retaliation for the poisoning death of some of their tribe, and the Mormons new they needed the alliance of the Chiefs if they were to offer any kind of effective resistence to the army that would arrive that next spring. All of this contributed to a sense of mob action that every one of the participants would later regret. What is important about this book, however, is that it helps you understand that it was not a mere malicious act of vengence or wickedness; it came in the context of war, among a group of frightened farmers who had been driven from their homes by violent mobs at least two or three times in the past 15 years. Of course, it doesn't minimize the heinous act.....
It is also important in understanding the apparently diliberate sacrifice of John D. Lee, the only participant who was ever brought to trial, and who was ultimately executed at the Mountain Meadows. His loyalty to Brigham Young and the Church ultimately set him up to be the scapegoat, with the Church relying on the Book of Mormon phrase "it is better that one man should perish than a whole nation dwindle in unbelief." They knew that a fair trial would drag the upper eschelons of the Church hierarchy through the mud, and the preservation of the Church depended on that not happening.
While there are those who will criticize this work for some of its statistical inaccuracies (how many died in the Fancher party...), it is important to keep in mind that this book was written at a time when Mormon History was very difficult to obtain. It is remarkable that the story could be so well researched at all, and if there are errors, they certainly seem excusable to me. This book is still the standard for anyone who studies the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

the book that open the ugly chapter

This was the book that first got me interested in the Mountain Meadow Massacre, what I called the 9-11 of 19th Century. It was one of the biggest mass murders in the history of the American west and ironically speaking, the killers were white men, murdering white people in cold blood. With considerable courage, the author painted a very clear picture of what this massacre was all about and within her limited means, gave a cause and effect of the incident. I used that term "limited means" because the author was (now deceased) a member of LDS and she probably compromised some of more inflamatory elements of the massacre so other writers like Will Bagley and Sally Denton can go at it. Her defense of John D. Lee was bit surprising to me but I figured that she knew that Lee was nothing more then a scrapgoat for the Mormon Church. But she did not take any inroads to the actual responsibility of the massacre. Like I wrote in the earlier reviews on books written by Bagley and Denton, I would considered this book to be a valuable first book of three that honestly deal with the Mountain Meadow Massacre.

Asians Just Seem to do Pools Better

I don't know why, but it seems that the Asian, and particularly the tropical Asian artechiture has a much better understanding of the use of water, expecially flowing water than we do in this country. Particularly they seem to have a sense of combining water with stone and wood that gives a serene look often missing in the usual US designs.

This is a spectacular picture book of mostly small pools incorporated into the private garden of a house. They are mostly located in Bali, Singapore and Thailand. The architecture of the houses that go with these pools, often just an outside porch is all you can see, reflect the climate of these tropical locations.

As with all such books, this is an idea book that first is pleasing to the eye, and second can be used in the design of the new house you are working on.

Saddened

I was disappointed that so many of the photos were taken at the same locations and used thoughout the book - I would have preferred to see additional sites. I was very excited by the cover photo but I'm afraid that I was left very ho-hum by the end of the book, not only by the duplicates, but even the chosen sites were not as dazzling as I imagined they would be from that part of the world. I had planned to purchase other books in this series but now that is very doubtful.

Have Seen Better

Although beautifully photographed and living up to its title of "Contemporary" (was printed in 2005), I have seen better pools and gardens in Asia (having lived there for 10 years). I felt the author/editor needed to have dug a little more deeply to find more enchanted gardens, of which there are many throughout the region. Overall, it didn't inspire me, a bit boring and the colour of the photographs is a bit bleached out.

Like Sophia's other books, this is a really cute book. Everything is easy and there are many little specific spells to get what you want, for example to get scholarship or grant money. The book is funny and cute, and although these books always say they are for entertainment, Who Knows?!

Pastor's premarriage counseling

I have used Gary's book since I first discovered it many years ago. Of all the materials that I have found helpful in marriage counseling this one is at the top. It's practical, down to earth, and applicable to daily life. I have every couple who is planning on getting married read it. However, the people who seem to get the most out of it are those who have been married for a while and have a few emotional bruises to prove it. Thanks for a great resource. Totally an eye opener...filled with tools to use everyday with every relationship. Things you thought you knew you actually didn't. Enlightening and fun. Use with a group or a select few. About the Author
Vincent R. Waldron is a Professor of Communication Studies (College of Human Services) at Arizona State University, where he is also affiliated member of the gerontology faculty. Douglas L. Kelley is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies (College of Human Services) at Arizona State University, where he teaches courses such as Family Communication, Inner-City Families, Communication in Personal Relationships, and Conflict Management.

'Marriage at Midlife' is a Wonderful and Amazing Achievement By Dr. Vince Waldron and Dr. Douglas Kelley of
Arizona State University West. Clearly, it is A Must Read For Scholars, Counseling Students and Couples hoping to better understand, maintain, and improve the relationships that they believe are so valuable to them. The text, their special joint project, offers boundless rich and accurate, scientifically-based, information on a plethora of topics; such as: boundaries in interpersonal relationships, how to improve or maintain them, etc; More importantly, what Waldron and Kelley's very seminal work here is about--their amazing contribution to the scientific literature is on a very important topic: Interpersonal Forgiveness. Waldron and Kelley's (2009) Interpersonal Forgiveness Model is evinced. That is it makes sense and is pragmatic-- how to heal from partner's transgressions and begin the process of forgiveness of ones spouse. This is a cogent, thorough and well thought out discussion of numerous topics related to aging and relationships and communication theory.
