About the Author
Deanna MacDonald teaches art and architectural history at Temple University's Tokyo campus and writes extensively about Japan's art, architecture and cultural heritage. Her most recent book was New Japan Architecture published by Tuttle.

A book as well constructed as the stunning houses it describes

What a beautiful and informative book! It's a delight to dip in and out of, but reading from cover to cover gives real insight into both the traditions of Japanese architecture and the principles of eco living. The floor plans and cross-sections for each of the crisply described houses allow the reader to see the exquisitely photographed rooms and features as parts of a whole. The end-of-chapter pages on key terms such as engawa and passive qualities then explain the ideas that underpin the projects. Four chapters on exemplary Japanese houses are given relevance to Western readers by the closing chapter which shows their influence on work in Toronto, Norway, Scotland and Prague.
