About the Author
Darroch "Rocky" Young culminated 37 years in higher education by serving as Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District. In his retirement, he has provided presentations and consulting services throughout the United States. Before becoming Chancellor, Rocky Young was President of Pierce College (California). Under his leadership, the college made a complete turnaround that the L.A. Times called “The Miracle on Winnetka”. Prior to coming to Pierce College, Rocky Young served in a variety of faculty and administrative positions at Santa Monica College.

Why this book is better than traditional books on leadership

Bookstore shelves are filled with books that catalog leadership theories from A to Z, but community college administrators must struggle to make a connection between the wisdom formalized in these texts and the very real issues they face. Rocky Young’s book offers an escape from this intellectual exercise and offers immediate help by making the leadership lessons come alive in a series of conversations. The reader is an active listener to rich conversations between an experienced successful mentor and an eager-to-learn mentee. This puts the reader in a most delightful place! There is no burden on the reader to dig for the lessons or to read chronologically. The thoughtful application-based lessons are based on a proven leader’s experiences and focus on creating strong and effective institutions in which students, faculty, and administrators can thrive! Rocky, kudos to you for sharing the wisdom you’ve acquired with the rest of us in such an enjoyable way!

At last a refreshing take on college leadership

Because this book is written in a conversational style, it beats the dry textbook approach usually used to discuss effective leadership. Rocky Young brings his experiences to life through the eyes of a young leader who is learning the ropes.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about leadership whether as a college administrator or in general.
