Escape
By Kelli
Very we'll written book. Would recommend to anyone who loves historical romances. If in life we could only be so free as a butterfly floating in the breeze. But for most of us our escape is in the pages of a good book not as a cabin boy on La Mourette!

Beautifully read! A Harlequin novel with Class!
By GATSBY KIN
Although I am not a fan of Harlequin novels, I am a loyal fan of John Castle. I sought out this novel specifically because he is the reader. The novel is set in Cornwall in the 1700's -- a bored, lonely Lady St. Columb flees city life with her two children and nanny to the country house where she and her husband honeymooned 7 years before. She stumbles upon the hideout of a French pirate who has been plundering her neighbors. She disguises herself as a cabin boy and joins in the fun, outwitting her stuffy neighbors and husband, falling in love with the scoundrel, and saving his life before he is hanged for his bad deeds.
Being from a blue-collar working class American family, the custom of having servants is foreign to me. I couldn't understand why this country house, which sat vacant for 7 years, was still staffed with a butler, groom, and gardener.
This novel is beautifully read by Mr. Castle, whose change in voice and inflection clearly lets you know which character is talking. He kindly refrains from talking in falsetto for Lady St. Columb! The graphic descriptions of the countryside, the languid pace, and the soliloquies make this an ideal companion for a summer vacation or trip to the shore. It's a refreshing change from the internet abbreviations and shorthand which are becoming standard in writing today. I loved this audiobook and plan to listen to it again and again.
This novel was made into a movie in about 1944. Why doesn't someone do a re-make of this? Antonio Banderas would be ideal for the pirate; Kate Winslet for Lady St. Columb. I'll stand in line for a ticket for this one!

How should firms decide whether and when to invest in new capital equipment, additions to their workforce, or the development of new products? Why have traditional economic models of investment failed to explain the behavior of investment spending in the United States and other countries? In this book, Avinash Dixit and Robert Pindyck provide the first detailed exposition of a new theoretical approach to the capital investment decisions of firms, stressing the irreversibility of most investment decisions, and the ongoing uncertainty of the economic environment in which these decisions are made. In so doing, they answer important questions about investment decisions and the behavior of investment spending.

This new approach to investment recognizes the option value of waiting for better (but never complete) information. It exploits an analogy with the theory of options in financial markets, which permits a much richer dynamic framework than was possible with the traditional theory of investment. The authors present the new theory in a clear and systematic way, and consolidate, synthesize, and extend the various strands of research that have come out of the theory. Their book shows the importance of the theory for understanding investment behavior of firms; develops the implications of this theory for industry dynamics and for government policy concerning investment; and shows how the theory can be applied to specific industries and to a wide variety of business problems.

Not For The Faint-Hearted
By Dr. David P. Newton
Investment Under Undertainty by Avinash Dixit and Robert Pindyck has been an important book in the 1990's because it introduced a relatively new subject to a new and eager audience when there was little else available outside of original research papers. Many of us are grateful to the authors for this introduction. However, newcomers should be aware that they omit large and crucial details of implementation [example: chapter 4, section 1H, pages 110-112 including the graphs on page 111: a newcomer will be lost; if you wait until the appendix to chapter 10, on numerical solution, then you may or may not note the printing errors]. The book is not for the faint-hearted beginner; even the simplest material, such as valuation of a perpetuity (see Corporate Finance by Brealey & Myers - very easy) occurs in a form which the beginner or skim-reading manager might not readily recognise (chapter 5, section 1A, pages 138-139); but then this book is not for them.
See also Real Options by Lenos Trigeorgis, who writes as if he keenly wants you to have fast access to his subject. For someone writing purely on the mathematical finance aspects, read anything by Paul Wilmott, who is clearly both clever and an exceptional educator

Fabulous Text on Real Options
By C. Ang
Let me start off by saying that this is an excellent book. The authors are very clear writers and the text is easy to follow. I think there are two types of readers that can benefit from reading this book. First, anyone that wants to learn about real options, especially the theory behind it should read this book. Dixit and Pindyck do a wonderful job explaining the different options embedded in real projects. Second, anyone that wants to learn how to use dynamic programming or contingent claims analysis to solve real options problems should read this book. In my opinion, Dixit and Pindyck have the best explanation of what to expect and how to solve the common specifications found in real options problems. They show problems that make use of different stochastic processes, such as geometric Brownian motions, mean reverting processes, or Poisson jump processes, and show how some of these can be solved analytically. Other books do not delve into a lot of detail on finding analytical solutions to the problems and merely assume that readers would be able to figure out their calculations. In addition, there is a short section (might even have been an appendix) that briefly discusses how numerical solutions work.

After reading a number of real options texts available in the market, I am glad that I still took the time to read this book. This is probably the most important real options book out there. Although I think every one interested in real options should read this, I think the ones that are particularly interested in more applied real options are better served by a book like Copeland and Antikarov's Real Options book and Copeland's Valuation book. These books are more geared towards solving valuation problems using binomial trees, which for practical purposes would most likely be the approach used (as most real world problems would probably need numerical solutions anyway).

State of the art -- but math is a required subject
By A Customer
Let me say that this is not a book for those looking for investment advice or get-rich-quick schemes. It is also not a book for those who think that an MBA and an HP12C are all you need to understand the basic theory behind investments, options, etc.
It is a mathematical subject...and to those with a good mathematical background, the book is remarkably well-organized and easy to understand. I found this book to be very helpful in my research.

Review
"'Sitwell's poetry has come in and out of fashion, but in the early 21st century it seems peculiarly relevant' The Times"

From the Publisher
Always witty and flamboyant, poet, critic, and biographer Dame Edith Sitwell was a champion of literary modernity. As a younger poet she challenged formal conventions with her own verses, such as the satirical romp Façade (1922). Later, her poetry sternly turned to class issues before she fell from fashion in the 1930s. After the Second World War, Sitwell enjoyed renewed public acclaim until her death in 1964. Her works include Clowns' Houses (1918), Gold Coast Customs (1929), The Song of the Cold (1948), Gardeners and Astronomers (1953), and The Outcasts (1962).

About the Author
Dame Edith Sitwell (1897-1964) poet, critic, and biographer, edited the lauded Wheels anthology of modern verse from 1916 to 1921 and become a Dame Commander, Order of the British Empire, in 1954.

Poetry of Historic Value
By Ben J Korgen
This is a big (445 page) quality paperback including poems important enough to earn their author the title Dame Edith Sitwell (equivalent to a Knighthood for males). Sitwell (1887-1964) is one of the greatest female poets in history, ranking as equal in impact to poets such as Emily Dickenson and Maya Angelou. She is a master of rhyming poetry in which the ending words of adjacent lines rhyme. I normally prefer that lines 2 and 4 rhyme, but once I got used to her approach, I learned to like it. Many times I would read to the end of a line and had difficulty imagining how she could get out of this pickle, meaning I could not think of a word that would rhyme with the word ending the previous line. She must have had a huge vocabulary, a great rhyming dictionary or both. The only negative I can think of involves her use of unusual words and the names of rarely known real persons or mythical characters that might throw stops and starts in for some readers.

Smooth as Silk

Amazing... beautiful. The type of flowing, perfect, and elusive poetry that resonates through your being, enriching and awakening you. I lucked into this book somewhat randomly; I will just say that Edith Sitwell is a poet and an intellect of a very high order.

Great Power Politics in Space!
By Roger J. Buffington
This is yet another installment in the "Ark Royal" space opera series. As readers of this series know, the basic assumption in this series is that certain human nations have utilized faster-than-light space travel to colonize inhabitable planets. Great Britain is one of the leading powers doing this, and the Royal Space Navy is much like the old Royal Navy circa 1900-1990 -- a leading force vital to the nation's survival.

In this novel the nation of India makes a bid to become one of the Great Powers by occupying a British-claimed star system and by effectively taking control of a planet inhabited by an intelligent species. The politics are much like the 1982 Falklands War -- Britain takes a sharp approach to perceived aggression. More would be telling.

I am not going to say that this is one of Nuttall's very best novels because it is relatively predictable and does not challenge the reader's imagination. It is really just Great Power politics writ large on an interstellar stage. But I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. This novel is, by the way, far superior to the prior installment in this series.

This series continues to show that it has potential, and it continues to entertain. RJB.

Patience proves the winning blow
By Mike Nemeth
"A Small Colonial War," by prolific writer Christopher Nuttall, continues the timeline that began with the Ark Royal and its battle with the alien race nicknamed the Tadpoles. At this point, John Naiser, captain of the small but deftly designed Warspite, has been brought into the resulting conflict between India and Great Britain. The Indians have long wanted to join the rest of the great powers and see an opportunity to gamble on increasing their interstellar profile by bloodying the nose of their former colonial masters. However, all is not as simple as they would hope. Despite the dangers of a pointless human war, the English don't back down. In a conflict roughly fashioned after the Falklands War, in which Argentina decides to forcibly take islands it claims as national land. This took place back in 1982, and the residents consider themselves British. Nuttall explores all the elements of the crisis but through a battle on a planet that has little to offer other than a poisonous atmosphere and small colony. The battles are well chronicled and the plot inventive. There's even a small love story between a marine and a young navy crew woman who had been exiled. The more I read Nuttall, the more I like it. And as long as he keeps turning out novels, I'll be buying and reading them.

A good conclusion to the Warspite story arc in the Ark Royal universe.
By Amazon Customer
As usual books from Christopher Nuttall are a fairly safe bet. Well, I guess it depends on your reading preferences of course but personally I quite like the books from this author and this one is no exception. Mr Nuttall often spins his stories from real world situations and events. Sometimes the link is rather direct and sometimes the link is somewhat stretched and quite embellished in the fictional parts of the book. In this book the influences from the Falklands war as well as the geopolitical state of the world in general (with quite a bit of fictional extrapolation into the future of course) are fairly obvious.

The book continues the story as it was left in the previous book in the series. If I should compare the two then this one is a more traditional military space opera. The story follows a fairly logical path given the events so far and there are really not many surprises along the way. The war breaks out of course and we get to follow it both in space and on the ground.

Warspite and its crew is of course present although they do not have such a central role as in the previous books. Nevertheless their contribution to the war effort is significant. Several other people from previous books are also back and, as usual, the characters and the story is good and well written.

The book was a pleasant read although it felt a bit more like a “standard” book in the genre than some of Mr Nuttall’s work which have been a bit more wow-inspiring. Still, it is quite high on the upper half on the scale though and the overall story of the book was definitely my cup of tea. The two warring factions do, naturally, have a few aces up their sleeves to prevent the action to be “just” a slug feast but, as I wrote, none of them were too surprising. The fact that there is a nice conclusion and a fairly happy ending, well not for the bad guys of course, is a plus as well. Some of Mr Nuttall’s books are having a somewhat dark tone and not so happy endings. This book is quite firmly in the other camp.

Something that annoys me a lot though are these idiot politicians that not only seems to be unable to collaborate but even starts wars when they continue their squabbling and pissing contents despite the fact that they have now realised that the humans are not alone in the universe and that there is a clear and present danger to the survival of the human race. Unfortunately that is probably a less fictional and more realistic part of the book though given the utter nincompoops that manages to get themselves elected over and over again in real life.

Bottom line, this is a very good book and I would not mind if Mr Nuttall continued with the stories in the Ark Royal universe. If nothing else I would really like to see one of those new Vanguard ships become reality and dish out some pain against whoever or whatever that got in their path.

Loved the book, but do not buy the kindle edition if you need the REAL page numbers there are none. When in class I have to use an equation just to find out what location I have to go to and by the time I figure it out my professor says to go to another page.

From Here to There: Alec Soth's America, by Geoff Dyer, Barry Schwabsky, Britt Salvesen, Siri Engberg, August Kleinzahler

From Here to There: Alec Soth's America is the first exhibition catalogue to feature the full spectrum of the work of Alec Soth, one of the most interesting voices in contemporary photography, whose compelling images of everyday America form powerful narrative vignettes. Featuring more than 100 of the artist's photographs made over the past 15 years, the book includes new critical essays by exhibition curator Siri Engberg, curator and art historian Britt Salvesen and critic Barry Schwabsky, which offer context on the artist's working process, the photo-historical tradition behind his practice and reflections on his latest series of works. Novelist Geoff Dyer's "Riverrun"--a meditation on Soth's series Sleeping by the Mississippi--and August Kleinzahler's poem "Sleeping It Off in Rapid City" contribute to the thoughtful exploration of this body of work. Also included in the publication is a 48-page artist's book by Soth titled The Loneliest Man in Missouri, a photographic essay with short, diaristic texts capturing the banality and ennui of middle America's suburban fringes, with their corporate office parks, strip clubs and chain restaurants. This full-color publication includes a complete exhibition history, bibliography and interview with the artist by Bartholomew Ryan.
Alec Soth was born in 1969 and raised in Minnesota, where he continues to live and work. He has received fellowships from the McKnight Foundation (1999, 2004) and Jerome Foundation (2001), was the recipient of the 2003 Santa Fe Prize for Photography and was short-listed for the highly prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Since then Soth has published Niagara (2006), Fashion Magazine (2007), Dog Days, Bogotá (2007) and The Last Days of W (2008). He is a member of Magnum Photos.

Savant!
By Duby Collins
Alec Soth has an effortless relationship to photography. He can pull images from anywhere, a kind of lens based savant. With photography being so crowded by genres, it is amazing to see someone create a spectrum of images without being conscripted to a single approach. He also has an uncanny ability to make visible the aberrations, and decline, of contemporary life. This publication is an excellent overview of his work.

So worth it
By T. Traina
Alec Soth is one of the brightest lights on the photography scene today. This book is an essential accompaniment to his work and sheds light on his thought process and direction. In addition to having lots of satisfying images from different bodies of work, it has thoughts, blog posts, and essays that really add value and entertain. It is a very contemporary take on the old monograph and immensely satisfying and fun.

The Trellis and the Vine, by Colin Marshall, Tony Payne

All Christian ministry is a mixture of trellis and vine.

There is vine work: the prayerful preaching and teaching of the word of God to see people converted and grow to maturity as disciples of Christ. Vine work is the Great Commission.

And there is trellis work: creating and maintaining the physical and organizational structures and programs that support vine work and its growth.

What’s the state of the trellis and the vine in your part of the world? Has trellis work taken over, as it has a habit of doing? Is the vine work being done by very few (perhaps only the pastor and only on Sundays)? And is the vine starting to wilt as a result?

The image of the trellis and the vine raises all the fundamental questions of Christian ministry:

* What is the vine for?
* How does the vine grow?
* How does the vine relate to my church?
* What is vine work and what is trellis work, and how can we tell the difference?
* What part do different people play in growing the vine?
* How can we get more people involved in vine work?

In The Trellis and the Vine, Colin Marshall and Tony Payne answer these urgent questions afresh. They dig back into the Bible’s view of Christian ministry, and argue that a major mind-shift is required if we are to fulfill the Great Commission of Christ, and see the vine flourish again.

Review
What Col and Tony have described here is exactly what I have been trying to do in my own life and in our congregation for years. According to this book, Christians are to be disciple-making disciples and pastors are to be trainers. Superb! This is the best book I've read on the nature of church ministry. --Mark Dever-Senior Pastor Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington D.C.

The Trellis and the Vine comes from a ministry so deeply committed to the recovery of biblical truth and the cause of the gospel. Its wisdom is invaluable. My advice: Keep a good stack on hand at all times, and put this book to good use. --R.Albert Mohler-President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky

Finally - Biblical Solutions To The Problem
By A. Morgan
Mark Dever has put this book in the top ten reads of 2009. He says "This is the best book I've read on the nature of church ministry."

Possibly.

My first impression was "Welcome to the conversation - a little late, but welcome nonetheless." What Marshall and Payne have written about here has been written about many, many times in the past 10 years or so, mainly by Emergent type folk.

A lot of their suggestions and conclusions have already been suggested and concluded in various books about church ministry. What Marshall and Payne do here is articulate it through a very biblical framework - more so than other books - as well as offer a concrete way of doing church differently, and that is what makes the book good.

Their fundamental point is simple - yet transformational if churches understood it - Disciple making should be the normal agenda and priority of every church AND every Christian disciple.

EVERY Christian's focus should be to BE a disciple and to MAKE disciples and Churches and pastors are meant to be facilitating that process.

This requires a shift of focus for churches and ministries. Early on in the book they give 11 such shifts that must take place:

1. From running programs to building people
2. From running events to training people
3. From using people to growing people (huge shift away from church `volunteers')
4. From filling gaps to training new workers
5. From solving problems to helping people make progress
6. From clinging to ordained ministry to developing team leadership
7. From Focusing on Church polity to forging ministry partnerships
8. From relying on training institutions to establishing local training
9. From focusing on immediate pressures to aiming for longterm expansion
10. From engaging in management to engaging in ministry
11. From seeking church growth to desiring gospel growth.

This cannot be achieved through superficial change, or implementing small groups. In fact, for Marshall and Payne the issue goes far deeper than just starting small groups. In fact, they argue that small groups are not the issue. The small groups need to be TRAINING groups; trained on how to read the Bible, pray with each other, work on spiritual growth. Without this drive and focus small groups are useless. Even preaching is not sufficient. Yes, you heard that right; Tony Payne and Colin Marshall say on pg 102 that, Sunday sermons are necessary but not sufficient. Preaching is ONE form of the ministry of the word - not THE form.

It is always coming back to the issue of ongoing, continuous training and discipling of ALL members of the church.

One of the most interesting discussions in the book revolves around calling. How does one know that they are called to ministry, The current model is to wait for someone to say `I feel called to ministry" and then the process begins.

This is not a biblical approach for the authors. They say that pastors and elders should be talent scouts. Scripture suggests that people are called and set apart by others (see Timothy). Pastors should be actively recruiting suitable people within their churches and challenging them to expend their lives for the work of the gospel.

They write:

"When we try and discern what it is that makes that role special [the one called out for ministry] in the New Testament it's not full time verses part time or paid verses unpaid. It's not that some belong to a special priestly class and others don't. It's not even that some are gifted and others aren't because all have gifts to contribute to the building of Christ's congregation. The key thing seems to be that some are set apart or recognized or chosen, because of their convictions, character and competency and entrusted with the responsibility under God for particular ministries."

Their summary proposals are:

Summary Propositions

1. Our goal is to make disciples
2. Churches tend towards institutionalism as sparks fly upwards
3. The heart of disciple-making is prayerful teaching
4. The goal of all ministry - not just one-to-one work - is to nurture disciples
5. To be a disciple is to be a disciple-maker
6. Disciple-makers need to be trained and equipped in conviction, character and competence
7. There is only one class of disciples, regardless of different roles or responsibilities
8. The Great Commission, and its disciple-making imperative, needs to drive fresh thinking about our Sunday meetings and the place of training in congregational life
9. Training almost always starts small and grows by multiplying workers
10. We need to challenge and recruit the next generation of pastors, teachers and evangelists

As I have said, while the main content and issues have been raised many times, what makes this book special is the solutions and suggested models which the authors put forward as a way forward. Too many books in the past have raised the problems but have never given substantial proposals or suggestions for a way forward. This book gives a biblically focused framework to allow you to work through the 11 required shifts thus becoming a church which trains disciples to be disciple-making disciples.

Radically biblical, but not quite the full picture
By John Dekker
The Trellis and the Vine has two core ideas. The first is that programs and organisational activity in a church (the "trellis") often get in the way of the real gospel work ("the vine"). The second is that real gospel work involves discipling others.

Now, I need to say at the outset that I am in fundamental agreement with these two emphases. Yet, it must be said that they are emphases only. It is very easy for a discipleship system to become a new trellis. The book's discussion on discipleship, however, is sufficiently nuanced to make it broader than just 1:1 discipling.

There were two things I particularly appreciated about the book. Firstly, Marshall and Payne make the point that the aim of Christian ministry is to "make disciples who make other disciples, to the glory of God," and not, for example, to get more people into small groups. This is very important for me to remember, since I would dearly love to see more people in my congregation join a small group. But that is only a means to an end, and not an end in itself.

The second thing I appreciated in this book was the argument in chapter 9 for investing time in more mature Christians so that they would join in the "vine work". Although a pastor may be naturally inclined to spend time with those who are struggling or those who need to hear the gospel, this book recommends an approach to ministry that trains others to do this - and suggests that the pastor focuses on those who need either the equipping or the encouragement to join you in the work. This is radical and controversial - yet it is the way Jesus carried out ministry, focusing on twelve disciples who would (at a later time) teach and disciple others. This is very different to the way many people view pastors and ministers - yet it is biblical.

This book is therefore one that stimulates thought and provokes disagreement. I was fine with the controversial point mentioned above, but there were two things that I didn't like about the book. In the first place, there is more to Christian ministry than discipleship, while in the second place, there is more to discipleship than just discipling individuals.

The book contains a truly hideous chart on page 101, which contrasts the "pastor as clergyman," "pastor as CEO," and "pastor as trainer." Naturally, the table is skewed towards making the reader approve of the third column and disapprove of the first two. It reminded me of the chart that D. A. Carson included in his Exegetical Fallacies (p. 109 of the 2nd edition). Apparently, the "pastor as trainer" approach sees Sunday as a "gathering of worshipping disciples with their Lord," while the "pastor as clergyman" model views Sunday as a "service of worship," and the "pastor as CEO" looks at it as an "attractional meeting." But surely it is possible to view it as both a "gathering of worshipping disciples with their Lord" and a "service of worship."

Perhaps it would be helpful at this point to draw on a modified version of Mark Driscoll's model of the pastor being prophet, priest and king. Following John Frame, Driscoll has suggested that some pastors are gifted as prophets ("thinkers"), others as priests ("feelers"), and still others as kings ("doers"). The point being, of course, is that we need all three of these aspects in a well-rounded ministry, and we need all three types serving as pastors. Maybe there is something similar going on with the three approaches that Marshall and Payne discuss:

Pastor as clergyman - prophet - focusing on public teaching
Pastor as trainer - priest - getting alongside people
Pastor as CEO - king - focus on organisation

Now, this book upholds the biblical and strategic importance of preaching, and views discipleship as being much bigger than meeting with individuals, but even with the widest possible definition, we can still see more to pastoring and teaching than this.

The second concern I have is that there is more to discipleship than discipling individuals. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus tells his disciples to "make disciples of all the nations," (NASB). Marshall and Payne take the line that "full time Christian ministry" is worthwhile for all people, and that there is a distinction between "gospel work" and "other work." They dismiss the idea that people in secular work are contributing in some way to the growth of God's kingdom, and criticise those who say "we shouldn't call people out of their secular careers; we should encourage them to stay where they are for God's glory" (p. 139). They then assert, "We don't make disciples of Jesus by building better bridges, but by prayerfully bringing the word of God to people."

There are two problems with this idea. The first is that it views the Great Commission as replacing (rather then supplementing or expanding) the creation mandate. The second is that it fails to realise how big discipling the nations really is. To take one example - Bible translation is an important component of discipling a nation. But Bible translation presupposes an entire discipline of linguistics. Would Marshall and Payne also say that "We don't make disciples of Jesus by building better verb paradigms"? Someone involved in linguistics is part of the progress of God's kingdom in the world. The Kingdom of God is bigger than individual disciples - it's about the reformation and renewal of families, churches, societies and nations.

In conclusion, this is a stimulating book, that may well prove to be one of the most influential books of 21st century Reformed evangelicalism.

Intentional gospel living
By Mark Lamprecht
The Trellis and the Vine focuses on doing the hard work of gospel living. That is, Christians giving of themselves through personal discipleship creating gospel growth.

The trellis represents the structure of a church including "management, finances, infrastructure, organization, governance." The vine represents gospel growth that grows around the trellis such as "planting, watering, fertilizing, and tending." (8) Very often trellis work can take over vine work since it tends to be easier see and to figure out what needs to be done. Vine work can be tougher to discern just what needs to be done and exactly how to do it.

This book tackles the aspect of vine work. The reader is moved from thinking of the church as an institution into a personal, intentional and relational understanding. The barriers of trellis thinking are broached and broken down without being dismissed. The authors attempt to get the readers thinking about vine work.

The authors explain the reasons for vine work and gives examples of how it can be done. They explain what vine work training might look like and encourage every church member to be involved. A chart of "gospel growth stages" is given using seven example people that one might find in their church. Those stages consist of outreach, follow-up, growth and training. (86-87) This is an example of one of the tools offered.

A particularly interesting chapter is Why Sunday sermons are necessary but not sufficient. The authors lay out two stereotypes of church ministry - Pastor as clergyman and Pastor as CEO. (98) Every person will probably be able to see some aspect of these stereotypes in their churches. The authors offer a another way which is the pastor as trainer. (99) This is the position the authors have been pressing in the book. The authors' position makes sense and is argued for biblically. This chapter could be a wake-up call for pastors and church members alike. Churches are challenged to evaluate a their programs, activities and structures against the gospel growth criteria presented. (108)

The book gives some very practical advice on growing a vine type of ministry in a church. The authors give examples of how it is done, where to start and some resources for training. Part of this is included in the three appendices including a helpful FAQ.

This book is a great ministry resources. It answers questions that pastoral staff may have as to how to get members intentionally involved each others lives for the gospel. Church members, both new and old, ask who are anxious to be involved in church life yet are unsure how will benefit. This book will guide them and help them ask the right questions of their pastor(s). Some long-time church members will be challenged if they are overly focused on particular programs, activities, etc. It may encroach on traditions for some though in a healthy, gospel-centered way.
