The narrator, Tessie, is the first one to see the "clouds rolling in,/ gray clouds, bunched and bulging under a purple sky," and she engineers a joyful rain dance with her three friends, Jackie-Joyce, Liz and Rosemary. The long-sought rain "freckles our feet, glazes our toes./ We turn in circles,/ glistening in our rain skin." According to Hesse's bio on the jacket flap, this text contains her initial exploration of motifs used first in her Newbery Medal-winning novel, Out of the Dust. With poetic and immediate language, she again captures the cleansing experience of rainfall after a long dry spell. Kindergarten-Grade 2-It's summer in the city and a three-week drought has made the heat nearly unbearable. Skinny little Tessie whispers her prayer, "Come on, rain!" longing for the shower that will break the heat and bring her mother's parched garden back to life. Seeking relief, the girl asks permission to wear her bathing suit, but an "Absolutely not" from Mamma keeps her looking for something to do. Like a blessing, she spies clouds off in the distance. Knowing that her mother will be easier to convince with help from a friend, Tessie runs off to her pal Jackie-Joyce's. "It's going to rain," she whispers. "Put on your suit and come straight over." Tessie returns home to fix her mother a much-needed iced tea, and with the perfect timing of a well-laid plan, Jackie-Joyce arrives along with the rain. As hoped, Mamma changes her mind about the suit and the girls run off to join two friends for a romp in the deliciously refreshing summer rain. To their daughters' delight, all four "...barelegged mammas dance down the steps..." and join in a spontaneous dance of relief and celebration. Muth's deceptively simple, muted watercolors capture the stifling city summer heat as well as a young girl's determination to keep it from ruining all her fun. My kids have really enjoyed this book. The art work is just superb and beautifully done. The story is also entertaining. I have also shared this book at school and the teachers have enjoyed the story.

About the Author
Ira Pohl is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. His research interests include artificial intelligence, the C and C++ programming languages, practical complexity problems, heuristic search methods, deductive algorithms, and educational and social issues. He originated error analysis in heuristic search methods and deductive algorithms. Professor Pohl was formerly a Mackay professor at University of California- Berkeley and a ZWO fellow in the Netherlands. This is the one

This is the best book I have ever read on C, one of the best textbooks I have ever read, and one of the best books (no exceptions) I have ever read.
I learned C from this book (second edition) in the author's (AK's) computational math class at UC Santa Cruz. I have since looked at many other C books (including K&R, "C By Example", "C for Programmers", and others) and this is hands-down the best. It provides a thorough, accessible and ANSI-compliant introduction to the language, uses many useful (nontrivial) examples from general computer science and computational math (sorting algorithms, matrix math), and I found it fun to read! In particular, I think it provides the most intuitive and useful introduction to pointers and pointer arithmatic anywere. The examples are well integrated into the flow of presentation, and it is well indexed (it is an excellent reference book). One of the reasons I like it so much as an example of good writing is that it serves double duty as a teaching tool and a reference work, and does both successfully.

Extraordinary Clarity

I had difficulty understanding C programmming in my years at college. You couldn't ask anyone for advice because people would contradict each other. I somehow got a job and wanted to make a career in software. My boss gave me this book to get started and I never looked back. I have read lots and lots of books in C programming. But 'A Book on C' stands out for it's clarity and it's graded presentation. If you solve the exercises (and they are doable) you will be a master. Mastering programming requires effort in the beginning, but once you understand the concepts you can cruise for the rest of your life. This is a great book to learn concepts. A lot of people recommend K&R's 'The C Programming Language'. There is no doubt that this is a great book. It is a masterpiece in brevity and it defines the language. But it is more of a reference book. To get good concepts and a more 'humane' starting book you need 'A Book on C'. You will never regret the purchase!

The most useful, thorough, and readable book on ANSI C.

I learned C with this book. I think it's not too bashful to say that it is the best C book on the planet. Here's why:

A. The authors spare no "idle talk" in getting their point across.

B. The material is very readable and very organized.
C. Programming dissections, computer science concepts, data structures, even operating system ideas are all contained in this wonderful, small (easy to carry) text.

A chapter describes the design methodology now required for joint replacement in the USA and EU countries. The remaining chapters provide a history of joint replacement, an evaluation of earlier and current devices and  description of the design rationale for some of the authors devices with which the authors are, of course, quite familiar.

Ainsworth studies the most prominent interest groups in the United States, looking at how they try to influence legislatures in the making of public policy and setting of government expenditures. You may already be familiar with the NAACP, as an example.

More generally, he even invokes some game theory to explain the actions that an interest group might take. This digression is fairly rudimentary, and you don't need any background in the subject to follow it.
