About the Author
Brooklyn-based painter Iris Scott is the only fine-art oil finger painter working today. She earned a BFA in Painting and a MA in Teaching, and studied painting in Florence. Finger Painting is the perfect touch!

“From the textured front cover to the last page, this beautifully written and illustrated book is the best of its kind. Detailed instructions and step by step pictures make finger painting a totally exciting adventure. The written directions are easy to follow and the results are quite achievable by amateurs and professionals. You can have your own Van Gogh or Monet style painting with your own creative touches. I have had the privilege of painting three of these examples from the book alongside Iris Scott in a live workshop setting, and the finished paintings are bright, Impressionistic treasures that are proudly hanging in my home. I love the squiggly lines, the chunky strokes, the dots and the dabs illustrated in the techniques section of the book. Her sky and trees are spectacular! She shares her techniques generously, and her book will become a “Bible” of artists who love Impressionism and vibrant colors. Cleanup is super easy using paper towels with the super water-based Holbien oil paint. I find that putting my gloved fingers into thick, rich paint is also therapeutic and peaceful.”

Color to the Max! Step-by-Step Amazing Book!

I absolutely love Iris Scott's artwork, and so when I heard she had a book coming out, I had to purchase it! The book is wonderful! Iris takes you by the hand, step by step for each painting, laying out all the supplies you need and bringing you to the finishing touches. I've done two paintings already and I'm hooked. If you want to unleash your colorful, creative self, it only takes a few hours from start to finish, and you'll have a work of art you can enjoy for many years to come. Holbein Aqua Duo are THE best paints to use, and so happy I bought them. Amazing color. You will love this book!

Fingerpainting Fun...and faster than brushes!

Iris does a great job of providing step by step instructions using pictures that you can look at while you are painting along with the book. She also provides insight into what sells in the marketplace and how to do it if you happen to want to make a happy buck doing what you love. I have attached a painting I have just completed from this book, the first one she walks you through. I can tell I will have to keep working at this method of painting to improve but it is a lot of fun :-)

Perhaps most interesting, Turton offers a provocative glimpse of the future of microelectronics. Here readers enter the strange realm where quantum theory prevails and where physical events contradict our intuitive perceptions. Turton shows how researchers are leaving the transistor far behind as they struggle to exploit quantum effects to create incredibly small and fast devices, such as "designer atoms" and the quantum dot. He concludes that the range of future possibilities are immense, including devices in which electrons behave not as particles but as waves, and computers in which there are no electrical signals, only beams of light.

The future of microelectronics

This book consists of two parts (its not formally laid out that way, it just naturally organizes into two parts). The first part is a qualitative introduction to integrated semiconductor electronics (with emphasis on transistor junctions). The second part focuses on solid state quantum physics with emphasis on optical as well as electrical properties. There is also a smattering of material on super conducting materials and some basic material about how a digital computer works. The author's intended audience is the high school student or first-year college student who wants to pursue a degree in the sciences. An alternate audience is the informed layman who wants to be up to date at a qualitative level with recent advances in electronics and future directions in research and development.
I believe the book is well written for the intended audience. Turner has an easy-to-read style, and he manages to explain things (generally) in a technically accurate way without the use of mathematics. Without the mathematical details this book is not what you'd expect in a design reference - and that's not what it's intended for. But it is an excellent book to read in advance of a rigorous quantitative class on the subject. I think it's much easier to understand physical phenomena in mathematical detail if one first obtains a qualitative "feel" for what's going on.
Turner opens his book with two short chapters on matter and the origin of conductivity. He spends the next few chapters describing p-n junctions, how they are used to make transistors, and issues that limit their size and speed. Along the way he shows how transistors are used in computers both in the fabrication of basic logic elements, and also in the venerable "flip-flop" memory cell. His descriptions are clear and concise, making liberal use of figures and diagrams so that the concepts can be grasped with no particular pre-existing skills in physics or electronics.
The explanation of present semiconductor physics sets the stage for later discussions about the motivation for semiconductor devices at the quantum level. He does a good job of illustrating the fact that quantum-dominated semiconductor devices will not simply be miniaturized versions of the devices populating current integrated circuits. The physics would not allow it. Rather, they will be unique devices that are designed and custom tailored using quantum theory from the ground up. The result will be new devices that have similar - though often dramatically different - operating characteristics, and that are orders of magnitude smaller than present devices, as well as faster.
In illustrating the classical and quantum semiconductor circuits, Turner does a nice job of laying out the basic ideas behind these devices. In qualitative prose, he explains the exclusion principle, how it applies to fermions, and how the exclusion principle in conjunction with quantized energy states results in many of the phenomena that we observe in semiconductor devices. Turner's description of the optical properties of semiconductors flows naturally from earlier discussions. He describes the basic ideas behind a laser, though in this regard I found the descriptions somewhat lacking. Other interesting groundwork is provided in his descriptions of tunneling and Compton pairs (which are involved in super conducting).
A nice feature is the glossary of terms, along with a nice list of further reading material and a good index. The book is also well illustrated throughout, with figures that add considerably to one's level of understanding. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in a qualitative introduction to solid-state physics, electronics, or semiconductor optics. I found it enjoyable to read and rich in the sort of qualitative imagery and description that makes learning so much more enjoyable.

Turton has done a wonderful job descibing the technicalities of today's computer/electronic technology. His descriptions allow the lay-person to understand the current technology and to understand where the future is taking us - probably to the Quantum Dot - and other devices. I highly reccomend it for anyone interested in the nanotechnology field as a primer

Essential reading for aspirant masters at visual thinking and communication

The best I've seen yet. This wide-ranging book, in addition to what most other books cover, adds two nifty frameworks that, between them capture the essence of what took me years of experience to master, Firstly, while most other books focus on design execution, Berinato adds the dimension of contextual awareness as an essential element of a good chart, and devotes considerable space to elaborating how to create contextually aware charts. Secondly,his "Four types" framework covers both data driven and conceptual charts, which are not usually treated as related. It also makes a clear distinction between exploratory and explanatory charts, emphasizing how their requirements differ, a distinction which usually goes unappreciated. Hence it unifies, expands and at the same time differentiates the topic of charts in a remarkably useful way.

"Good Charts" has the clarity of thinking that makes it points clearly and simply, without clutter and without oversimplifying - the signature of a master. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Reference and Resource!

Years ago in a development program I was asked to draw something that "represented me." Drawing upon all of my visual, artistic and creative skills ... I drew a single vertical line down the center of the flip chart page. If you can relate, then this book is for you. To be clear, this is not a beginner's guide, per se; many of the example visualizations in the book are quite sophisticated, although the author's use of them to illustrate design points are easy to understand and implement. The beauty of this book is in the author's immensely readable writing style, the system of thinking visually to build better charts that he lays out in the book, and the use of many (many!) examples to make his points. On p. 12 the author states "I hope this book will become a well-worn, dog-eared companion." After just a few weeks my copy is already in that state.

This was our Analyst Community's Q3 Book Club selection, and it was a huge hit! We're even carrying the conversation into Q4 to focus on a few more of the chapters, and developing monthly 1-hour workshops so folks can practice the techniques. It's well written and contains excellent suggestions on how to effectively visualize data.

one man's bold sociological experiment

Author Peter Lovenheim does good deeds. He is a driving force that brings neighbors together in a typical isolating suburban community. He celebrates the jobs of his mailman and newspaper deliveryman. Lovenheim honors senior citizens and busy American families by spending time in their homes, peppering them with questions, and portraying them all in a bright light.

In an era of media violence, a book about helping one's neighbors is a reprieve. It will inspire readers to befriend strangers in their own neighborhoods. Altogether, it is a unique, refreshing, and tender book.

It Works For Us!

Our neighborhood in a sleepy Denver suburb (Arvada) is a better place because of Peter Lovenheim's amazing book "In the Neighborhood". Since a group of us read Peter's book, we had 50 neighbors come together at the park to meet and become better neighbors. Since then, we opened a neighborhood blog [...] which has had over 400 hits in just 3 months.

As Peter says, the strength of any neighboring effort is in connections. Since our first park event, we've brought meals to Jeniffer and Clancy for the birth of their new baby girl Lila, hosted Poker Nights, helped a child injured in a car accident and posted pictures of the rebuilding of a house that burned down (and a life was lost) last year.

Our neighborhood has come together in tangible ways. Our next event will be "Soup on Halloween" a progressive experience, where 4 neighbors will host "Soup Stops" for families as they walk around on Halloween.

Peter's book has been inspiring, I first read about it on Google News and have been inspired by the real life stories he tells. We think we are doing the same one person at a time. Thank you Peter for your boldness in writing on this theme that many long for but few know where to start.

A book that speaks about how we to live among ourseves

Reminds me of all the times I've walked down a street and wondered about who's in there. And they are us. Woven in Mr. Lovenheim's descriptions of his neighbors is how we, as selves and families, age and adapt to the present. It's a kindly warning: fruitful life opportunities, perhaps only to be articulated later, in someone else's musings, can be lost. It made me wonder: What do I do to know anyone well? And how do I let other people know me? It is a kind book that leaves questions, and gently encourages us towards intimacy in our own lives. I loved the book.

No beautiful pictures

This is an excellent book on animal breeding. However, contrary to a previous review, it does not have any pictures at all! It has excellent charts and tables that illustrate points in the book. I just wanted to clarify this point.

Excellent text will help you better understand any kind of selective animal breeding

This book was recommended to me by a college professor who teaches horse breeding genetics. She said that although the book is not specifically about horses, she finds the information in it to be more correct than many texts that are.
