Good Book

This was a good read and a good conclusion to the Odyssey Block.

The book picks up right where Torment left off - Chainer is dead and Cabal City is in ruins. Kamahl has finally come to wield the Mirari, however his designs for it are not necesarily good ones. He disguises his designs for power by deluding himself into believing that he is the one to unite his people, since he wields the Mirari. As the book progresses however, it becomes clear that Kamahl has been driven practically insane by the power of the artifact and his desire for control. Will he return to his senses? You will have to read to find out! Meanwhile, Laquatus, foiled again by Empress Llawan in his attempts to get the Mirari for his own personal benefit, remains stuck in his portal prison. That is, until one day, when he discovers one of the infamous sub-continent tunnels which leads to his escape. With Laquatus up to his old tricks again, the continent is once again in for a vicious cycle of lies, false alliances and deception.

While the book is good and the plot intriguing, it does have its dull and confusing moments. Therefore, I have to rate it only four stars. However this was an excellent conclusion to the Odyssey Block and, as always, leaves us wondering, "What next?"

Not as interesting as Chainer's Torment

The book gives and ending to the Odyssey Cycle. It does its job dutifully, and brings the whole story to full circle. However, it doesn't impress me particularly with the story nor the writing. This is not to say that it is bad, but it is not excellent either (hence the 3 stars). The ending is again kind of sloopy (like Chainer's Torment), and doesn't really explain what happens next for Kahmahl or Jeska. I guess it will have to continue in Onslaught.

An Excellent Finish

Way back in the days of the Odyssey block (hard to believe it's been so long) I got this book in a fat pack I'd bought. The cards were alright, I still use the spindown counter frequently, and I read through the player's guide dreaming I'd one day have some of the cards listed in it. But what pulled me in was this book. It was the first Magic book I'd ever read and I'd picked it up more as a way of killing time when I had to go to my brother's little league games.

After the first chapter or two though, I simply could not put the book down. I still think it's one of the better Magic books I've read. I later got Chainer's Torment in the hopes that it might clear up some of the confusion I had by coming into the book so late, but I found that book to be a disappointment. McDermott offers plenty of wit in his characters and makes them work well with one another and weaves a good tale. This was my first and still is probably my favorite Magic book I've read to date, the other being Moons of Mirrodin, which also just happened to be written by McDermott as well. It's a pity that, as far as I can tell, he's only written two books for the Magic series.

It's been so long that I just barely remember the details, but needless to say it's one of the few books that I had which I wore out so much by reading it as much as I did.

If you're a Magic fan, particularly of the books, I'd recommend giving this book a shot.

About the Author

Scott Freeman

Scott Freeman received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. His current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning and he recently published two papers on his work: (1) how active learning and peer teaching techniques increase student learning and improve performance in introductory biology (Freeman, S., E. O’Connor, J.W. Parks, M. Cunningham, D. Hurley, D. Haak, C. Dirks, and M.P. Wenderoth. 2007. Prescribed active learning increases performance in introductory biology. CBE—Life Sciences Education 6: 132-139.); and (2) how the levels of exam questions vary among introductory biology courses, standardized post-graduate entrance exams, and professional school courses (Zheng, A.Y., J.K. Lawhorn, T. Lumley, and S. Freeman. 2007. Applications of Bloom’s Taxonomy Debunks the “MCAT Myth.” Science  25 January 2008: 414—415).

 

Kim Quillin

Illustrator, Kim Quillin, combines expertise in biology and information design to create lucid visual representations of biological principles. She received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley (as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow), and has taught undergraduate biology at both schools. Students and instructors alike have praised Kim’s illustration programs for Biological Science, as well as Biology: A Guide to the Natural World, by David Krogh, and Biology: Science for Life, by Colleen Belk and Virginia Borden, for their success at the visual communication of biology. Excellent Book (but don't buy the accompanying study guide)

I just took BIO 180 at the University of Washington for which this book was required. I have to say that although this was an expensive book, it is more than worth the money dropped. You can use it for all of the introductory Biology courses (180, 200, 220) and it's also a great book for satisfying personal curiosities about other topics in biology.

The best part about this book is that it is impeccably organized and thorough. You will not get lost in dry, confusing blocks of text and there are chapter summaries which are great to include in your notes. I used the book extensively for the course that I took. As I continue through the series I will definitely hold onto this book.

One quick note: the study guide is virtually a repetition of the chapter summaries and was not that helpful, so don't waste money on that. :o)

Used it for Introductory Biology - UW Seattle

Great book. Really enjoyed it. For a science textbook, it's not that "word-y." I actually had the Professor who is the author, and how he teaches is kind of like what this book does: it seeks to clarify, not muddle; brevity and concise for maximum understanding. Also has great illustrations. I wouldn't completely rely on only this textbook to learn everything about Biology, but this is a great start.

Also for future UW students: No, I did not have to buy MasteringBiology. That was completely optional. Clickers were more important than MasteringBiology. MasteringBiology is not Alex/Connect Plus.

I love this text!

I've only been using this book for 2 weeks and I already enjoy it, which is a big thing to say for a textbook. The last general bio book I had was full of information that drowned out the overall point each section within the chapter was trying to bring. It was full of biochem and technical talk that wasn't needed for this level of class.

Freeman's book brings a refreshing approach to writing about biology. Each chapter and section within each chapter, provides the student with the "meat and bones" of what they need to know. It's not hard to comprehend the take home message and to see how each little component adds up to make a larger component. This book has made me love biology again and understand why I returned to school. Good job Scott Freeman!

About the Author
Ed Zalisko is a professor in the biology department at Blackburn College, Carlinville, IL. He received his Ph.D. in zoology from Washington State University and an MA and BA in zoology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL. He has taught courses in comparative anatomy, human anatomy and physiology, developmental biology, cell biology, zoology, and human reproductive biology.

Ken Kardong is a professor in the zoology department at Washington State University, Pullman, WA.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and his MS and BA from the University of Washington.  In addition to teaching comparative anatomy and evolution, Ken is also involved in developing software programs for use in the laboratory sections of these courses.

Great lab manual!

I used this guide in my Comp. Vertebrate Anatomy lab, and it was extremely helpful! The diagrams are well put together and allow you to identify structures easily. It would have been nice to have a manual with actual pictures instead of drawings, but the drawings in this are fantastic.

I would recommend this to anyone who writes and self-edits

Flawlessly well-written, as one would expect, I found this book simple to follow, brimming with clear examples and solid on grammar/spelling/punctuation usage. I will be dipping into it much as I write and edit and have already implemented a style guide based on its template. There are many suggested ways of copy-editing, proofreading — you get to test-drive which methods suits you — with little pieces from experienced editors on how they approach their work. I would recommend this to anyone who writes and self-edits, from indie authors such as me to bloggers. This book is very practical and gets you up to speed fast.

Middle of the Road

I had to take a proofreading test for a job interview, so I thought this book might help me brush up on my proofreading skills. I didn't really like the general information, I found the advice to be very obvious and I feel like you could get that information for free on the internet. However, I did find the exercises to be somewhat helpful. Dedicating an entire exercise to "there, their, and they're" may not have been that constructive, but some of the other exercises did help me pay greater attention to detail for the test.

Darn it, it is slipping into yuck

I have read through 5 Frostborn books as of this review. This was the most predictable of the bunch. So, in addition to the grammar errors of this series the plot I think is the weakest of books 1-5. I will still continue to read the series, I will still have to re-read entire paragraphs because clarity is not his strong suit, and hope that things improve.

Good story with the same failing as the Omnibus set I read earlier: no editing. Extra words, missing words, and incorrect words abound. Multiple errors on almost every page. Someone PLEASE get this author an editor!

Worth a read

This is the fourth book of a fifteen book series. If you're like me, you enjoy a long series more than a stand-alone novel or trilogy - IF it's well-written and original. This one is quite different; it's not often readers have an opportunity to discover interesting new worlds and entirely unique races, and there are many creative, unheard-of races in this series. I'd highly recommend the Frostborn series to fans of the various Forgotten Realms sagas or any other fantasy series.

Problems:

1 - Lack of editing. We've all been there. You're losing yourself in a great story, forgetting about reality for a little while, then BAM! There's a typo, extra word, or missing word to ruin the flow, and as you do an involuntary double take the real world comes crashing back. I've definitely seen much worse, but the number of errors throughout this series is still a shame. If the author would just read over it once, or send it to a beta reader before publishing, his readers would have a much more enjoyable experience.

2 - Repetition. Summarizing each main character's back story in every novel seems unnecessary; people aren't going to start from book ten and go backwards. Also, having characters explain a situation, then restate it multiple times is annoying.

3 - As others have pointed out, the hero Ridmark Arban is overused. There's a whole group of colorful main characters here, but no matter how chaotic the fighting may become, it's usually Ridmark who strikes down a major enemy or accomplishes something significant.

PRAISE:

1 - Originality! I'm 35 years old and have been an avid reader all my life, but I've never heard of at least half the races he introduces in this series. Bravo, Moeller! Even the races we've seen before are so different in this story, they easily hold the reader's attention.

2 - Character development. As the Frostborn series progresses, so do many characters' personalities. Moeller allows readers access to their inner thoughts, feelings, and struggles so we can watch them grow. Though the repetition can be frustrating at times, I still appreciate those details and glimpses.

3 - Length of series. Some reviewers have said the series is dragging on too much. Personally, I enjoy the stalling and side adventures. When I find a good series, I always hate reaching the end. Moeller keeps his characters busy with unique, entertaining dilemmas and journeys. I applaud his expertise in stretching things out while keeping his readers interested.

A really good read. Very personal.

What I really liked about this book is that it not a "how to..." book at all, but rather it is very personal memoir of all of Hageseth's experiences starting five years ago from a naïve "What's this marijuana thing?" to becoming of the most successful growers/purveyors in Colorado today. For this reason, this memoir is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to learn a little more about this new frontier of medical/recreational drugs. Particularly helpful to me was Hageseth's candor with respect to his multiple failures until he got it right, helping me to appreciate how seemingly invisible and often subtle variables are inevitable and unavoidable, and not because my particular overtures were "jinked." In addition to being valuable to folks contemplating getting into the business, this memoir is a really GOOD READ for anyone interested in piercing the purple haze of this as yet
uncharted terrain.

Big Weed offers an amazing view, from the inside, of what is going on in the MJ business. The author has seen it all. This book is a backstage pass to the ins and outs of the "Business" of legalized pot.
I will never listen to a news story the same.
I "highly" (no pun intended) recommend this book. Easy read, easy to follow along.
Change your view of the pot industry and read this book.

absolutely have the best product on the market in Colorado and this book ...

I had to chance to do contract work for this company and Green Man, under the leadership of Chris & co, absolutely have the best product on the market in Colorado and this book shows you why. This is great look inside the development of a pioneering company in a new industry and as far as I know, the only publication on the market that takes you inside. A must buy for anyone who is curious about the beginning of the Colorado cannabis industry.
