Clear presentation of the mathematics behind computer graphics

This old book is a very good programming language-independent guide to the mathematics necessary for the implementation of computer graphics. I still consult my copy regularly even now, 14 years after I first purchased it. Chapter one, on computer graphics basics in general, talks about very old hardware technology, and can largely be skipped. Who really needs to know about dot matrix printers and electrostatic plotters these days? Chapter 2 begins the meat of the book, where the 2D matrix transformations of scaling, translation, rotation, and reflection are introduced. Next the author shows how to combine these matrices to perform these operations in series. These ideas are extended to 3D in chapter 3. The latter part of chapter 3 might be of particular interest to students of computer vision, since it does an exceptional job of explaining the mathematics of perspective, vanishing points, projection, and reconstruction of 3D images that so many computer vision books tend to gloss over. Chapters 4 through 6 is where the book is truly excellent, in that it gives the clearest presentation of parametric curves, B-splines, and Bezier curves I have ever seen, and then extends these ideas to full-fledged 3D objects and surfaces. Plenty of diagrams and equations are shown throughout the book, but code implementations are left to the reader. If you are interested in more modern techniques such as quaternions, there is none of that here due to the age of the book. This same author has an entirely separate book that is also excellent, "Procedural Elements of Computer Graphics", for the less mathematical algorithmic portions of computer graphics. One of the best books I've read.

This was one of the coolest technology books I've read, since I loved the topic and it was well written and explained. Please buy it if you want to know the theory behind computer graphics (like how the videocard and monitor interact to draw pixils on the screen and polygons as well) otherwise save your money if you think this will help you MAKE computer graphics. This book is all interesting theory and nothing to do with actually making the graphics themselves, unless you plan on doing it with a 1970's computer or writing your own graphics card bios or driver (or maybe a rewrite of directx?)

Mathematical Elements for Computer Graphics

While written over 24 years ago, I was hoping this book would give me an understanding of the mathematical basis (if not the current state-of-the art;) ) of computer graphics. Despite (arguable to many) years of university math courses, I found this volume merely humbling, rather than enlightening. If you are more comfortable with fairly advanced mathematical notation and concepts than most, especially relative to geometry, you may find this book useful. I found it only marginally useful -- primarilly as a reference to some concepts I had previously been exposed. Best of luck.

Useful but not worth full price

So far I'm about 50% of the way through the book. Most of the content is stuff that you probably already know if you have read or watched reviews online already, but there are a few things I didn't know and a few things I had known but like having them organized in a nice way. My biggest problem with this book is that, since the author is not a native English speaker, there are *many* spelling and grammar mistakes that any spelling and grammar checker should have caught. The writing is good enough to understand the points he is making, but the mistakes make it hard to skim the text, which is probably how you are going to want to read the book. If I were paying full price for this book, I would expect the author to pay for an editor to correct those mistakes.

It does qualify as a guide, but it is not Ultimate...

I thought this would be indeed as the title suggests, an Ultimate guide. In that regards it falls far short. Like aiming for the sun and hitting the moon. It does have a lot of worthwhile information, but like Alex herself, it is not all that grand. I would wager about at least one third of the Easter Eggs do not work. Would have liked useful information, and tips on getting Alexa to actually hear what is being spoken. Much of the guide was just the Author telling us how wonderful Alexa is. I would have liked to know why on many skills , after you enable then, Alexa rather cannot find them, or replies the skill is not enabled. Yet try and enable it again , and it tells you it is already enabled. Would love to have that version of the guide, more so than what is in this guide......

Not Happy with Amazon

I spent the money for the Alexa Tap. I'm satisfied with it but would like to use it for things other than playing Pandora.I ordered this book, Advertised for FREE. Found out it's NOT free, really. You can read it. Thought I would keep it for reference. NOPE, that costs '99. I don't mind paying the .99 but why tell me it's FREE? Seems Amazon is turning another corner of their development. If you don't pay the Membership fee, you just don't matter. I'm starting to find other sites and using Amazon for a price reference. Amazon is creating a competitive marketplace.Just not customer friendly like it used to be. Too bad for consumers.

Great Resource, but not a stand alone reading program.

I waited to write this review until I had used this book for a while with more than one of my children. I have been using this book for three years, with three different children (now 2nd, 1st, and kindergarten). With all of my children I DID NOT use this resource to teach the letter sounds. I found Leap Frog's Letter Factory to be an effective tool before I discovered this book and chose to stick with it for all of my children. So, we picked up AFTER letter sounds in all instances. I am going to outline what I used this book for and how I found it helpful.I will point out that all of my kids are reading ABOVE grade level (1-2 years ahead of what is recommended).

This book is a great scope and sequence for what phonics rules to teach and in what order. We basically went through each lesson in order. With my oldest I completed the book around the latter part of first grade. My younger children are not quite as far along as he was at the end of kindergarten, so it may take longer. I found the repetitiveness to be an asset. I found the book easy to navigate and it was easy to flip back to previous lessons and do quick reviews.

I actually LOVE that the book has no flashy colors or pictures. This is INTENTIONAL. In schools children are taught to use picture clues to figure out words. I taught in public school for three years and have a MaEd. and I can tell you THIS IS NOT READING. It is a common practice and I NEVER saw it help a child, other than to encourage guessing. In The Ordinary Parent's Guide the child can only "read" by focusing on the words...right from the start.

Yes, the words are small, but I found my kids had no problem quickly learning which words were for them and which were for me. I placed a simple piece of paper under what they needed to read and that was that. Font and small type was a non issue for us. The kids adapted almost right away.

I would suggest, however, NOT using this as your entire reading curriculum. It was the MAIN part of our reading, but in and of itself it was dry and boring...effective yes, exciting NO, NO, and NO. So, we moved through our lessons, while I enriched reading time with exciting read alouds (this is where I asked reading questions about character, setting, plot...etc.) Until the students are reading independently AND fluently it is useless to ask them comprehension questions about their own reading, so I do this through read alouds (decoding words at the early ages it quite enough).

Once the kids started reading well enough, I began to check out easy readers and Bob Books from the library and moving through those in addition to their regular lessons. The kids enjoyed reading "real books" rather than just the reading lessons. I found Scholastic's book finder to be an invaluable resource for checking out books on each child's level, while gradually increasing difficulty.

I also introduced more sight words than The Ordinary Parent's Guide. I found when checking out books from the library or reading Bob Books (such great readers that build in level gradually) they needed to be familiar with more sight words earlier than they are presented in this book. I simply couldn't wait until they were covered, so we made a word wall and did many earlier.

So, there you have it. This book it not perfect, but is a great resource and a great backbone to any reading program. In my case, this is evidenced by three early reading normal kids. I previewed the 100 easy lessons book, but found it didn't cover enough and I firmly believe it takes more than 100 phonics lessons to have a fluent reader (just my personal/professional opinion). The Ordinary Parent's Guide has been the best, most thorough scope and sequence I've seen....just add some fluff to your reading time to keep kids engaged. Honestly, there is NO single magical resource that does EVERYTHING a reading program needs to do...common sense, adjusting, and listening to your kids is necessary no matter what is chosen. Not For Everyone

I bought this book and my daughter did not enjoy or respond to the method used to teach reading outlined within. Others might be more receptive, however for is it was a struggle from Day One, and quickly became an unhappy chore, complete with balking and arguments.

I put the book aside, eventually selling it for close to what I paid - thankfully, since it was still in perfect condition (we did not even make it through the vowels). Soon after, my daughter taught herself to read, and now reads at or above grade level.

If you give it a fair chance and it isn't working, do not blame yourself or your child.

Nice Book by the creator of Fu Manchu

No, Fu Manchu does not show up in this book, but there is an evil mastermind who the Chinese Doctor would probably respect (as he uses some of Fu's methods), with his own complex scheme for world conquest, and a unique Weapon of Mass Destruction. And there are some good guys to oppose him. This novel could probably be adapted into an action film.

Decent pot-boiler

Sax Rohmer created the famous Fu Manchu series. His breathless purple prose about the Yellow Peril tapped into the fear, prejudices, and stereotypes of his era, so that very little else was really needed to create an exciting story. And, since each book, was one in a series, crisp endings didn't matter all that much. Each story was expected to pave the way for the next.

So, if you strip off the racial stereotypes and prejudices, there wasn't really much left to distinguish the story. That becomes apparent in this book. It recycles the evil super-scientist bent on world domination (destruction in this case), the sweet young thing dragged, against her will, into the plot, and dashing good guys who save the world with just moments to spare. You know, the usual.

If shallow characters, unexplained situations, and abrupt endings suit your idea of a story, have a blast. This is pulp fiction at its pulpiest, with all the good and bad that implies.

Not one of his better books.

Amazon service was excellent. However, this book is not one of the better Sax Rohmer books in my opinion. (Maybe that is why it is moderately rare!)

VERY easy to read; a great intro for novices

Being a beginner in the world of DOE (with minimal statistics training), this book was TRULY a godsend. Very easy to understand-- I feel I was able to get a nice grasp of the concepts I'd heard about so often before but could never quite nail down. I did a 2-day training at SAS on DOE and this little book blew that away. Lots of examples and practice problems to get some experience under my belt.

Some people are critical because they say it's "oversimplified"... but come on guys, read the title of the book! It is not for hardcore math guys. It is for novices and practical-minded folk who need to get a fast, easy intro.

Finished it in 2 easy afternoons and now I feel comfortable to move on to more detailed/ math oriented texts to learn all the nuances of DOE. Highly, highly recommended for novices. Looking forward to the other books written by these very talented authors!

A Truly Brief Introduction to DOE

The book is a very brief introduction to DOE. I had read other reviews that stated that it was only a very brief intro to DOE. My thoughts when purchasing the book was that would be what I needed since I had not previously worked with statistical experimental design. Having now gone more than half way through the book, I found that I could not follow the solutions without the aid of other more detailed statistical design of experiments texts. If you are truly a beginner, I suggest using this book while referring to Design & Analysis of Experiments by Douglas Montgomery. In this manner while using a book similar to Montgoemery's 5th or later edition as a reference, the "DOE Simplified" text serves as a pacer book to hurry you through an intro to DOE. It certainly helped me become much more interested in pursuing DOE and thus order a number of additional books of which Montgomery's was one of seven that I have recently purchased from Amazon. Although I am digressing, my rating of Montgoemry's 5th Edition is FANTASTIC!!!!! DOE Simplified.... good summary as long as you have reference material.

A Reasonable Quick Survey

DOE Simplified is perhaps overly simplified. The author tries to pack ANOVA, factorial experimentation, use of blocking and fold overs, and response-surface methodology inside 200 pages. The attempt is admirable, but the book would be hard for a beginner to fully understand due to information gaps, especially on why the techniques work (at least on an intuitive level). The person who would benefit most is that person needing a refresher after a being away from DOE for some time.
