Publishing funnies.

A handsome selection of Posy Simmonds cartoons that originally appeared in the weekly book review supplement of the London Guardian. They all relate to literature and especially publishing, either as strips or whole page cartoons. My favorites are the strips for Ask Doctor Derek, where a handsome young MD solves medical (literary) problems like a bout of plagiarism, the incredibly contagious writers clich� or dreadful critics mauling syndrome. Simmonds drawing style is typically English, slightly soft and with a caricature edge as opposed to the slick graphic style of Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury for instance.
Posy has a wicked sense of humor, especially when she is exposing the phonies of the English publishing establishment. A bull's-eye every time and great fun, too.

Poignant

I absolutely adored this story - told in two timelines as we follow Alice as she arrives at Fiercombe Manor and Elizabeth Stanton, a previous resident who is somewhat enigmatic, this gripped me from the start and is written so beautifully and with such great poignancy that it stayed with me long after I had finished it. The two main characters are appealing and genuinely fascinating, separated as they are by years but both living strangely parallel lives. It really was a most terrific read and I loved every minute of it.

This will certainly be going on my Highly Recommended list for people who adore a good heartfelt fictional story with a beautiful historical flavour.

I was lucky enough to recently visit the inspiration behind the story, Owlpen Manor in Gloucestershire and you can read all about that here. Again I would encourage anyone who can to visit there themselves - beautiful and peaceful I had the best time. Links to the Owlpen website can be found in the article.

Rich in atmosphere

There's something so comforting about a gothic mystery, that makes you feel like curling up by the fire on a wild night. Fans of Kate Morton or The Little Stranger will enjoy this atmospheric story set in a crumbling Elizabethan manor house in 1930s rural England. Alice Eveleigh is a young woman who has expecting a child after a brief, disastrous relationship. Her mother sends her away to stay at remote Fiercombe Manor until she has the baby.

When Alice arrives at the Manor, she learns about Elizabeth Stanton, who lived there and was married to the baronet a generation earlier. No one seems to know what happened to Elizabeth, or if they do, they don't want to talk about it. Alice stumbles onto Elizabeth's diary and starts to gradually piece together the story of what happened to her.

Can I just say at this point that "The Girl in the Photograph" is a terrible title for this book? For starters, it doesn't sound like it's going to be about someone from the 19th century. Nor is Elizabeth a girl, but if the title refers to her daughter that is even more misleading because she's not the one that Alice is interested in. And lastly, Alice spends most of the book being fascinated by Elizabeth without ever seeing a photograph of her at all. The US edition is titled "Fiercombe Manor", which is better, though still not very appealing.

Putting that little rant aside, I did enjoy this book - it has a real atmosphere about it, a little creepy, a little intriguing. The pace is quite slow and I got a little annoyed by the way Alice was fond of telling us things like "I could never have imagined how much my life was about to change" - just get on with the story, please! But for the most part the author is in complete control of how much she wants us to be able to work out at any given time and the revelations unfold with impeccable timing.

In the acknowledgements section at the very end of the book, the author explains that she based the fictional Fiercombe Manor on the real Owlpen Manor in Gloucestershire. If you look online there are a number of photographs of Owlpen Manor and you may like to look them up before reading the book.

‘The Girl in the Photograph’ by Kate Riordan began with great promise but I thought the pace a little bit too slow and that it wound up fizzling out a bit towards the end. The story is told by two women, Alice in 1933 and Elizabeth in 1898, who both live at the Gothic and secluded English country estate, Firecombe Manor. When Alice became pregnant to her married boyfriend her mother sent her away to stay with her childhood friend, Edith Jelphs, who works as a maid at Firecomb Manor.

Alice soon discovers Elizabeth’s old diaries and begins a quest to discover all of the mysteries that Firecombe Manor holds. Even though Edith worked for Elizabeth she is reluctant to speak about the past, so Alice is left to do most of the investigating on her own, with a bit of help from a local historian.

I particularly enjoyed the chapters of ‘The Girl in the Photograph’ which were told from Elizabeth’s perspective. They had a real mysterious and Gothic feel to them and I was really interested to find out what happened to her and her children. I did feel though that Alice’s chapters dragged on a bit and that the ending was rather anticlimactic, but these are all very likely just a matter of my own personal preferences. The story was well written and the mysteries are subtly, although slowly, revealed in a way that will appeal to readers who enjoy Gothic mysteries.

The Girl in the Photograph was published in the USA under the title Firecombe Manor.

The 'Gift of Miracles' in Action

In his recently published book, THE SUPERNATURAL POWER OF A TRANSFORMED MIND: ACCESS TO A LIFE OF MIRACLES (hereafter, SPTM), Bill Johnson picks up where Oral Roberts's thirteen-week devotional, A DAILY GUIDE TO MIRACLES AND SUCCESSFUL LIVING THROUGH SEED-FAITH (Tulsa: Pinoak Publications, 1975) left off in teaching us how to become God's instruments for manifestations of the miraculous today. The revered Chinese evangelist, Watchman Nee's classic work, THE NORMAL CHRISTIAN LIFE (Tyndale House, 1977) also comes to mind because of the frequent use of the phrase 'normal Christian life' throughout SPTM.

Pastor Johnson tells us why he is writing this his second book: '. . . to address a very abused subject--the mind of the [Christian] believer' (Introduction, p. 27). He further expresses his heart's mission for the spiritual 'reformation' of the Christian churches when he says, 'I have come to see that the normal Christian life means miracles, spiritual intervention, and revelation. It means praise, joy, love, a sense of well-being and purpose--all these traits that elude so many Christians' (chap. 1, p. 31). The number and diversity of miraculous interventions (viz., food multiplications; healings; exorcisms; resurrections; et al) that Johnson relates as an ongoing string of testimony from both his own personal experience and the experiences of his many satellite ministers and ministries are dramatic indeed and truly amazing! Again, the earlier ministries of Kathryn Kuhlman, Smith Wigglesworth, Maria Woodworth Etter, the apostles, Jesus, and the Hebrew prophets all come to mind. But are what the apostle Paul describes as 'varieties of gifts' and 'varieties of ministries' distributed 'individually' but not pervasively (cf. 1 Cor. 12:2-30); to be rightly understood as normative and 'standard operating procedure' for every believer in every assembly? Johnson believes so, and he writes: 'It is unnatural for a Christian to not have an appetite for the impossible' (p. 29), and 'signs, wonders, and miracles are as normal to the gospel as it is normal for you to get up in the morning and breathe. Revival is the Christian life; you can't dissect the two' (p. 156).

Another question seems to be: Is the presence or absence of a Christian's 'mental transformation' or 'mind renewal,' THE deciding factor to either release or restrain the manifestation of God's miraculous power for revival, deliverance, healing, adequate food supplies, and resurrections in the lives of his children and those about to become his children? It would appear that with Jesus being physically absent, and the Holy Spirit being now present within us--WE MUST play the part, but is an 'appetite for the impossible' heaven's first and irrevocable prerequisite for God's manifestation? If we listen to Jesus on the subject, again, it appears to be true because 'EVERYTHING is possible for him who BELIEVES' (Mark 9:23, NIV, caps mine).

Memorable quotes for me are found in the eighth chapter, entitled: "Enduring Uncertainty" with subdivisions titled "Accusing God" and "Being Intellectually Offended." Quote #1: "Getting through the difficulty--without becoming defiant or demanding with God--will take us into the very thing God promised" (p. 128). Quote #2: "Persistently pursue fellowship with God even though your uncertainty feels deep and endless, and no answers have materialized" (p. 129). Quote #3: "Create a gate of praise."

SPTM represents neither a 'false word of faith theology,' nor is the author (a fifth generation Christian pastor) caught in a spirtual aberration as one reviewer charges. Johnson writes with an above average degree of candor, disclosing a number of his own human frailties and the ongoing history of his own difficult struggle to grow spiritually and to keep an 'open heaven' above himself and the Christians who he oversees in Redding, California and beyond. His insights from the Scriptures are numerous and important. The absence of a Scripture index in SPTM is disappointing, however, and diminishes the book's value as a ready reference tool for searching the various biblical passages treated.

For Johnson's detractors (viz., the doubters, and the Christian 'cessationists,' who seem to be forever taking a perverse satisfaction in their confessed unbelief), one wonders with which group they would have been sitting at one of Jesus' 'revival' meetings--or if they would have attended at all for fear of a healing, an exorcism, or (God forbid) a resurrection from taking place. Of them I ask: If God is willing to give you more, why be content with less? Why continue to cheat him; yourself; and others out of a FULL Christian experience? If another servant of God dares to step out of the boat, why not let him walk as far and as long as he is able and cheer him on? Why content yourself with throwing stones from the railing? Jesus has commanded us not to try and stop such persons as they pursue ministry in his behalf (cf. Mark 9:38-40). Try saying: 'I am willing to learn.' 'I am willing to grow.' 'I am willing to be vulnerable to change for the sake of his manifest glory.' 'I will not allow my sins of fear, pride, and unbelief to stand in God's way any longer.' I think we have more than enough room in the church to permit what is so abundant in our heads to begin to trickle down to our hearts; our hands; and our feet--allowing the glory of God to be seen again.

The normal Christian life should be like this...

Reading this book is like reading part 2 of John Wimber's Power Evangelism. Johnson helps us understand, see, and live in the reality of being a Christian, i.e. a supernatural life where the presence of God is and where miracles happen. Johnson wrote, "To say, 'I'm only human,' is to say, 'I'm only satanic.' Humanity without Christ at the center is satanic in nature. When you've been given the Spirit of God, you lose the privilege of claiming, 'I'm only human.' You are much more than that!" (pg. 61).

It is common for human beings to explain the mysteries of God till the Spirit of God no longer is part of that mystery, so Johnson said, "They answer every question and remove the realm of mystery... The chapter I enjoyed the most was Chapter 10 - Dreaming with God. Johnson explains how God wants to work with us, and shows us that "servants aren't co-labourers; friends are" (pg. 142). He used examples in the Bible to show that God takes mans ideas and enjoyed this co-labouring and did as man suggessted. Johnson explains that when the Bible says that Jesus did what He saw His Father do, he believes that Jesus was saying that, "I see what moves the Father, and I allow what moves Him to set My course." (pg 146). Co-labouring opens up the area of creativity, but religion has programmes us to shut down anything that might be a personal desire, so we let the world around us do the dreaming, and we draft into their dream (pg. 148).

If Actual good (holiness) exists, God exists and the Atheist's feet are still planted in mid-air.

Tozer's insights are prophetic and insightful. He is one of the most quoted and respected Christian mystics of the 20th century. Ethics is the universal and morals the particulars. If relativism is imagined as the "absolute" ground of behavior; then it "absolutely" follows that "moral absolutes" are not actually imagined but transcendent - ergo, the God of Moses and Jesus exists. The rational person affirms rational arguments. All moral crooked lines are measured by an objective straight line. If there isn't an objective moral straight line moral objections are meaningless. Idolaters reject actual good for the purpose of rationalizing sin. The proposition "all have sinned" is as inductively (scientifically) verifiable as gravity. The atheists feet are still planted firmly in mid air. .

Despite Some Issues, An Incredibly Edifying Book That Every Christian Should Read

One of the areas that Christians tend to not think enough about is the absolute glory and greatness of Our God. I specifically said Christians with no such adjectives as "today" or "modern" because I think this has been a problem throughout history. In other words, unlike A. W. Tozer, in his book The Knowledge of the Holy, I don't think that the ancients had it so perfect and we only recently flubbed this up.

Despite this and a few other minor quibbles, I was greatly edified by the above-titled book, and do recommend it. In his book, Tozer states from the outset that, since not everyone is able, due to education, time, etc., to read and understand the deeper studies in theology and Scriptural exegesis, he is going to pare down the concepts into a short, and easy to understand, volume.

The format he uses is to begin each chapter by describing an attribute of God. He then uses that chapter to do two things. First off, he deals with explaining said attribute, and second, Tozer ties the concepts and chapters together by making clear that each of these attributes are constantly present in the Godhead. God is perfectly every single one of His attributes for eternity.

Another theme of Tozer's is that not only does God deserve our praise, it is to our own good to praise Him. He doesn't need us or our praise. At least, He doesn't need us or our praise in the sense of the word need we normally understand. He only "needs" us because He chose to do so for our own good, so we could have the joy of serving and praising Him. In reality, He doesn't need us, and His infinite love would be perfectly satisfied without us, if He chose. His love directed towards us (and any need that goes with us) is his choice and His gift to us. If you think of this, you can see the, as CS Lewis puts it in one of his works, "intolerable compliment" of His choosing to love and desire our best.

Yet we repay the God of the Universe Who does this for us in what way? With disdain, a careless disregard, so forth. We do not give him the great glory He calls us to give Him, that He DESERVES, and that would be our greatest joy to give Him. We must remedy this, both to avoid sin and to experience the joy of God and growing in the knowledge of Him and His holiness.

On a few issues Tozer is wrong, in my opinion. I think that he views the past too rosily, in terms of devotion to God. I think that this problem with seeing God in the wondrous, awed way we ought so to do is a long-standing one. That is why, just my opinion here, the Scriptures so frequently speak of the necessity of doing so. I also think that some of his criticisms of every day life are due to the concern over greater technology and the fear of "losing ourselves" to it, just as such concerns exist today. They were much greater back then, and other writers of the time dealt with these concerns. Tozer's personal pet peeves leaked into this topic, methinks.

As well, Tozer seemed to view the idea of understanding God in language as somehow wrong. I can see his point that no words can adequately describe His Majesty, but to use the words is not wrong. God Himself told us to use certain language and terms to describe Him in His Word. He would not have done so had He considered such descriptions so beneath Him as to be a bad or potentially sinful thing.

In a similar vein, Tozer had a strange habit of viewing arguments for God's existence as so beneath Him that they were almost sinful against God. Then he turned around himself and used logic to argue for God's attributes. How does that work?

Lest these few criticisms make one think that I got nothing from the work, or thought it a bad effort, I reiterate my earlier praise for this brief book, and how much it has edified me. While I would disagree with Tozer on a few things, and think that this issue is a perennial problem with Christians instead of a recent one, I agree with his overall thesis. The Church (and thus individual Christians) are in a dark place of not trusting and loving God as we should. We must take God and the things of God more seriously, experience an increased awe of God, and begin to truly worship and praise Him. The only way for the Church to do this is to have the individual Christians that comprise the Church make a conscious choice to do this. Let us take up this necessary, worthy, right, and joyful challenge.

TRUST ME, THIS IS A MUST READ, I've never read a book in one day,but I JUST COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.

A Super Sexy Suspenseful Thriller!

A Super Thriller with a lot of twists and turns. And some pretty HOT sex scenes.
I loved how Zoe and Duncan met at the Hospital where Duncan's father was being treated for a stroke.
Zoe was working at the hospital and giving extra care to Duncan's father.
Duncan decided to move his father back to his home if Zoe would move into the estate and take care of him.

She agreed and her and her son , Kyle moved onto the estate.
Zoe has a lot of secrets that are gradually revealed.
Duncan does also.
There is a Swinger's Club involved (that disappointed me a little) but got used to it as it helped to develop their relationship.
Won't go into the full plot, you can read the synopsis on the Amazon site.
This book has a really good plot . And lots of likeable characters. Some books are spoiled by nothing but sex scenes and no plot BUT this book
has a super plot and hopefully there will be a another to continue Zoe and Duncan's life.

Voyeur by M. K. McDonald is a fast-paced, sexy, thrilling read. Zoey Miller mets Duncan Kincaid in less than desirable circumstances, but that doesn't stop him from hiring her to care for his father. Wanting to learn more about her new boss, Zoe follows Duncan to a sex club. That's where their attraction begins. When she moves into Duncan's estate to begin caring for his father, there attraction intensifies. But the secrets they each keep threaten to destroy their chance at a future.

I really enjoyed this book. This is the type of book that really leaves you wanting more. With some of secrets revealed a little at a time, it leaves you wondering what would happen next. I really did not want to put this book down. It is left with a little cliffhanger, so I really hope there will be another book.

I found it a very erotic story not so much a thriller but more suspense. Since the end is not so much closed I hope there will be a next book. I would love to read more from this author.

You will get to know Zoe who's working as a nurse doing the night shift in a hospital when she meets the rich and handsome Duncan Kincaid. But the meeting begins curiously when Duncan in the room just when the nurse is holding his father’s penis in her hand.

I know what you're thinking right now so hold your horses she was just cleaning his father because the other nurses don't take time to do it.

Duncan quickly discovers that she only cares about her patients and since he found out how this hospital works he gets her fired but not before he hires her to come at his estate to take care of his father.

She accepts his offer but there's one big secret her son and children are not allowed on the estate. But Duncan has also his own secret.

Still Zoe is intrigged by her new employer and follows him to a club to find out that this is a highly private Swinger's club, but who will recognize her with the mask on. She only want's to see what Duncan will do.

Will the both explorer their chemistry to each other or will they both stay Voyeurs??

Love it.

Love it. I like to read before bed and just can't stand having my phone by me to look up words online. I've looked up some crazy obscure words many times, and miraculously this little book has every friekin obscure word in the english language. Makes me proud to be a nerd.

This dictionary is way smaller than expected. Even the words are tiny, I found it quite difficult to read. Also because of the size the book will not hold its own page open. Having the ability to set it down while refrencing a word without losing the page is a big deal. So, I thought, it's fine Ill send it back and exchange it for the right one....We'll turns out I cant. I do not own a printer to print a return lable. I was given no other option. So, now I'm stuck with a dictionary I'll never have a use for. Yet here I am looking for a functional dictionary once again and I'm out money I shouldnt be.

Great Book to Teach From

I teach ESL, so non-native speakers, and this book is not intended for that purpose. It is aimed at teacher-training programs for native speakers who will have to teach English grammar to their students. As a person with an MA in linguistics, I highly recommend this textbook. It explains what "standard English" requires, while also explaining where the rules break down and how people actually use English. I would love to teach a course using this book.

I bought this as a textbook for one of my college classes - obviously - and it's very reliable. It's written well and has clear examples, though some of the practice exercises are a little confusing (and my instructor agrees).

Excellent text for novices!

I'm new to ceramics, and I was seeking a good, easy to read text that would introduce me to the terms used and basic methods employed with this art form. I don't have time to take college courses, so finding good books on the subject was important to me. I found this book to be particularly helpful, because the authors assume the reader has little or no prior knowledge. Many terms that I've heard before but did not understand were carefully explained and the various processes used to make, fire and glaze pottery were introduced in such a way that a beginner can easily understand them. I now feel much more confident about delving into ceramics and I'm looking forward to reading more books on this subject.
