Paradoxes you probably haven't thought of before

Honestly I've never been the biggest fan of the original API Design book from the same author, because I didn't quite like the examples and weird language (grammatically correct, but very strange, abstract). So when I discovered that there is new one, I wasn't quite sure whether I should go for it.

This book is different though and I am glad that I bought it. It's much shorter (I read it during my subway rides to the work in two weeks or so) and chapters are great mixture of comprehensiveness and brevity. Each chapter introduces an interesting paradox of API design and it's described in the way you probably haven't thought of yet. Some of these paradoxes where much more interesting for me (Coolness vs. Cost, Backward Compatibility, Callers and Providers, DSLs ...) than other ones, but I am sure that every developer will appreciate something else. But since it has 20 distinct chapters, you can just skip ones you're not quite interested in.

So compared to the previous one, I feel like this is an improvement. If you happen to be API designer, then it's no-brainer. If you happen to develop standard enterprise software then you probably have greater flexibility to redesign your APIs and you don't have to think so much about things like backwards compatibility etc. But I'd still say that information provided in this book would be useful to you.

I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars, because some of the weirdness from the original API Design book also leaked into this one, but note that this is very subjective opinion.

A great book about API ideas

A great book about API ideas. The author brings cases related to API development, and states clearly the differences between building API and building other kind of software. I recommend this book. The only observation I have is that External References section in each Paradox should have other references than the author's wiki page.

About the Author

After earning a Ph.D. in Islamic history, Mark A. Gabriel became convinced that Muhammad did not speak for God. Honesty sometimes hurts

I took a post graduate level class from Dr. Gabriel this year and I think that I can clear up a few misconceptions on his background and purposes. During the class when answering questions he always quoted the Quran from memory in Arabic. Then he would provide a quick English translation and have us find the verse in one of our translations. From this I can say that he did indeed have the entire Quran memorized, and hence that substantiated many of his biographical details. Also a local Egyptian gentleman visited the class, and they talked about their former homeland, Egypt.
Secondly, he repeatedly expressed his love for all Muslims, and encouraged the class to continue to pray for them. Clearly, anyone who thinks that Dr. Gabriel "hates" Muslims is using that word in a different sense than that with which I am familiar.
The book itself is a fair account of the differences between Jesus and Muhammad. I would suggest that many people need to actually read the Bible to see what it says about Jesus. I suggest that they start with the Gospel of John. Next I suggest that some of the critics of Dr. Gabriel's work should actually read the Quran and see what it teaches on various subjects. Most people in the west will be surprised.
Next, read a biography of Muhammad. Get a feel for the kind of person he was. The earliest biography of the prophet is Islam is by Ibn Ishaq and can be found in translation on the web. Follow that by searching through the collections of hadith on the USC-MSA website. Type in a few search words such as "Jew," or "Jihad." Be inventive in your research. If you enter the search with as few preconceptions as possible you will be amazed at what you can learn. Good luck and may God bless your search.

Born in Egypt, he grew up as a devout Muslim. He memorized the Quran, earned a Ph.D. in Islamic studies at Al Azhar University, and faithfully followed the laws of Islam. Yet the more he learned, the more disillusioned he became. He abandoned Islam at the age of 34.
After a year of searching for God, he opened a Bible for the first time one night. As he read the life of Jesus from the book of Matthew, he mind automatically compared it to the life of Muhammad. When morning came, he chose to follow Jesus. With the same zeal that he used to follow Muhammad, he has followed Jesus for the past 12 years, earning a Ph.D. in Christian education.
His perspectives on Jesus and Muhammad will give you new insight into these men. You will walk through their lives, discovering amazing similarities between their childhoods, their public ministry, and their teachings. At the same time, deep differences become obvious-in their attitudes toward people, their missions, and their views of God.

Scholarly comparison

The author quotes from the Quran and the hadith (which include Muslim practices and philosophy), both of which he knows well having memorized the Quran by age 12. He also knows the Bible well and quotes effectively from it in making his comparisons. Topically arranged, the book is easy to read and understand. Excellent! ! !

Decades ago, when Peurifoy, a researcher and therapist, became interested in studying agoraphobia, not much information was available about the painful, self-imprisoning, psychological affliction. Victims of irrational fears avoid leaving their homes, driving alone, shopping and opening the door to the postman. Their families' finances and wellbeing suffer as well. Now, thanks in part to Peurifoy's immersion in the subject, anxiety related avoidance behavior such as social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder can be managed, if not completely eradicated in some cases. What makes this revised edition of his 1988 guide better than others on the topic is its range and accessibility. Explaining the complicated dynamics of the nervous system, including the brain, Peurifoy presents a practical, thoroughly informative manual in which he persistently encourages the reader to perform the recommended activities for the best results. Disabling panic attacks, the reader learns, arise from the crossed wires of a complex biological system. Panic symptoms experienced during one frightening event become linked with exaggerated thoughts and feelings, which themselves attach to other events. Using Peurifoy's guiding principles, the victim learns to sidestep conditioned behavioral and cognitive responses. Can change your life

I have used this book to supplement the work I'm doing with a good therapist. I learn something important about myself every time I read it, and I feel like I am reading a book that is written about me. It has been so valuable in my work towards treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and depression. For me, this is the most valuable book I have read in my entire life. For the first time, I have hope that I can overcome the debilitating anxiety I have lived with for years. I am learning skills that will help me from relapsing into old ineffective behaviors. I will reference this book for years to come.

Unfinished?

I was really starting to enjoy this book, and then it just stopped. I feel like this was just a short story or novella, a teaser for a full length book. It was barely getting started! I do hope this isn't a trend for chopping books into thirds or fourths then publishing them as full finished works. This book was like a fresh gooey hot fudge sundae that someone takes away from you after a few good bites and says ok, you're done! Very disappointing, but it would have been much better if the author had finished it.

Book 3... 64 pages is not a book

I loved the first 2 Peyton Clark books. This one just left me feeling ripped off. There was a lot of explaining what happened in the previous books, then just a scene or 2 of new material.
I missed these great characters and wanted to revisit them, but from now on I'll wait for a full sized book to buy from this author.

I appreciate her science background and integrity. I understand her passion in her work and I do not have unreasonable expectations of her to speak like the marketing/customer service department. Despite having no science background, Dr Sivak's book is able to make simplify the skincare industry to me, how FDA work, INCI rules, why things are like so, marketing tricks, plant extracts (how using different parts of the same plant can have different effects) etc, products with little or no actives out there, being on the inside, she sees it all and the most rare part is she shares it. I have read bits here there, from not so reliable sources. So glad to read it all in one source from a reliable sources."

great literature

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) published this book in 1874. Most of the book is written as a epistolary novel in the form of letters written by the 'me' (Werther) to his friend Wilhelm. This book is typical for the 'Sturm und Drang'-period, which is a type of German literature written mainly in the period 1767-1785. It is a reaction to the rationalism of the Enlightenment and advocates listening to your heart, feelings take precedence.

In this book the student Werther falls in love with Lotte, who looks after her brothers and sisters after the death of her mother. Lotte is engaged to Albert. Werther becomes friends with Lotte and Albert, even though it hurts him that they are engaged. After a while his pain becomes too much and he leaves town, but later decides to go back. I won't tell what happens then because I don't want to give away the ending, but there is a lot of emotions, feelings, hurt and desperation before this book ends.

This version is the translation by R.D. Boyan and was edited by Nathen Haskell Dole. The printed edition has 117 pages, this is 1585 locations in this Kindle version. This book is in the public domain, so even if Amazon does not offer this book in your area, you can still get it for free from several websites. At the moment of writing Amazon also offers this book for free in German. This book is a major literary work, and I recommend it to everyone who loves reading good literature.

Great Kindle Edition

Kindle edition of Werther is relatively free of typos and formatting issues. One small flaw I noticed is the variability of the font used for the dates of Werther's letters. Some dates are bolded (a majority) so when one is not bolded, the reader may be confused. Nothing too bad for a free text, and an extremely enjoyable piece of literature.

A Distant Classic

This is of course a great classic, which had a profound impact on the culture of its time. Sometimes, I truly appreciate great classics, for themselves as works of art, not just as for artifacts of culture. But sometimes, I can't make the breakthrough and get really involved with a work -- I observe it, rather than experience it. "The Sorrows of Young Werther", for me, was such a book. I am glad I finally read it (I have certainly read enough about it, over the years) but I won't do so again. Perhaps if I read German, or perhaps if I were a third as old as I am ----- .
