Book is okay if you are looking for "I only have eyes for U

I didn't know what was in this book because it was shrink-wrapped at Borders but took a chance b/c it was on sale. It is NOT for beginners. I was looking for a book with fun songs for me to play on the piano w/my 2.5 year old daughter, but this is not what we were looking for! It may be what you want though.
Here's the contents: There are 8 categories of songs: Down Memory Lane (Roaring 20s, World War I, Jazz Age), All-Time Broadway Hit Parade (Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter), Great Music from the Movies (Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart), Swing Years (late 30s and early 40s, Louis Armstrong, Guy Lombardo), Treasury of Operetta & Semi-Classical Hits (Victor Herbert, Sigmund Romberg), Gaslight Varieties, Greensleeves, and Music to Lift the Spirits (anthems, hymns).
The book says each song has been arranged for piano, guitar and organ. It says the arrangements can be easily adapted to any treble-clef C instrument such as accordion, chromatic harmonica, violin, flute, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, recorder, marimba and xylophone.

Great Overview of Condensed Songs

I quit piano lessons in the eighth grade (the familiar story of the indimidating piano teacher) but I kept playing on my own all through high school and this is the book I played over and over. It has a fantastic overview of many American musical genres of the first half of the 20th century, occasionally dipping slightly back to the late 19th.
The arrangements are fairly easy to play for the intermediate piano player yet they sound deceptively impressive. Guitar chords are also present.
The only reason I didn't give it a five-star rating is that, in keeping with the Reader's Digest tradition, this book is condensed; only the choruses of the songs are present. Having grown up with this book, I had no idea that most of these songs had verses not included here. So if you need the entire song, this book won't help you. But if you want a great, playable overview of American songs from the 20th century, then this book is a good choice.

Has a lot of standards, but arrangements are pretty simple

I bought this because I wanted a book that had a lot of the standards. It does. I like to play and sing with my kids (toddlers) and with extended family on different occaisions. I like that it has different holiday songs, ("When Irish Eyes are Smilin'") some patriotic stuff ("America") and plain old songs ("By the light of the Silvery Moon." ) I do wish that the arrangements were a little more difficult...I am not really a great player (one year of lessons in Junior High) but I found myself putting in extra chords and endings. But I am not sophisticated enough to really know what I am doing here, so I have to make it up. Some of the the Gershwin stuff was better, but still cut down. I would call it just beyond beginner. It reminds me of the kind of stuff you hear kids play at piano lessons (year 2). Still, even I am confortable with adding a little here and there, so you can too. OR if you just want to open the page and play a whole new song with few or no mistakes, a novice will like it. Plus it has many songs you would like in an anthology and a nice spiral-like binding--hence the 4 stars above. Overall, a nice book.

A timeless storybook

I was excited to find this Little Golden Book while expecting my first child. It made the perfect gift for my parents who would soon be grandparents for the first time, as it was a favorite bedtime story of mine. This book has great pictures and tells a great story. It gives every child hope that if something bed were to happen there will always be someone there to help fix things. This was my favorite book when I was really little and I still think it is a adorable book. The moral that this book teaches children is a great one. But you will have to read it to find that out.

ONE NIGHT STAND

Ms. Cole I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked the dynamics between Ethan and Nina. What started out as a one night stand for Nina became much much more. Neither Nina or Ethan could stop thinking about each other after that one night and of course something unexpected comes out of it. Ethan handles it like the alpha man he is without hesitation and doubt. Convincing Nina was another story. She eventually came to realize Ethan was a good guy and he truly cared for her. Great HEA.

Simply awesome story! Ethan is the kind of sexy man women dream about. He's steadfast in his feelings for Nina. Nina is a little nerve wrecking at times during the story. The ending is great. I wish it had been longer, but still a great story. Ethan and Nina have strong chemistry for each other.

Nina is a little nervous and has a lot of self doubt but ethan knows what he wants and eventually she comes around and they build a happy family together. I enjoyed reading this a lot . It would have been nice if there was more to it about the jealous wanna be Mrs Ethan but I enjoyed it

About the Author
WILLIAM BEIK is professor of history at Emory University. An authority on the social and institutional history of seventeenth-century France, he is the author of Abolutism and Society: State Power and Provincial Aristocracy in Languedoc (1985), which won the 1986 Herbert Baxter Adams Prize of the American Historical Association, and of Urban Protest in Seventeenth-Century France: the Culture of Retribution (1987). He has written numerous articles and is coeditor of the New Approaches to European History series at Cambridge University Press.

I would recommend this book

The central argument seems to be that - absolutism didn’t exist in practice. Which I didn't consider particularly remarkable argument, as often theory falls short of practice.
It appears that the notional loyalty to King (as an absolute ruler) was already established. The book instead charts the efforts to overcome the practical obstacle to the Kings theoretical authority.
There is a focus on the early reforms of Louis XIV.
With original documents the quality of the evidence is very strong, and has incidental value on other points. Notably among the original document was Louise XIV letter to his son on ruling. For someone seeking an academic understanding of the Ancien Regime, I would recommend this book.

For a casual reading, most original documents are easy to read letters/diary entries about some interesting event the author wishes to provide insight into.

Comprehensive book with interseting documents

This books is not a traditional textbook. The author tells you about a certain situation or topic than provides primary documents from various sources showing different sides to that situation (Reformation in the Provinces, Religion, Managing France, The Aristocracy, etc). It's nice to get the eyewitness accounts of the events instead of just having the author tell you about them.

About the Author

Deanna Sellnow is currently a professor of strategic communication in the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida.  She conducts research in two major areas.  The first focuses on strategic instructional communication in a variety of contexts (e.g., classrooms, risk and crisis, health).  The second focuses on rhetorical studies of popular culture. She has conducted funded research for the USGS, USDA, Department of Homeland Security, and CDC.  Her work is published in refereed national and international journals, as well several books.  She has presented her work across the U.S. and in many countries around the world including, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, England, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Senegal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and Vietnam.  She and her husband, Tim, have a daughter (Debbie), son (Rick), son-in-law (Scott), and grandson (Lincoln).

I love Sellnow! As a Communication major we are often ...

I love Sellnow! As a Communication major we are often given textbooks with a lot of content but not much context. However that's not the case here. I actually found myself unable to set the book down when I started to read since all of the theory chapter examples and articles are popular movie, television, media, and music classics! This textbook is ideal for courses that let you structure your own thoughts and feelings into creative writing since Sellnow jumps from theory to theory making the textbook pretty face-paced in terms of "brief coverage." I would definitely recommend this book to anyone studying in the communication or may even just have an emphasis on psychology or sociology its an incredibly interesting book.

Condition wise: Book was definitely beat up, back cover was bent more than once, but what can you expect from a rental....
Content wise: Its a good overview, gets into a lot of different perspectives and standpoints. Lacks clear flow from chapter to chapter but thats expected from a intro to WGS book. Overall its a text book. okay for class, abysmal for light reading
