"In the end, it's about what you want to be, not what you want to have."

If you agree with that statement (I think my favorite quote from this book), you need to read this book.
If you're looking for inspiration.
If you're afraid of failure.
If you want to start something.
You need to read this book.

"Don't pursue business just for your own gain. Only answer the calls for help."

Derek Sivers, founder of CD Baby shares his success and his failures in this remarkably straight forward and honest book about how he basically accidentally founded a remarkably successful internet company - long before the internet bubble and without knowing anything about it.

I read this book in a couple of quick subway rides, to and from work. Don't be fooled by its ease, though. While you'll zoom through it, you'll close it feeling inspired and ready to start something new and, most importantly, you'll close it feeling less afraid of failure and less self-conscious about doing what makes you happy in life.

One more favorite quote: "... if you think true love looks like Romeo and Juliet, you'll overlook a great relationship that grows slowly." Revolution - in business and in life - often starts with a small step.

This book will help you remember that.

Connecting ...

I used to be a fan of the self-help books, all the way from Norman Vincent Peale to Dale Csrnegie to Anthony Robbins. The point of all of the reading was to just learn about living life at a higher frequency. But I started to move away from these because they made things look so very easy, to the point where I think they are almost irrelevant to the real world.

I was brought to this book through Seth Godin's Blog. It was an excellent read to me because it seemed to be a very honest and realistic discourse. The points of inspiration in this book are not Pollyanna-ish in the least. Sivers made errors, retreated, emerged, retreated again and then emerged again. Ups and downs. No smooth path. And he relates it very clearly.

I have built a successful business over the past 7 years but I have not enjoyed the ride. I am always looking to the end. But now that things are much better, I look back and see that I could have really enjoyed the process much more, and really it is the process that is the juice for me.

Sivers distills this very very well in writing about his experiences. Reading this has shaken me up tonight and brought to the forefront of my mind thoughts that I need to make some serious changes finally that will make me happier and my business more successful.

An honest account

While there is little here that you can't find in many other business books, it sounds like a very honest account of one man's journey. It's a short book that details the decisions (good and bad) and events that happened on the way to creating and eventually selling CDBaby. There's no secret in the book that will help you succeed in a similar way, but there are some important mantras that can be taken away, such as the importance of focusing on the customers above everything else. Due to the length of the book, it's hard to rate this book as you would a 300 - 500 page work. The book is worthwhile, but not great. Think of it as an opportunity to sit down with the author for an hour and having him tell you about the experience... definitely worthwhile.

Most comprehensive work available in the English language on Caliph Omar R.A.

I read this book from cover to cover. It is the most comprehensive work available in the English language on this topic. This is a must read for people who are trying to understand how the Islamic Justice System operated at the time.
Moreover I found out that this author has tried his best to utilize all the authentic resources available in compiling this work. The book, not only gives the biography of Omar RA, but also at the same time serves to give background information regarding certain Quranic verses, which makes it all the more interesting!
I would suggest, the other commentator to give this book another try....read it with an open mind, cover to cover.

I won't waste away...

This play is a beautiful addition to humankind's literature. Annie Baker, a Pulitzer-prize winning playwright, has fashioned a play about isolation, kindness and respect, out of airy nothing. It is a fine work.

Lovely, subtle play

Annie Baker understands that smaller can be bigger. The seemingly slight premise deepens and deepens as the play goes, and by the end, I was thunderstruck. Kudos to Ms. Baker.

The closest thing I can compare it to is Tim Ferris' 4 hour Work Week, but with more heart (and more eloquently written).

The objective of the first chapter Why Embrace the New ISA 84 is to show that with good management support, functional safety can (and should) benefit the bottom line. The rest of the book then covers functional safety management and each safety lifecycle step, providing information and advice on how to put everything together to achieve positive results most effectively. If done properly, applying the new standard should give you a safer and more economical plant operation and this book will have served its purpose.

Useful information but flawed delivery

The book contains useful information, but I had trouble getting past numerous typos, word misuse ("confidant" vs "confident", "pneumonic" vs "mnemonic", etc), poor punctuation and convoluted, run-on sentences. The book is privately published and it shows. Editing involves more than spell-checking!

For a readable, well-organized introduction to safety systems and S84-2004 in the process industries, I recommend "Safety Instrumented Systems: Design, Analysis and Justification" by Gruhn and Cheddie.

It's a Classic

I enjoyed reading it and learned a great deal from it. Although the book was written over 25 years ago, the fundamentals should not change. Peter Lynch did an excellent job of explaining the basics of investing in stock market. I particularly liked the point he makes, that one does not have to a professional or even listen to pros to be successful in the market. According to him, odds may be in your favor, because you may have an edge from your personal experience in a certain field, or simply from your daily life. Professional fund managers, on the other hand, have too many restrictions and limits which make it difficult to maximize the gains. Furthermore, you can identify winners even before a stock gets overpriced because of its recommendations by analysts.
One of the most important things is to have a good understanding of the business of the company that you want to invest in. As he puts it, he would invest in pantyhose rather than communication satellites, or in motel chains than in fiber optics. The simpler the business, better it is, because those companies are perhaps easier to run and follow. According to him, some of the desirable attributes may be that it sounds dull or even better, ridiculous or has something depressing about it. Just to be ridiculous about it. If that is the case, the chances are that many stock analysts may not be following. Other attributes that can be of particular interest are following: it’s a spin-off; institutions don’t own it, and analysts don’t follow it, it has got a niche, people have to keep buying it, insiders are buyers, or the company is buying back shares. I think there is a lot of wisdom right there.
Equally interesting is the chapter on stocks to avoid. He would avoid one that is hottest in the hottest industry or touted as the next big thing or those whispered in your ears. They usually don’t pan out. His examples and illustrations are bit outdated because of the time the book was originally written, but the points are well driven.
Then he goes on say that it is important to classify the company that you have picked in one of the following six general categories: slow growers, stalwarts, fast grower, cyclical, assets play and turnaround. It would not only allow you to set your expectations, but also help you to make decisions along the way by bench marking other companies in the same category. The second step after picking a company is to check the company fundamentals such as, earnings, cash flow and fact-checking the story. He also described in detail how to get most out of company’s annual reports.
This book has a wealth of valuable information that is presented with simplicity and humor. The thing I liked about Peter Lynch is that he highlights his mistake, not his successes. I guess being a stalwart of the industry; he does not need to beat his own drums. I would recommend this book highly. It’s a classic.

Great book from a superinvestor on Wall Street, but not so practical as one might think at first sight

Peter Lynch has managed to achieve enormous results with his stock picking method. His investment results are sometimes mentioned in books on the efficient market hypothesis as a form of proof markets cannot be random. Quite a compliment.
Peter Lych seems like a nice guy. He doesn't consider himself to be some kind of genious nor did his trading results changed his ego too much in my opinion.

His stock picking method is fairly simple. He likes simply walking around malls and stores to pick up investment ideas. Afterward he'll check they're fundamentals (the level of debt, sales & earnings growth, net cash position, PEG ratio, industry components, ...) with special attention to the available space to keep on growing. He then goes for 10-baggers, stocks you can sell at a price 10x the price you've paid for them. Lynch doesn't mind owning dozens or hundreds of stocks if he thinks they'll grow. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac apparently were two cash cows for Lynch (luckily he didn't own them the past years).

Although Lynch is very open about his investment selection process and what he looks at when studying balance sheets, I'm a bit disappointed I couldn't get any practical value out of this book. The most usefull I got out of this were his investment selection criteria to create a stock screen to select stocks with fundamental characteristics Lynch would consider important. But there it also stops.
Another thing Lynch doesn't mention is his position sizing strategy or his exits from the stocks he owns. This would certainly have been helpful for traders/investors like me.

The book uses very old examples (it was written before 2000 and most of the examples are from the 1980s and 1990s, that's why four stars not five) but the underlying ideas are still valid and the book presents them very well. Worth reading if you are interested in investing in stocks.

Impressively solid YA

You can compare Falcon Quinn to Harry Potter, and you will. But it's not a knockoff. Boylan's off-kilter writing style and her eye for amusing and engaging characters brought me into the story from the very first line. The pacing of the story was a little jumpy early on, but the book quickly settles into a smooth flow and the pages sail by.

Falcon as a character is not unusual, which is the point. He feels like the decent-hearted struggling kid you probably knew in school, or possibly WERE in school. What's enjoyable about him is that right from the outset, he's TRYING to do right. His mistakes are as interesting as his successes, and he reaches only normal teenage levels of emo rather than bipolar bogglement. His friends Max, Megan, Pearl, Johnny and the rest are great fun in their own right. The dialog is the kind I can hardly resist reading out loud, both because it's well-written and funny, but also because I can hear each character's voice so clearly in my own head.

The plot is entertaining as well. It rolls along, rarely in a straight line, but always going somewhere new and...well, FUN! Though you can probably deduce where the story will wind up, this is a book about the trip and not the finish line. And the trip is worth taking.

Finally, the theme. I liked that it's more questions than answers. While it's clear Boylan has ideas about what the answers are, she does less pushing than some inferior YA authors do. What makes someone a monster? What is acceptance worth? Ultimately, how much do I have to make way for the world and how much must the world make way for me? A bad author tells. A good one asks.

The story does cover the age-old YA theme of finding out what makes you special and worthy, but to say that's a Harry Potter trope does disservice to the MANY books on this theme that have come before and after. Narnia, anyone?

Similarly, the setting ("special" children learning to manage their powers) is also very well-traveled ground. Diana Wynne-Jones, Tamora Pierce, Andre Norton and many others have written on it, and that's just off the top of my head and not mentioning the X-Men. Certain ideas are WORTH revisiting.

Falcon Quinn and the Black Mirror is a quick, enjoyable read with memorable characters and dialog. I'm not typically a series-reader, but I'm very much hoping for a sequel.

I think this is the best book ever, I have read it 3 times and I wish she was a more well known author, I think this book is not getting the attecine that it deserves. I can not wait for book 2!!!

Of A Genre

Jennifer Finney Boylan began by appearing to have borrowed from the Hobbit-Harry Potter-Maximum Ride genre, in that it involves a society that exists only in imagination. In fact, it begins very much like Harry Potter, with children who are somehow "different" being transported by a magic bus to a school for such unusual people and going through a similar sorting process to discover the exact nature of their "difference."

Then it goes in another direction. Each main character, along with their schoolmates, begin to morph, physically, into the type of "monster" they have been diagnosed to be, and now they must discover how to fit into the world as entirely different creatures from those they have known, and into a society that routinely rejects anyone who doesn't conform to arbitrary norms.

I have begun reading many books and then putting them down after a few chapters, never to cross my eyes again. Others languish on my end table, being read whenever I had nothing else to do. Not so with Falcon Quinn and The Dark Mirror. I began reading on Friday evening, and by Saturday afternoon I had finished all 486 pages. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
